Computer Science Faculty Publications

This report documents findings and recommendations by the Ultrafast Computing Team (UCT). In the period 10-12/98, UCT reviewed design case scenarios for a supersonic transport and a reusable launch vehicle to derive computing requirements necessary for support of a design process with efficiency so radically improved that human thought rather than the computer paces the process. Assessment of the present computing capability against the above requirements indicated a need for further improvement in computing speed by several orders of magnitude to reduce time to solution from tens of hours to seconds in major applications. Evaluation of the trends in computer …

We describe the digital library (DL) for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the NACA Technical Report Server (NACATRS). The predecessor organization for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), NACA existed from 1915 until 1958. The primary manifestation of NACA's research was the NACA report series. We describe the process of converting this collection of reports to digital format and making it available on the World Wide Web (WWW) and is a node in the NASA Technical Report Server (NTRS). We describe the current state of the project, the resulting DL technology developed from the project, and the …

Reconfigurable Shift Switching Parallel Comparators, R. Lin, S. Olariu Jan 1999

Reconfigurable Shift Switching Parallel Comparators, R. Lin, S. Olariu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We present novel asynchronous VLSI comparator schemes which are based on recently proposed reconfigurable shift switch logic and the traditional (precharged) CMOS domino logic. The schemes always produce a semaphore as a by-product of the process to indicate the end of domino process, which requires no additional delay and a minimal number of additional devices. For a large percentage of inputs the computations are much faster than traditional synchronous comparators due to the full utilization of the inherent speed of the circuits. Also the schemes are simple, area compact and stable.

Photodecolorization And Photodegradation Of Crystal Violet Adsorbed On Metal Oxide Surfaces, Reygan Mashay Freeney Jan 1999

Photodecolorization And Photodegradation Of Crystal Violet Adsorbed On Metal Oxide Surfaces, Reygan Mashay Freeney

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The photodecolorization and the photodegradation of the triphenylmethane dye crystal violet (basic violet 3) adsorbed on four metal oxide catalysts was studied. Crystal violet dissolved in methanol was adsorbed onto the surfaces of an anatase and rutile titanium dioxide mixture, rutile titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and magnesium oxide, and the solvent was allowed to evaporate. The samples were irradiated using a 1000 W mercury-xenon arc lamp with glass optics as a light source. A wide spectrum and narrow regions of the spectrum were studied to determine their impact on the decolorization and degradation of crystal violet. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was …

Reconstructing Subsets Of Reals, A. J. Radcliffe, A. D. Scott Jan 1999

Reconstructing Subsets Of Reals, A. J. Radcliffe, A. D. Scott

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We consider the problem of reconstructing a set of real numbers up to translation from the multiset of its subsets of fixed size, given up to translation. This is impossible in general: for instance almost all subsets of Z contain infinitely many translates of every finite subset of Z. We therefore restrict our attention to subsets of R which are locally finite; those which contain only finitely many translates of any given finite set of size at least 2. We prove that every locally finite subset of R is reconstructible from the multiset of its 3-subsets, given up to …

Algebraic Geometric Codes Over Rings, Judy L. Walker Jan 1999

Algebraic Geometric Codes Over Rings, Judy L. Walker

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The techniques of algebraic geometry have been widely and successfully applied to the study of linear codes over finite fields since the early 1980’s. Recently, there has been an increased interest in the study of linear codes over finite rings. In this paper, we combine these two approaches to coding theory by introducing the study of algebraic geometric codes over rings. In addition to defining these new codes, we prove several results about their properties.

