Codes, Correlations And Power Control In Ofdm, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab, Kenneth G. Paterson

Practical communications engineering is continually producing problems of interest to the coding theory community. A recent example is the power-control problem in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). We report recent work which gives a mathematical framework for generating solutions to this notorious problem that are suited to low-cost wireless applications. The key result is a connection between Golay complementary sequences and Reed-Muller codes. The former are almost ideal for OFDM transmissions because they have a very low peak-to-mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR), while the latter have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms and good error correction capability. Critical Adsorption On Curved Objects, Andreas Hanke, S. Dietrich

A systematic field-theoretical description of critical adsorption on curved objects such as spherical or rodlike colloidal particles immersed in a fluid near criticality is presented. The temperature dependence of the corresponding order parameter profiles and of the excess adsorption are calculated explicitly. Critical adsorption on elongated rods is substantially more pronounced than on spherical particles. It turns out that, within the context of critical phenomena in confined geometries, critical adsorption on a microscopically thin ‘‘needle’’ represents a distinct universality class of its own. Under favorable conditions the results are relevant for the flocculation of colloidal particles.

The specific resistance model of cake filtration is based on the assumption that the average cake resistance is constant over time. This implies also that the spatially average values of porosity and pressure differential are also constant over time since specific resistance is a function of both parameters.

An analytical cake filtration model based on Tiller (1975) was derived using constitutive properties of kaolin suspensions in distilled water. Constitutive properties were determined by experiments performed using high-energy X-rays and porewater pressure probes to determine the spatial and temporal distributions of porosity and porewater pressure. We investigate the stability of the coupled soliton solutions of a two-component Z(2) vector fieldmodel, in contraposition to similar solutions of a Z(2)×Z(2)model recently introduced. We demonstrate that the coupled soliton solutions of the Z(2) model are classically unstable.

We assess the noise characteristics in time series of daily position estimates for 23 globally distributed Global Positioning System (GPS) stations with 3 years of data, using spectral analysis and Maximum Likelihood Estimation. A combination of white noise and flicker noise appears to be the best model for the noise characteristics of all three position components. Both white and flicker noise amplitudes are smallest in the north component and largest in the vertical component. The white noise part of the vertical component is higher for tropical stations (±23° latitude) compared to midlatitude stations. Velocity error in a GPS coordinate time …
