The transition from inland- to streaming-style ice flow near to and upstream from the onset to Ice Stream D, West Antarctica, is investigated using the force- balance technique. Basal drag provides the majority of the flow resistance over the study area but is substantially modified by non-local stress gradients. Lateral drag increases with distance downstream, balancing ~50-100% of the driving stress at the onset. Longitudinal stress gradients (LSG) are also found to be significant, an observation that distinguishes ice flow in this region from the inland- and streaming-flow regimes that bound it, in which LSG are usually negligible. My Library is a personalization tool that allows the library user to consolidate frequently used library resources and services. Since 1998, My Library has been available as a web page to users of the Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries. An evaluation of My Library use at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) was completed and published in 2000. This article reports on a follow up study that took place between March 2000 and December 2001. The article also discusses the value of My Library as a teaching tool at VCU.

Adaptive information filtering is concerned with filtering information streams in dynamic (changing) environments. The changes may occur both on the transmission side — the nature of the streams can change — and on the reception side — the interests of the user (or group of users) can change. While information filtering and information retrieval have a lot in common, this dissertation’s primary concern is with the differences. The temporal nature of information filtering necessitates more flexible document representation methods than does information retrieval where all the occurring terms are known in advance. In Prüfer domains of finite character, ideals are represented as finite intersections of special ideals which are proper generalizations of the classical primary ideals. We show that representations of ideals as shortest intersections of primal or quasi-primary ideals exist and are unique. Moreover, every non-zero ideal is the product of uniquely determined pairwise comaximal quasi-primary ideals. Semigroups of primal and quasi-primary ideals with fixed associated primes are also investigated in arbitrary Prüfer domains. Their structures can be described in terms of the value groups of localizations.

Neutrinos from far away sources annihilating at the Z resonance on relic neutrinos may give origin to the ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. Here we present predictions of this mechanism with relic neutrinos lighter than 1 eV, which do not gravitationally cluster. We show that not only the super GZK events, but the "ankle" and all events above it can be accounted for. Most primaries above the ankle are predicted to be nucleons up to $10^{20.0}$ eV and photons at higher energies. We also find an accumulation at the GZK cutoff energy, a hint of which can be seen in the data.

The molecular weights of two series of PEEK polymers were determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The first series contains oxyalkylene linkages. The other series contains oxyethylene linkages. The synthesis of several thermally stable monomers has been investigated. These monomers include 9,9-dihexylfluorene-2,7-dicarboxaldehyde, 2,7-bis(bromomethyl)-9,9- dibutylfluorene and 2,7-bis(hydroxymethyl)-9,9-diethylfluorene. These monomers can be used to form polymers that will contain short conjugated segments separated by nonconjugated segments. The synthesis of 50 g of each of the following monomers was accomplished: bis(3-methylphenyl) phenylphosphine oxide, bis(4-methylphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide, bis(3- carboxyphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide and bis(4-carboxyphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide. Multiphoton-absorption processes have recently attracted growing interest because of the potential impact on a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from data storage to photodynamic therapy. From the materials standpoint, particular interest is centered in designing chromophores that exhibit a large two-photon cross-section. The current research is focused on establishing synthetic routes that lead to the formation of derivatives of N,N-diphenyl-(7-benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-ylamine which contain meta functionalization. A bromoethoxy functionalized chromophore, N-phenyl-N-(3-(2-bromoethoxy)phenyl)-7-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren- 2-ylamine , was synthesized and used as a polymer pendent while a vinylbenzyloxy chromophore, N-phenyl-N-(3-(4-vinylbenzyloxy)phenyl)-7- (benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-ylamine, was synthesized as a hydrosilation substrate. On December 18, 1999, the Terra satellite was launched with a complement of five instruments including the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Many geophysical products are derived from MODIS data including global snow-cover products. MODIS snow and ice products have been available through the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) since September 13, 2000. MODIS snow-cover products represent potential improvement to or enhancement of the currently available operational products mainly because the MODIS products are global and 500-m resolution, and have the capability to separate most snow and clouds. With the launch of NASA’s Terra satellite and the MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), operational Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) and albedo products are now being made available to the scientific community. The MODIS BRDF/Albedo algorithm makes use of a semiempirical kernel-driven bidirectional reflectance model and multidate, multispectral data to provide global 1-km gridded and tiled products of the land surface every 16 days. These products include directional hemispherical albedo (black-sky albedo), bihemispherical albedo (white-sky albedo), Nadir BRDF-Adjusted surface Reflectances (NBAR), model parameters describing the BRDF, and extensive quality assurance information. The ages of the western and eastern basins of the Black Sea have been estimated on the basis of heat-flow data. The obtained ages (70-60 Ma) are in good accord with the time of basins' origin as determined from seismic and magnetic data. During this time, the Black Sea opened as a back-arc basin to the north of the Pontide magmatic arc. The arc prehistory of the Pontides is confirmed by the existence of relict mantle seismicity, which is most active in the eastern Pontides. The fore-Ural is a classical region of intrastratal gypsum karst. The intensive development of karst in the Permian gypsums and anhydrites causes numerous practical problems, the subsidence hazard being the most severe. Mechanisms of karst breakdown formation were studied in detail in the Kunguskaya Cave area. The cave and its setting are characteristic to the region and, being a site of detalied stationary studies for many years, the cave represents a convenient location for various karst and speleological investigations.