Body Mass Patterns Predict Invasions And Extinctions In Transforming Landscapes, Craig R. Allen, Elizabeth A. Forys, C. S. Holling Jan 1999

Body Mass Patterns Predict Invasions And Extinctions In Transforming Landscapes, Craig R. Allen, Elizabeth A. Forys, C. S. Holling

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Scale-specific patterns of resource distribution on landscapes entrain attributes of resident animal communities such that species body-mass distributions are organized into distinct aggregations. Species within each aggregation respond to resources over the same range of scale. This discontinuous pattern has predictive power: invasive species and extinct or declining species in landscapes subject to human transformation tend to be located at the edge of body-mass aggregations (P < 0.01), which may be transition zones between distinct ranges of scale. Location at scale breaks affords species great opportunity, but also potential crisis.

Development And Evaluation Of A Standard Weight (WS) Equation For Blue Catfish, Maurice I. Muoneke, Kevin L. Pope

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Using a data set composed of 33 populations from six states, we employed the regression-linepercentile technique to develop a standard weight equation for blue catfish Ictalurus furcatus and validated it with an independent data set composed of 43 populations from 10 states. The equation is log10Ws=-6.067+ 3.400 log10TL, where Ws is standard weight in grams and TL is total length in millimeters. The English-unit equivalent (pounds and inches) is log10Ws=-3.950+ 3.400 log10TL. The equation is valid for blue catfish 160 mm (approximately 6 in) TL and longer. …

1999 Wildlife Management Area Threatened And Endangered Species Inventory, Final Report, Robert F. Steinauer

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

This study was undertaken to determine the extent of threatened and endangered (T&E) species habitats and high-quality native plant communities on Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program (NHP) is responsible for environmental reviews of state projects that may impact threatened and endangered (T&E) species in Nebraska, including proposed management actions on state Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). These environmental reviews require a significant amount of NHP staff time, and frequently find no adverse impacts associated with the proposed management actions. This survey was undertaken to improve Nebraska Game and Parks Commissions (NGPC) …

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

An inventory of potential high quality mixed-grass prairie ranches and large properties within the Central Mixed-Grass Prairie Ecoregion of Kansas and Nebraska was conducted in the spring and summer of 1999. Emphasis during the inventory was placed on identification of relatively intact landscapes. Significant ranches within those untilled landscapes were visited. An interview of the owners or managers of those properties was coupled with a survey of the vegetation. Assessments of quality were based on species composition, continuity of ground cover, observations of livestock impact, and viability of the community types present.

The objectives of this study were to:

1) …

Development Of Regional Climate Scenarios Using A Downscaling Approach, David Easterling Jan 1999

Development Of Regional Climate Scenarios Using A Downscaling Approach, David Easterling

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

As the debate on potential climate change continues, it is becoming increasingly clear that the main concerns to the general public are the potential impacts of a change in the climate on societal and biophysical systems. In order to address these concerns researchers need realistic, plausible scenarios of climate change suitable for use in impacts analysis. It is the purpose of this paper to present a downscaling method useful for developing these types of scenarios that are grounded in both General Circulation Model simulations of climate change, and in situ station data. Free atmosphere variables for four gridpoints over the …

Evidence Of A Feeding Aggregation Of Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) Around Kodiak Island, Alaska, Janice Waite, Marilyn Dahlheim, Roderick Hobbs, Sally Mizroch Jan 1999

Evidence Of A Feeding Aggregation Of Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) Around Kodiak Island, Alaska, Janice Waite, Marilyn Dahlheim, Roderick Hobbs, Sally Mizroch

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The known summer feeding range of the North Pacific humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) extends from California, along the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, into the Bering Sea, along the Aleutian Islands, the Sea of Okhotsk (Tomilin 1957), and to northern Japan (Rice 1977). In feeding areas of the northeastern Pacific Ocean, humpback whale photoidentification research has been concentrated off California (Calambokidis et al. 1993), southeastern Alaska (Darling and McSweeney 1985, Baker et al. 1986, 1992; Perry et al. 1990), Prince William Sound in Alaska (von Ziegesar 1992), the Oregon and Washington coasts (Calambokidis et al. 1993), and …

