Cyclic Dehn Surgery And The A-Polynomial, Patrick Shanahan

We present a necessary condition for Dehn surgery on a knot in double-struck S sign3 to be cyclic which is based on the A-polynomial of the knot. The condition involves a width of the Newton polygon of the A-polynomial, and provides a simple method of computing a list of possible cyclic surgery slopes. The width produces a list of at most three slopes for a hyperbolic knot which contains no closed essential surface in its complement (in agreement with the Cyclic Surgery Theorem). We conclude with an application to cyclic surgeries along non-boundary slopes of hyperbolic mutant knots.

We compare the leading and next-to-leading order Quantum Chromodynamics predictions for the flux of atmospheric muons and neutrinos from decays of charmed particles. We then compute this flux for different Partonic Distribution Functions (PDF's) and different extrapolations of these at small partonic momentum fraction x. We find that the predicted fluxes vary up to almost two orders of magnitude at the largest energies studied, depending on the chosen extrapolation of the PDF's. We show that the spectral index of the atmospheric leptonic fluxes depends linearly on the slope of the gluon distribution function at very small x. Finally, we analyze …

An effective, integrated telemedicine system has been developed that allows (a) teleconsultation between local primary health care providers (primary care physicians and general radiologists) and remote imaging subspecialists and (b) active patient participation related to his or her medical condition and patient education. The initial stage of system development was a traditional teleradiology consultation service between general radiologists and specialists; this established system was expanded to include primary care physicians and patients. The system was developed by using a well-defined process model, resulting in three integrated modules: a patient module, a primary health care provider module, and a specialist module. …

We define a notion of finite type invariants for links with a fixed linking matrix. We show that Milnor's triple link homotopy invariant is a finite type invariant, of type 1, in this sense. We also generalize the approach to Milnor's higher order homotopy invariants and show that they are also, in a sense, of finite type. Finally, we compare our approach to another approach for defining finite type invariants within linking classes.

The Intersection Graph Conjecture For Loop Diagrams, Blake Mellor

Vassiliev invariants can be studied by studying the spaces of chord diagrams associated with singular knots. To these chord diagrams are associated the intersection graphs of the chords. We extend results of Chmutov, Duzhin and Lando to show that these graphs determine the chord diagram if the graph has at most one loop. We also compute the size of the subalgebra generated by these "loop diagrams."

K-shell x-ray emission following low-energy charge exchange collisions (≤11 eV/amu) has been measured for ten bare and hydrogenic ions up to U⁹¹⁺. The data resolve capture into angular momentum states with ℓ=1 and provide a stringent test of theory. The assumption of Stark mixing of angular momentum states is inappropriate at such energies. Results from detailed calculations give a better description of the data, but significant discrepancies are noted. The measurements show that the hardness ratio of charge-exchange induced K-shell x-ray emission represents a diagnostic of the dynamics of ion-atom interactions in situations where the energy is below …

A hyporheic zone occurs beneath and adjacent to streams where surface water and groundwater mix. This zone is known to be a reservoir for solutes and a habitat for interstitial organisms. Hyporheic zone boundaries in the Tongue River, North Dakota, were investigated through examination of the physicochemical and biological gradients present in the stream channel and bank sediments. The effects of cattle grazing at the streamside interface of the riparian zone were also examined at two locations to determine land use impacts on the hyporheic zone.

The requirement for selenium (IV) was assessed in five strains of the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum Graham, representing three populations from Tasmania (Australia), as well as one each from Japan and Spain. Strains were grown in nutrient-enriched sea water medium with 10^-9 M selenium added as selenite (H₂SeO₃), or with no added selenium, and monitored for growth and cell yield. Strains exhibited different selenium (Se) requirements, as evidenced by (i) a decrease in exponential growth rate (10-20%) and cell yield (up to 80%) (Japanese strain); (ii) a decrease in cell yield only (Tasmania Derwent Estuary …

We present a fast, memory efficient algorithm that generates a manifold triangular mesh S passing through a set of unorganized points Pc R3. Nothing is assumed about the geometry, topology or presence of boundaries in the data set except that P is sampled from a real manifold surface. The speed of our algorithm is derived from a projection-based approach we use to determine the incident faces on a point. Model simplification is often used in computer graphics to reduce the complexity of large polygonal models. For many graphics applications, the goal of this process is to produce a coarser model that is visually similar to the original, allowing the complex original model to be replaced with little or no loss in perceived quality. Existing simplification techniques, however, rely on geometry-based heuristics as an indirect indicator of visual similarity. We propose a novel image-driven simplification method that uses rendered images of a model and an image metric as a means of measuring visual similarity. Using this approach, changes in appearance …

