Knowledge Discovery From Texts: A Concept Frame Graph Approach, Kanagasabai Rajaraman, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address the text content mining problem through a concept based framework by constructing a conceptual knowledge base and discovering knowledge therefrom. Defining a novel representation called the Concept Frame Graph (CFG), we propose a learning algorithm for constructing a CFG knowledge base from text documents. An interactive concept map visualization technique is presented for user-guided knowledge discovery from the knowledge base. Through experimental studies on real life documents, we observe that the proposed approach is promising for mining deeper knowledge.

Federal Consistency In New Jersey, Urban Harbors Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Urban Harbors Institute Publications

A discussion paper prepared as part of a focus group on the topic of Federal Consistency in New Jersey.

In 1972, the U. S. Congress passed the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA), designed to “preserve, protect, develop, and where possible, to restore and enhance the resources of the nation's coastal zone.” The CZMA encouraged coastal states to develop and implement comprehensive management programs that balance the need for coastal resource protection with the need for economic growth and development within the coastal zone.

In the latter portion of the 1970s New Jersey developed a coastal management plan that was fully …

Removal Versus Ablation In Krf Dry Laser Cleaning Of Polystyrene Particles From Silicon, Sergey I. Kudryashov, Susan D. Allen Nov 2002

Removal Versus Ablation In Krf Dry Laser Cleaning Of Polystyrene Particles From Silicon, Sergey I. Kudryashov, Susan D. Allen

Mechanical Engineering - Daytona Beach

Direct absorption and melting of 0.2, 0.5 and 1.1 μm polystyrene particles on a Si substrate irradiated by 248 nm excimer laser radiation was found to contribute to their dry laser removal via a "hopping" mechanism at cleaning thresholds of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.16 J/cm 2, respectively. Ablation of these particles, which starts near the beginning of substrate deceleration at fluences above 0.4-0.5 J/cm 2, suppresses particle removal due to ablative recoil momentum. At fluences above a second cleaning threshold of 0.7 J/cm 2 particles are completely evaporated without any visible surface damage of the Si substrate.

Curie Temperature Of Fept:B2O3 Nanocomposite Films, H. Zeng, Renat F. Sabirianov, O. Mryasov, M.L. Yan, K. Cho, David J. Sellmyer Nov 2002

Curie Temperature Of Fept:B2O3 Nanocomposite Films, H. Zeng, Renat F. Sabirianov, O. Mryasov, M.L. Yan, K. Cho, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

We report results on experimental and theoretical studies of structural and magnetic properties of FePt: B2O3 nanocomposite films. It was found for films prepared by magnetron sputtering with subsequent annealing that lattice parameters a and c of fct FePt change with significantly different rates with increase of the B2O3 fraction. As a consequence, fundamental magnetic properties change markedly, with the Curie temperature decreasing by 36% for 25% FePt volume fraction compared with the bulk value. Using an ab initio parametrization of magnetic interactions, we propose statistical model of thermal fluctuations in fct FePt, which …

Effect Of An Electric Field On The Surface Tension Of A Dipolar-Quadrupolar Fluid And Its Implication For Sign Preference In Droplet Nucleation, V.B. Warshavsky, Xiao Cheng Zeng Nov 2002

Effect Of An Electric Field On The Surface Tension Of A Dipolar-Quadrupolar Fluid And Its Implication For Sign Preference In Droplet Nucleation, V.B. Warshavsky, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

The effect of a uniform electric field on interfacial properties of dipolar-quadrupolar fluids is investigated by using the density-functional theory. As in the case of purely dipolar fluids the (thermodynamic) surface tension is always altered by the external field, regardless of the direction of the field. However, unlike the purely dipolar fluids, for two given external fields with the same strength but exactly opposite direction the magnitude of variation in the surface tension is different. This apparent symmetry breaking by reversing the field direction suggests a new molecular mechanism to explain the phenomenon of sign preference in droplet formation on …