Reality And Theory In A Collision, Norman Derby, Robert Fuller Jan 1999

Reality And Theory In A Collision, Norman Derby, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Billiard-ball collisions are frequently cited in introductory physics textbooks, usually as examples of elastic collisions. Many articles describing such collisions have appeared in this journal and elsewhere, but comparisons between theoretical results and actual collisions are rare, and most of the theoretical analyses have simply assumed friction to be negligible during the collision time. Students trying to simulate billiard-ball collisions on a popular simulation program such as Interactive Physics® may encounter interesting collisions, such as ones in which the cue ball is thrown up into the air when the frictional coefficients are set at even modest levels. We decided to …

Digital Signal Propagation In Dispersive Media., P. M. Jordan, Ashok Puri Jan 1999

Digital Signal Propagation In Dispersive Media., P. M. Jordan, Ashok Puri

Physics Faculty Publications

In this article, the propagation of digital and analog signals through media which, in general, are both dissipative and dispersive is modeled using the one-dimensional telegraph equation. Input signals are represented using impulsive, Heaviside unit step, Gaussian, rectangular pulse, and both unmodulated and modulated sinusoidal pulse type boundary data. Applications to coaxial transmission lines and freshwater signal propagation, for both digital and analog signals, are included. The analysis presented here supports the finding that digital transmission in dispersive media is generally superior to that of analog. The boundary data (input signals) give rise to solutions of the telegraph equation which …

Stretchability Of Star-Like Pseudo-Visibility Graphs, Ileana Streinu Jan 1999

Stretchability Of Star-Like Pseudo-Visibility Graphs, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We present advances on the open problem of characterizing vertex-edge visibility graphs (ve-graphs), reduced by results of O'Rourke and Streinu to a stretchability question for pseudo-polygons. We introduce star-like pseudo-polygons as a special subclass containing all the known instances of non-stretchable pseudo-polygons. We give a complete combinatorial characterization and a linear-time decision procedure for star-like pseudo-polygon stretchability and star-like ve-graph recognition. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first problem in computational geometry for which a combinatorial characterization was found by first isolating the oriented matroid substructure and then separately solving the stretchability question. It is also the …

Locked And Unlocked Polygonal Chains In 3d, Therese Biedl, Erik D. Demaine, Martin L. Demaine, Sylvain Lazard, Anna Lubiw, Joseph O'Rourke, Mark Overmars, Steve Robbins, Ileana Streinu, Godfried Toussaint, Sue Whitesides

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study movements of simple polygonal chains in 3D. We say that an open, simple polygonal chain can be straightened if it can be continuously reconfigured to a straight sequence of segments in such a manner that both the length of each link and the simplicity of the chain are maintained throughout the movement. The analogous concept for closed chains is convexification: reconfiguration to a planar convex polygon. Chains that cannot be straightened or convexified are called locked. While there are open chains in 3D that are locked, we show that if an open chain has a …

^{13}C-And ^{31}P-Nmr Study Of Tetracarbonylbis(Diphenylphosphino)Alkanemetal(0) Complexes Of The Group 6 Elements, Zahi̇de Özer, Sai̇m Özkar

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Tetracarbonylbis(diphenylphosphino)alkanemetal(0) complexes of the general formula M(CO)_4[(C_6H_5)_2P (CH_2)_nP(C_6H_5)_2] (M: Cr, Mo, W; n: 1, 2, 3) were synthesized from the reaction of M(CO)_4(\eta^{2:2}-1,5-cyclooctadiene) with the appropriate ligand and characterized by means of IR and NMR (^{13}C and ^{31}P) spectroscopy. Spectroscopic data shows that two phosphorus atoms in the complexes are identical and occupy two cis-coordiantion sites in a pseudo-octahedral coordination sphere of the metal. The comparative study of the coordination shift and the ^{31}P-^{13}C coupling constant reveals that two carbonyl groups trans to one of two phosphorus atoms in the diphosphine ligand are shifted toward the lower magnetic field more …

