Feldspars and mica minerals are the two primary natural sources of potassium for most agricultural soils in Kentucky. Potassium feldspars are common mineral constituents of loess deposits in western Kentucky. Mica minerals, although dominant in shales, are also found in variable quantities in siltstone, sandstone and limestone parent materials of soils in the other regions of Kentucky. Because most of the soils in the western Coalfields and western Pennyroyal, and to a lesser extent in eastern Pennyroyal and Bluegrass, are covered by a loess cap of variable thickness, their surface mineralogy has been influenced by the feldspar-rich mineralogy of the …

During the past 30 years, the use of commercial fertilizer in Kentucky has resulted in increases in the levels of phosphorus and potassium in soils. As might be expected, the soil test levels are higher with tobacco than with any other crop. but all soils for all crops show increases in fertility levels. Comparisons between 1975 and 1985 (the latest year available) show the proportion of samples sent to the University of Kentucky that are medium or high in soil test phosphorus has increased considerably. Even more striking is the decrease in very low values of phosphorus.

Several subsurface soil and groundwater samples from eastern, southern and central Arkansas were analyzed for chlorinated organic compounds commonly used as pesticides and industrial chemicals. No significant amount of these compounds were found in these samples. The adsorption/partition characteristics of some of these compounds, such as dichlorophenols, aldrin and endrin, were determined in siltloam, sandyloam and clay soils collected from the above geographical locations. Results indicate that there is considerable difference in retention capability of different types of soils with respect to different pollutants. Timber harvesting and residue reduction practices that alter shade, surface thermal properties, and moisture influence energy balance and heat transfer on the site, significantly influencing temperatures. Because the problems of mortality to seedlings due to high temperature and insufficient moisture are potentially widespread and expensive, it is crucial to be able to identify problem sites during the planning process.

Concentrates on estimating the spatial correlations between soil water infiltration observations, with special emphasis on resistant methods to remove nonstationarity. After this removal, robust semivariogram estimators are used to examine the spatial dependencies for various tillage treatments. There is some indication that infiltration characteristics inherit different types of spatial dependency, depending on the tillage treatment applied.-from Authors