A Visual Tool For Building Logical Data Models Of Websites, Zehua Liu, Wee-Keong Ng, Feifei Li, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information sources over the WWW contain a large amount of data organized according to different interests and values. Thus, it is important that facilities are there to enable users to extract information of interest in a simple and effective manner. To do this, We propose the Wiccap Data Model, an XML data model that maps Web information sources into commonly perceived logical models, so that information can be extracted automatically according to users' interests. To accelerate the creation of data models, we have implemented a visual tool, called the Mapping Wizard, to facilitate and automate the process of producing Wiccap …

Web Classification Using Support Vector Machine, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim Nov 2002

Web Classification Using Support Vector Machine, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In web classification, web pages from one or more web sites are assigned to pre-defined categories according to their content. Since web pages are more than just plain text documents, web classification methods have to consider using other context features of web pages, such as hyperlinks and HTML tags. In this paper, we propose the use of Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers to classify web pages using both their text and context feature sets. We have experimented our web classification method on the WebKB data set. Compared with earlier Foil-Pilfs method on the same data set, our method has been …

Defending Against Redirect Attacks In Mobile Ip, Robert H. Deng, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao Nov 2002

Defending Against Redirect Attacks In Mobile Ip, Robert H. Deng, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The route optimization operation in Mobile IP Version 6 (MIPv6) allows direct routing from any correspondent node to any mobile node and thus eliminates the problem of "triangle routing" present in the base Mobile IP Version 4 (MIPv4) protocol. Route optimization, however, requires that a mobile node constantly inform its correspondent nodes about its new care-of addresses by sending them binding update messages. Unauthenticated or malicious binding updates open the door for intruders to perform redirect attacks, i.e., malicious acts which redirect traffic from correspondent nodes to locations chosen by intruders. How to protect binding update messages to defend against …

Mining Of Correlated Rules In Genome Sequences, L. Lin, L. Wong, Tze-Yun Leong, P. S. Lai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the huge amount of data collected by scientists in the molecular genetics community in recent years, there exists a need to develop some novel algorithms based on existing data mining techniques to discover useful information from genome databases. We propose an algorithm that integrates the statistical method, association rule mining, and classification rule mining in the discovery of allelic combinations of genes that are peculiar to certain phenotypes of diseased patients.

Horizontal-Branch Morphology And The Photometric Evolution Of Old Stellar Populations, Hyun Chul Lee, Young Wook Lee, Brad K. Gibson Nov 2002

Horizontal-Branch Morphology And The Photometric Evolution Of Old Stellar Populations, Hyun Chul Lee, Young Wook Lee, Brad K. Gibson

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Theoretical integrated broadband colors ranging from far-UV to near-IR have been computed for old stellar systems from our evolutionary population synthesis code. These models take into account, for the first time, the detailed systematic variation of horizontal-branch (HB) morphology with age and metallicity. Our models show that some temperature-sensitive color indices are significantly affected by the presence of blue HB stars. In particular, B-V does not become monotonically redder as metallicity increases at given ages, but becomes bluer by as much as ∼0.15 mag because of the contribution from blue HB stars. Similar trends are also found in the Washington …

Locally Efficient Estimation With Bivariate Right Censored Data , Christopher M. Quale, Mark J. Van Der Laan, James M. Robins Oct 2002

Locally Efficient Estimation With Bivariate Right Censored Data , Christopher M. Quale, Mark J. Van Der Laan, James M. Robins

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Estimation for bivariate right censored data is a problem that has had much study over the past 15 years. In this paper we propose a new class of estimators for the bivariate survivor function based on locally efficient estimation. The locally efficient estimator takes bivariate estimators Fn and Gn of the distributions of the time variables T1,T2 and the censoring variables C1,C2, respectively, and maps them to the resulting estimator. If Fn and Gn are consistent estimators of F and G, respectively, then the resulting estimator will be nonparametrically efficient (thus the term ``locally efficient''). However, if either Fn or …

Environmental Regulation In The Presence Of Environmentally Conscious Consumers., Sangeeta Bansal Dr. Oct 2002