Emissions from household stoves, especially those using solid fuels, can contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and have adverse health impacts. Few data are available on emissions from the numerous types of cookstoves used in developing countries. We have systematically measured emissions from 56 fuel/stove combinations in India and China, a large fraction of the combinations in use world-wide. In striated muscle, the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is the major storage compartment of intracellular Ca2+ that controls cytosolic free Ca2+ (Cai) and developed force by sequestering and releasing Ca2+ during each contraction. Ca2+ release from the SR occurs through high-conductance Ca2+ release channels or ryanodine receptors (RyR), which are regulated by various signaling processes. Over the last 15 years, there has been a growing consensus that critical sulfhydryl sites on RyRs can be oxidized and reduced, respectively, to open and close the release channels. The synthesis of trialkoxyalkyl substituted NLO chromophores has been investigated. The chromophore 2-(7-(3-hydroxydiphenylamino)-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl)-benzothiazole was prepared by a five step process. Bromination of fluorene yielded 2,7-dibromo-fluorene which could be converted to 2,7-dibromo-9,9-diethylfluorene by alkylation with ethyl iodide in DMSO.Reaction of 2,7-dibromo-9,9-diethylfluorene with one equivalent of butyl lithium followed by reaction with DMF provides 2-bromo-7-formyl-9,9-diethylfluorene. Condensation of 2-bromo-7-formyl-9,9-diethylfluorene and 2-aminobenzenethiol in DMSO results in the formation of 2-(7-bromo-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl)benzothiazole. The conversion of 3-hydroxydiphenylamine to 3-benzyloxy-diphenylamine was accomplished with benzyl bromide and potassium carbonate in DMF. A palladium catalyzed coupling of 3-benzyloxydiphenylamine and 2-(7-bromo-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl)benzothiazole provided 2-(7-(3-hydroxydiphenyl-amino)-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl)benzothiazole. Diatom profiles in closed-basin lake sediments are commonly used to reconstruct climate change based on the observed correlations between salinity (ionic concentration) and modern diatom assemblages. Diatom assemblages are strongly correlated not only with salinity but also anion composition, with certain taxa characteristic of carbonate systems and others sulfate-dominated waters. Although strong correlations exist, the actual mechanisms behind these correlations are unknown. Here we briefly review the influence of salinity and ionic composition on nutrient dynamics in saline lakes and suggest that these interactions may drive shifts in diatom species composition along gradients of ionic concentration/ composition. We present a wide-field, high dynamic range, high-resolution, long-wavelength (lambda = 90 cm) VLA image of the Galactic center region. The image is centered on Sgr A, covers an area of 4 degrees x 5 degrees with an angular resolution of 43 ", and has a rms sensitivity of approximate to 5 mJy beam-l. The image was constructed from archival (1989 and 1991) VLA data of Pedlar et al. and Anantharamaiah et al. using new three-dimensional image restoration techniques. These three-dimensional imaging techniques resolve the problem of non-coplanar baselines encountered at long wavelengths and yield distortion-free imaging of far-field sources …

We present VLA H I observations of the low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy UGC 12695 and its two companions, UGC 12687 and a newly discovered dwarf galaxy 2333 + 1234. UGC 12695 shows solid-body rotation but has a very lopsided morphology of the H I disk, with the majority of the H I lying in the southern arm of the galaxy. The H I column density distribution of this very blue LSB galaxy coincides in detail with its light distribution. Portfolios serve many roles in the development of prospective teachers. Faculty at Brooklyn College found that portfolios can play two other important roles — as tools in faculty development and as a conduit in the development and description of college curriculum. Faculty came together to design a portfolio outline which both defined the introductory mathematics methods course and facilitated establishment of standards. The format was adapted for other populations, each time being modified to suit the new context.

Although laboratory instruction for non-science majors is a major goal of higher education, its implementation is often difficult in practice. Non-science students are often uncomfortable with a laboratory environment and require close supervision for the laboratory instruction to be effective. To address this problem, support from the New York Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (NYCETP) was used to recruit and train undergraduate Teaching Scholars to assist in the instructional laboratories of NYU’s core science program. This article describes the use of case studies as part of the formative evaluation conducted for the New York Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (NYCETP). While case studies are often conducted for evaluations by outside experts, consultants, or evaluators themselves, we developed a strategy for case studies that used NYCETP faculty to case-study each other. This strategy involved cross-campus collaboration and cross-discipline (Arts & Science and Education) collaboration, and thus actively supported one of the NYCETP goals. Chladni Patterns are formed when sand settles at the nodes of two dimensional standing waves, excited on a metallic plate which is driven at a resonant frequency. By considering a two-dimensional rectangular membrane with fixed boundary and constant density as an idealized model of the metal plate, a formula for predicting the Chladni Patterns that will form at certain frequencies can be found. In addition to mathematically exploring these mysterious patterns, I have created my own “Chladni Patterns” in the lab.
