Some Experiments In Molecular Contact, James S. Stevens Jan 1899

Some Experiments In Molecular Contact, James S. Stevens

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship

In working with an interferometer it was observed that one could slide the brass plate which carries the movable mirror along the bed upon which it lies so that the fringes would suffer displacement for a small but definite amount, and that when the plate was released they would return to their original position. The idea occurred to me that it might be possible to measure these displacements for given weights applied to move the mirror-plate, and ascertain if they followed any law, and what relation these experiments bore to the ordinary experiments for finding the coefficients of friction.

The Effect Of Magnetization Upon The Elasticity Of Rods, J. S. Stevens, H. G. Dorsey Jan 1899

The Effect Of Magnetization Upon The Elasticity Of Rods, J. S. Stevens, H. G. Dorsey

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship

In the Physical Review, Vol. II, No. 4 and Vol. III., No. 6, is described a series of important experiments which show the relation between temperature and elasticity in wire. In one of the papers the statement was made that the results seem to indicate that the magnetizing effect of the current through the wire increases the modulus of elasticity. The increase in temperature in the wire was produced by sending a current directly through it, and also by sending a current through the helix that surrounded it. The author stated that "the magnetization produced by the first method had …

A Determination Of The Modulus Of Elasticity For Small Loads, Charles P. Weston Jan 1899

A Determination Of The Modulus Of Elasticity For Small Loads, Charles P. Weston

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship

"At the suggestion of Professor James S. Stevens, and under his supervision, I undertook to apply interference methods of measurement to an experimental determination of Young's modulus for copper, brass, and steel. The metals were in the form of bars, 66 cm x 1 cm x 0.5 cm (approximate dimensions). The general method followed was the so-called "method of flexure" in which a bar, supported at each end on knife edges, if deflected by a weight applied at the center,

Abnormal Vapor Densities, Minnie Elizabeth Rice Jan 1899

Abnormal Vapor Densities, Minnie Elizabeth Rice

Student and Lippitt Prize essays

This essay questions Italian chemist Avogadro’s hypothesis about vapor densities, ultimately coming to the conclusion that Avogadro’s law is open to objection.

Assay Of Copper Matte For Gold And Silver, Walter E. Soest Jan 1899

Assay Of Copper Matte For Gold And Silver, Walter E. Soest

Bachelors Theses

"Ores containing copper, and especially copper matte, have always been very annoying in assaying for the precious metals. In assaying copper matte, and ores containing much copper, by the usual method of scorification, the losses of silver an gold are considerable, owing to the fact that in order to obtain lead buttons, which are soft and free from copper, repeated scorifications are necessary, and moreover it is impossible to obtain lead buttons which are entirely free from copper"--page 1.

The Neocene Lake Beds Of Western Montana And Descriptions Of Some New Vertebrates From The Loup Fork, Earl Douglass Jan 1899

The Neocene Lake Beds Of Western Montana And Descriptions Of Some New Vertebrates From The Loup Fork, Earl Douglass

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Since coming to Montana in the spring of 1894 I have spent rnuoh of ay time in studying the lake bed deposits in the western part of the state, and in collecting and studying the vertebrate fossils found in them. These deposits occur in nearly every large valley in the westem part of the state. I have myself observed them in the valleys of the upper Missouri (above the re-rrion of Helena), Gallatin, Madison, Jefferson, Beaverhead, Ruby, Big Hole, Hell Gate, and Bitter Boot rivers, and their tributaries.

Wells And Windmills In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour Jan 1899

Wells And Windmills In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Publications of the US Geological Survey

SIR :

I have the honor to transmit herewith a manuscript entitled "Wells and Windmills in Nebraska," prepared by Erwin Hinckley Barbour, professor of geology in the University of Nebraska and acting State geologist. The data for this manuscript were obtained by Professor Barbour incidental to his studies of the geology of the State, and have been rounded out by special work carried on under his direction. The original manuscript as prepared consisted of two parts the first upon wells, and the second upon homemade windmills but owing to delays in printing the first part, it has been considered advisable …