Environmental Regulation In The Presence Of Environmentally Conscious Consumers., Sangeeta Bansal Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The Problem and Literature Review There is a growing concern for the environmental degradation caused by various economic activities. Clean environment, once regarded as a free good, has now become a scarce resource due to cumulative accumulation of pollution over the years. Being a public good, it may not be possible to assign clear property rights to environment. Hence, even though it has become a scarce resource, economic agents continue to regard it as a free good and tend to ignore the harmful effects of their activities on the environment. This causes a distortion between the market and socially optimal …

Effects Of Light Scalar Mesons In Η\To 3Π Decay, Joseph Schechter, Abdou Abdel-Rehim, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz Oct 2002

Effects Of Light Scalar Mesons In Η\To 3Π Decay, Joseph Schechter, Abdou Abdel-Rehim, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz

Physics - All Scholarship

We study the role of a possible nonet of light scalar mesons in the still interesting \eta \to 3\pi decay process, with the primary motivation of learning more about the scalars themselves. The framework is a conventional non-linear chiral Lagrangian of pseudoscalars and vectors, extended to include the scalars. The parameters involving the scalars were previously obtained to fit the s-wave \pi\pi and \piK scatterings in the region up to about 1 GeV as well as the strong decay \eta' \to \eta \pi\pi. At first, one might expect a large enhancement from diagrams including a light \sigma(560). However there is …

Femtosecond Pump-Probe Reflectivity Study Of Silicon Carrier Dynamics, A. J. Sabbah, D. Mark Riffe Oct 2002

Femtosecond Pump-Probe Reflectivity Study Of Silicon Carrier Dynamics, A. J. Sabbah, D. Mark Riffe

All Physics Faculty Publications

We have studied the ultrafast optical response of native-oxide terminated Si(001) with pump-probe reflectivity using 800 nm, 28 fs pulses at an excitation density of (5.5±0.3)×1018cm-3. Time-dependent reflectivity changes comprise third-order-response coherent-transient variations arising from anisotropic state filling and linear-response variations arising from excited free carriers, state filling, and lattice heating. A time constant of 32±5fs associated with momentum relaxation is extracted from the coherent-transient variations. The state-filling and free-carrier responses are sensitive to carrier temperature, allowing an electron-phonon energy relaxation time of 260±30fs to be measured. The recovery of the reflectivity signal back towards its …

Distributions Of Nobel Metal Pd And Pt In Mesoporous Silica, J. Arbiol, A. Cabot, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu Oct 2002

Distributions Of Nobel Metal Pd And Pt In Mesoporous Silica, J. Arbiol, A. Cabot, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu

Faculty Publications

Mesoporous silicananostructures have been synthesized and loaded with Pd and Pt catalytic noble metals. It is found that Pd forms small nanoclusters (3–5 nm) on the surface of the mesoporous structure whereas Pt impregnation results in the inclusion of Pt nanostructures within the silica hexagonal pores (from nanoclusters to nanowires). It is observed that these materials have high catalyticproperties for CO–CH4CO–CH4CO–CH4 combustion, even in a thick film form. In particular, results indicate that the Pt and Pd dispersed in mesoporous silica are catalytically active as a selective filter for gas sensors.

Horizon Occlusion Culling For Real-Time Rendering Of Hierarchical Terrains, Parris K. Egbert, Brandon Lloyd Oct 2002

Horizon Occlusion Culling For Real-Time Rendering Of Hierarchical Terrains, Parris K. Egbert, Brandon Lloyd

Faculty Publications

We present a technique to perform occlusion culling for hierarchical terrains at run-time. The algorithm is simple to implement and requires minimal pre-processing and additional storage, yet leads to 2-4 times improvement in framerate for views with high degrees of occlusion. Our method is based on the well-known occlusion horizon algorithm. We show how to adapt the algorithm for use with hierarchical terrains. The occlusion horizon is constructed as the terrain is traversed in an approximate front to back ordering. Regions of the terrain are compared to the horizon to determine when they are completely occluded from the viewpoint. Culling …

In November 1999 a new near-IR airglow imaging system was deployed at the Starfire Optical Range outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This system allowed wide angle images of the airglow to be collected, with high signal to noise, every 3 seconds with a one second integration time. At approximately 1000 UT on November 17, 1999, a fast wavelike disturbance was seen propagating through the OH Meinel airglow layer. This wave had an observed period of ≈215 seconds, an observed phase velocity of ≈160 m/s and a horizontal wavelength of ≈35 km. This phase velocity is among the fastest yet reported …

