Photometric Variability In A Sample Of 187 G And K Giants, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel, Stephen M. Henry, Douglas S. Hall

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have used three automatic photoelectric telescopes to obtain photometric observations of 187 G, K, and (a few) M0 field giants. We find low-amplitude photometric variability on timescales of days to weeks on both sides of the coronal dividing line (CDL) in a total of 81 or 43% of the 187 giants. About one-third of the variables have amplitudes greater than 0.01 mag in V. In our sample the percentage of variable giants is a minimum for late-G spectral classes and increases for earlier and later classes; all K5 and M0 giants are variable. We also obtained high-resolution, red wavelength …

Evolution Of Secondary Electron Emission Characteristics Of Spacecraft Surfaces: Importance To Spacecraft Charging, Robert Davies, John R. Dennison Sep 2000

Evolution Of Secondary Electron Emission Characteristics Of Spacecraft Surfaces: Importance To Spacecraft Charging, Robert Davies, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

A sample of oxidized aluminum was placed inside an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber alongside a piece of PTFE (Teflon®) coated wire and continuously bombarded with 1-3 keV electrons for ~30 hours. The SE yield of the surface was monitored as a function of time throughout the electron bombardment. Oxidized aluminum was chosen as a typical material comprising spacecraft surfaces, while outgassing of the Teflon wire contaminated the UHV environment, simulating the microenvironment surrounding an operating spacecraft. Continuous electron bombardment resulted in two effects—( i) the removal of the oxide layer, and (ii) the deposition of a thin (~1 nm-thick) layer …

Spatial And Temporal Changes In Land Use And Land Cover From 1988 To 1992 In The Upper White River Watershed, H. D. Scott, J. M. Mckimmey Sep 2000

Spatial And Temporal Changes In Land Use And Land Cover From 1988 To 1992 In The Upper White River Watershed, H. D. Scott, J. M. Mckimmey

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Changes in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) in the upper White River Watershed from 1988 to 1992 were analyzed and plotted using the geographic information system known as Geographic Resources Analyses Support System (GRASS). This portion of the White River Watershed includes two sub-basins the East Fork and the Middle Fork. In addition, LULC changes were determined for two smaller sub-basins, Shumate Creek and Cannon Creek, located in the East Fork of the White River. The sources and methods of interpretation of the 1988 and 1992 of data were different. Thus, there were variations in how certain portions of …

Exception Handling In Workflow Systems, Zongwei Luo, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut, John A. Miller Sep 2000

Exception Handling In Workflow Systems, Zongwei Luo, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut, John A. Miller

Kno.e.sis Publications

In this paper, defeasible workflow is proposed as a framework to support exception handling for workflow management. By using the “justified” ECA rules to capture more contexts in workflow modeling, defeasible workflow uses context dependent reasoning to enhance the exception handling capability of workflow management systems. In particular, this limits possible alternative exception handler candidates in dealing with exceptional situations. Furthermore, a case-based reasoning (CBR) mechanism with integrated human involvement is used to improve the exception handling capabilities. This involves collecting cases to capture experiences in handling exceptions, retrieving similar prior exception handling cases, and reusing the exception handling experiences …

Singularly Perturbed Control Systems Using Non-Commutative Computer Algebra, J. W. Helton, F. Dell Kronewitter, W. M. Mceneaney, Mark Stankus Sep 2000

Singularly Perturbed Control Systems Using Non-Commutative Computer Algebra, J. W. Helton, F. Dell Kronewitter, W. M. Mceneaney, Mark Stankus

Mathematics

Most algebraic calculations which one sees in linear systems theory, for example in IEEE TAC, involve block matrices and so are highly non-commutative. Thus conventional commutative computer algebra packages, as in Mathematica and Maple, do not address them. Here we investigate the usefulness of non-commutative computer algebra in a particular area of control theory − singularly perturbed dynamic systems − where working with the non-commutative polynomials involved is especially tedious. Our conclusion is that they have considerable potential for helping practitioners with such computations. Commutative Gröbner basis algorithms are powerful and make up the engines in symbolic algebra packages' …

Using A Mensuration Approach With Fia Vegetation Plot Data To Assess The Accuracy Of Tree Size And Crown Closure Classes In A Vegetation Map Of Northeastern California, Samantha J. Gill, Jeff Milliken, Debby Beardsley, Ralph Warbington Sep 2000

Using A Mensuration Approach With Fia Vegetation Plot Data To Assess The Accuracy Of Tree Size And Crown Closure Classes In A Vegetation Map Of Northeastern California, Samantha J. Gill, Jeff Milliken, Debby Beardsley, Ralph Warbington

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

The accuracy of the Lassen-Modoc vegetation map was assessed using data from a grid of permanent Forest In-ventory and Analysis (FIA) plots in conjunction with a fuzzy logic approach. This paper presents the results for the Modoc National Forest. The main foci of this paper are the methods and results for assessing the accuracy of tree size and crown closure classes using a mensurational approach based on calculations made from the plot data. This approach proved very useful in conjunction with fuzzy accuracy methods. Higher error rates reported for crown closure classes may be due to a variety of factors …

Ground Water In Northwest Arkansas: Minimizing Nutrient Contamination From Non-Point Sources In Karst Terrane, R. K. Davis, J. V. Brahana, J. S. Johnston Sep 2000

Ground Water In Northwest Arkansas: Minimizing Nutrient Contamination From Non-Point Sources In Karst Terrane, R. K. Davis, J. V. Brahana, J. S. Johnston

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The purpose of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BPMs) in preventing non-point source contamination of the ground-water resources in the karst terrane of northwestern Arkansas. Limestone and dolomite aquifers in the region are highly vulnerable to contamination. Ground-water studies performed in the region during the last two decades indicate degradation of these carbonate aquifers by nutrients and bacteria. The expeditious growth of the poultry industry during this period, in combination with the inordinate population growth of the region constitute a threat to the ground-water resources from both point sources and non-point sources of contamination. …

Illinois River 1999 Pollutant Loads At Arkansas Higway 59 Bridge, Marc A. Nelson, Thomas S. Soerens

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Automatic water samplers and aU. S. Geological Survey gauging station were established in 1995 on the main stem of the Illinois River at the Arkansas Highway 59 Bridge. Since that time, continuous stage and discharge measurements and water quality sampling have been used to determine pollutant concentrations and loads in the Arkansas portion of the Illinois River. This report represents the results from the measurement and sampling for January 1, 1999 to December 31, 1999.

Some Applications Of The Lambert W Function To Physics, Sree R. Valluri, David J. Jeffrey, Robert M. Corless Sep 2000

Some Applications Of The Lambert W Function To Physics, Sree R. Valluri, David J. Jeffrey, Robert M. Corless

Physics and Astronomy Publications

Two standard physics problems are solved in terms of the Lambert W function, in order to show the applicability of this recently defined function to physics. Other applications of the function are cited, but not described. The problems solved concern Wien’s displacement law and the fringing fields of a capacitor, the latter problem being representative of some problems solved using conformal transformations. The physical content of the solutions remains unchanged, but they gain a new elegance and convenience.