Thermodynamics Of The Dissociation Of Chromium Soap Solutions In Benzene-Dimethyl Formamide, Hüseyi̇n Topallar, Yüksel Bayrak Jan 1999

Thermodynamics Of The Dissociation Of Chromium Soap Solutions In Benzene-Dimethyl Formamide, Hüseyi̇n Topallar, Yüksel Bayrak

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Critical micelle concentrations and dissociation constants for chromium soaps (myristate, palmitate and stearate) in a mixture of benzene and dimethyl formamide (7:3, vol/vol) were determined by means of conductivity measurements. These soaps behave as simple moderate electrolytes in dilute solutions. Critical micelle concentrations and dissociation constants decreased with increasing numbers of carbon atoms in the soap molecules. Thermodynamic parameters such as heat of dissociation, \DeltaH_d, change in free energy, \DeltaG_d, and entropy, \DeltaS_d, per mole for the dissociation process were also evaluated.

The Effect Of Phosphate Ions (Po^{3-}_4) On The Corrosion Of Iron In Sulphat Solutions, Günay Kilinççeker, B. Yazici, M. Erbi̇l, H. Gali̇p Jan 1999

The Effect Of Phosphate Ions (Po^{3-}_4) On The Corrosion Of Iron In Sulphat Solutions, Günay Kilinççeker, B. Yazici, M. Erbi̇l, H. Gali̇p

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The effect of phosphate ions on the corrosion of iron in sulphate solutions at different temperatures (293 K, 313 K, 333 K and 353 K) and at different pH (pH=2.1, 7.2 and 12.3) values was investigated. The electrochemical three-electrode technique was employed. The cathodic and anodic current-potential curves were obtained by strating from the corrosion potential measured against SCE and polarizing it first in cathodic and then in anodic direction. The results obtained indicate that at high pH (pH=7.2 and 12.3) SO^{2-}_{4}+PO^{3-}_{4}ions together reduce the corrosion rate of iron to a greater extent than SO^{2-}_{4} alone. At low pH (pH=2.1), …

The Role Of Electrolytically Co-Deposited Platinum-Palladium Electrodes On The Electrooxidation Of D. Glucose In Alkaline Medium: A Synergistic Effect, İpek Beceri̇k Jan 1999

The Role Of Electrolytically Co-Deposited Platinum-Palladium Electrodes On The Electrooxidation Of D. Glucose In Alkaline Medium: A Synergistic Effect, İpek Beceri̇k

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The electrooxidation of D. glucose was investigated on platinum-palladium alloy electrodes of different compositions in alkaline aqueous solutions. The surface characteristics of the alloys in contact with electrolytic solution were studied using cyclic voltammetry. In particular, a surface enrichment in platinum due to a preferential dissolution of palladium was shown. Enhanced electrocatalytic activity at about 37 at. % in Pd was obtained when compared to pure metals, thus leading to a synergistic effect. The electrocatalytic activity of different alloys for D. glucose oxidation has been chacterized by exchange current densities obtained from extrapolation of Tafel lines to calculated equilibrium potential. …

Electrooxidation Of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (Las) On Pt Electrodes, Bi̇rgül Yazici, Si̇bel Zor Jan 1999

Electrooxidation Of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (Las) On Pt Electrodes, Bi̇rgül Yazici, Si̇bel Zor

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The electrochemical behaviour of linear alklybenzene sulfonate (LAS) on Pt electrodes was investigated in 0.05M Na_2SO_4 and in 0.1M NaCl at pH=8 by the potentiokinetic method and by electrolysis. The anodic and cathodic semilogarithmic current-potential curves were obtained between -1.6V - +1.6V. The experimental discharge potentials were determined by means of current-potential-curves obtained by electrolysis between 0-3V. The percentages of surface active material remaining in the solution after specified periods (0-6hrs) were determined for different initial concentrations of LAS (30, 150, 300 ppm) by using a potentiostat at +1.6V and by applying a potential of 20V via a direct current …