A Progression Of Avian Radar Studies At Airfields, Edward J. Zakrajsek, Carolyn Matkovich, Andreas Smith

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

We used our Mobile Avian Radar Systems on two different projects this past year. A study at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, used the old configuration, with a vertical-scanning radar and our image-processing technique. A study at Vancouver International Airport, B.C. used the new configuration with both vertical and surveillance radars and our new radar data processing technique. The Robins study was a preliminary assessment of seasonal bird-hazards, especially regarding the altitude distribution of birds near the airfield. Data was collected. The Vancouver study was a preliminary survey and system evaluation for the development of a real- time, dedicated Airport …

Progress Report On Development Of A Terminal Area Bird Detection And Monitoring System Using The Asr-9, Seth Troxel, Beth Echels, Will Pughe, Mark Weber

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

Lincoln Laboratory has been tasked by the FAA to investigate utilization of existing terminal area surveillance radars as the basis for a real-time, automated bird hazard advisory system for the immediate airport vicinity. With its on-airport siting and rapid scan rate, the ASR-9 is a logical choice as the primary sensor for the Terminal Avian Hazard Advisory System (TAHAS). Using multi-dimensional image processing and fuzzy logic techniques, a bird-flock detection module that operates on ASR-9 data has been developed and was described at last year's conference. Refinements to the flock detection module are ongoing. Recent efforts have focused on detection …

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

Since the 2001 BSC meeting in Calgary, Geo-Marine, Inc. has made dramatic advances in the development of avian radar systems. The Mobile Avian Radar System (MARS) has undergone major revisions. New radar processor cards provide the computer workstations with higher resolution data than was previously possible. The system now incorporates both horizontal- and vertical-scanning radars. The vertical scanning radar antenna now includes a shield to reduce side-lobe interference. Significant improvements have been made in ground clutter and weather reduction algorithms. The system has been tested for use in real-time monitoring of bird hazards on airports. GMI is currently working with …

Strides In Bird Hazard Control At Entebbe International Airport, Gloria Korabo Bitebekezi Oct 2002

Strides In Bird Hazard Control At Entebbe International Airport, Gloria Korabo Bitebekezi

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

The location of Entebbe International Airport within the Entebbe peninsula bird sanctuary would make it one of the most bird-strike prone airports in the world. However the airport actually has a relatively clean strike record. Since 1998, the number of bird strike incidents that caused damage to aircraft has been on the decline. This paper illustrates the methods used at Entebbe International Airport and their effectiveness in controlling different species of birds.

Evaluation And Mitigation Of Bird Hazards In Ex-Vaso De Texcoco: The Proposed Site Of A New International Airport For Mexico City, Edward C. Cleary Oct 2002

Evaluation And Mitigation Of Bird Hazards In Ex-Vaso De Texcoco: The Proposed Site Of A New International Airport For Mexico City, Edward C. Cleary

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

If Mexico is to meet increasing demands for air travel, a new international airport for Mexico City must be constructed. At the request of the Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT), we evaluated Ex-Vaso de Texcoco (EVT), one of several sites considered for construction of the new airport, to determine if birds would pose an unacceptable risk to aircraft. Aerial (by helicopter) and ground surveys were conducted on 6 occasions during fall and winter from 1996-2002 to census birds and evaluate aquatic habitats at EVT and other locations in the Valley of Mexico. Total populations estimates for waterfowl and shorebirds …

The Evolution Of Transport Canada’S Wildlife Management And Planning Program, Bruce Mackinnon, Kristi Russell Oct 2002

The Evolution Of Transport Canada’S Wildlife Management And Planning Program, Bruce Mackinnon, Kristi Russell

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

As a follow-up to a paper presented at International Bird Strike Committee meeting #23 in 1996, discussing Transport Canada’s emphasis on education and awareness programs as a means to reduce bird hazards to aircraft, this paper will describe significant changes that have occurred in Canada since that time. The 1994 Government of Canada National Airports Policy led to the devolution of Canada’s major airports. Private sector airport authorities now operate these airports and Transport Canada’s focus has shifted from management by policy to one of regulatory oversight. In addition to building on the awareness program that was in place in …

Aspects Of The Feeding Ecology Of Avifauna At An Inland Airport, South Africa, Ordino Kok, Lettie Kok Oct 2002

Aspects Of The Feeding Ecology Of Avifauna At An Inland Airport, South Africa, Ordino Kok, Lettie Kok

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

Bloemfontein airport, situated in the central Free State, experiences the greatest number of bird-aircraft collisions at South African airports, relative to its (low) air traffic. In an attempt to rectify the situation, aspects of the feeding ecology of birds presenting a potential hazard at the airport were investigated. Plant surveys indicated that the study area can be classified as a dry Cymbopogon – Themeda veld type in a relatively good condition. Using 270 pitfall traps over a continuous period of 15 months, it was established that more than twice as many ground-living invertebrates, mainly insects, occurred in grass kept permanently …

Potential Of Grass-Endophytes As A Bird Deterrent: Concept Testing With Canada Geese, Chris G. L. Pennell, Phil Rolston Oct 2002

Potential Of Grass-Endophytes As A Bird Deterrent: Concept Testing With Canada Geese, Chris G. L. Pennell, Phil Rolston

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

Problems caused by birds in the agricultural, horticultural, recreational and the aviation industries are escalating world wide as man develops environments that are attractive to birds. Chemical repellents, bird scarers, and exclusion netting are being used to keep birds away by taste, fright and containment. Habitat management using grasses with selected endophytes may be a new tool for minimizing bird nuisance problems in these industries. Canada geese (Branta Canadensis) were offered selected ryegrass/endophyte Neotyphodium lolli seed and herbage to examine the effects of known endophyte alkaloids on their feeding behavior in 2000-2001. Forty geese were captured annually, contained …

Management Of Rodent Populations At Airports, Gary W. Witmer, Jessica Dewey Oct 2002

Management Of Rodent Populations At Airports, Gary W. Witmer, Jessica Dewey

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

Birds pose serious hazards at U.S. airports. Raptors are hazardous to aircraft safety due to their size, hunting behavior, and hovering/soaring habits. Abundant food sources, open space, and availability of perches at or near airports contribute to ideal hunting opportunities for many raptors. The ability to directly manage raptor populations is limited by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Reduction of small mammal populations at an airport may decrease raptor populations in the area and therefore, reduce the risk that raptors pose to aircraft. Rodents can be managed by population management or by habitat management. Reduction of small rodent populations can …

Conducting An Economical Wildlife Hazard Assessment Using A Wildlife Incursion Log (Poster), Elizabeth Rogers, David Tiller Oct 2002

Conducting An Economical Wildlife Hazard Assessment Using A Wildlife Incursion Log (Poster), Elizabeth Rogers, David Tiller

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

Small and moderate-sized airports face increasing financial constraints. A need for a wildlife hazard assessment can represent a real financial hardship. We describe how a wildlife incursion log maintained by airport personnel can provide an economical means of assessing wildlife hazards in a rural landscape. Using such a log with records for 208 days, we created a relational database that could be analyzed with simple summary statistics. Using the incursion log, we examined seasonal shifts in average daily incursions (such as increased sandhill cranes in the spring), persistent year- round presence of some species (such as American crow), and the …

Compliance With Wildlife Hazard Regulations: An Air Carrier’S Perspective, Vern Berry Oct 2002

Compliance With Wildlife Hazard Regulations: An Air Carrier’S Perspective, Vern Berry

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)

As a safety professional at Evergreen International Airlines, I have first-hand experience of the damage caused by wildlife. Seven major bird strikes have cost Evergreen approximately $20 million in damages and lost revenue over a 5-year period. These events often occurred during critical phases of flight. For example, one Evergreen B-747 suffered severe damage to engine and pylon structure with subsequent loss of control during climb. You cannot train for every possible aircraft failure induced by bird strikes. The time will come, with or without the collection of additional bird-strike statistics, when damage from a bird strike will exceed the …
