Constrained Multiview Contrastive Learning For Jointly Supervised Representation Learning, Siyuan Dai, Kai Ye, Kun Zhao, Yang Du, Haoteng Tang, Liang Zhan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Purpose
To develop a mutual information (MI)–based mechanism for quantifying representation distance, and to introduce a constrained multiview learning paradigm that dynamically re-ranks and selects sample views, thereby improving contrastive representation learning for lung lesion segmentation on CT images—addressing the difficulty of measuring distances in high-dimensional feature spaces and the impracticality of constructing large positive–negative sample banks in the medical domain.Materials and Methods
The proposed framework, termed MIMIC (Mutual Information-based constrained Multi-view Contrastive learning), generates multiple frequency-domain views of CT images and performs a dynamic MI-based representation re-ranking and selection process to improve the quality of positive and negative …Morphometric Analysis Of Gypsum Depressions Using Drone Imagery At Sinkhole Flat, Eddy County, New Mexico, Usa, Michael Sean Chenoweth
Morphometric Analysis Of Gypsum Depressions Using Drone Imagery At Sinkhole Flat, Eddy County, New Mexico, Usa, Michael Sean Chenoweth
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Morphometric analysis is conducted on five karst depressions in Permian-age gypsum of southeast New Mexico. These depressions take on the form of classically shaped blind valleys and sinkholes. Blind valleys in this study are disappearing surface streams composed of multiple tributaries that connect to the main trunk channel leading to a cave entrance. A visible light (RGB) sensor mounted on a quadcopter is used to collect aerial imagery for karst depression mapping and analysis. Field measurements were taken for each depression for comparison with the drone imagery and its derivative layers such as digital elevation model (DEM) and slope. Drone …
Shadowless In A World Of Shadows: Diminishing The Refraction Of Light Via Nanoconfinement, Vuk Uskoković
Shadowless In A World Of Shadows: Diminishing The Refraction Of Light Via Nanoconfinement, Vuk Uskoković
Administration and Staff Articles and Research
This paper presents a physicochemical study that merges science and art in the context of exploring the refractive index of water under nanoconfinement. Using a simple and economical experimental approach, it is shown that confinement within the micropores of a zeolitic structure, characterized using electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, paradoxically reduces the refractive index of water, bringing confined water droplets closer to a shadowless state. Counterintuitively, water under confinement, as indicated by vibrational spectroscopic analyses performed in the transmittance mode in the IR range and reflectance mode in the near-IR range, exhibits greater structural freedom than in its bulk or …

Mangroves are widely recognized for their contribution to climate change mitigation. This study provides the first comprehensive assessment of top 1-m and 30-cm soil organic carbon (OC) stocks and accumulation rates across Western Australia’s mangroves, spanning multiple bioregions, geomorphological settings, and intertidal positions. The results revealed (mean ± SE) 236 ± 13 Mg and 83 ± 4 Mg OC ha−1 in top 1-m and 30-cm soils, respectively, accumulated at 443 ± 83 and 215 ± 22 kg OC ha−1 yr−1 over the past 100 and 500 years, respectively. Mangroves across Western Australia exhibited up to 3-fold differences in top 1-m …

Never Say Never: The Interdependence Of No-Till And Strategic Deep Tillage In Sustainable Production Systems, Therese Mcbeath, Stephen Davies, John A. Kirkegaard
Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
No-till (NT) farming systems are a defining feature of modern conservation agriculture (CA), providing benefits for soil and water conservation, operational efficiency, and resource use efficiency. However, long-term NT adoption across Australian dryland cropping systems has also intensified inherent and emergent soil constraints, including subsurface compaction, topsoil water repellence, acidity, and nutrient stratification. These constraints limit crop water use and yield potential. In the sandy soils of southern and western Australia, strategic deep tillage (SDT) has been developed in otherwise NT systems to alleviate these constraints. Advances in machinery design and controlled traffic systems have enabled deeper, more effective amelioration …

This paper examines the role of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme in electronic waste (e-waste) management in Singapore. It investigates the policy drivers and challenges of e-waste management, using data from an online survey to explore the attitudes and behaviors of young consumers, with a particular focus on youth. We employ the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) frameworks to develop a model that examines the relationships among attitudes, perceived norms, awareness, and perceived convenience in relation to EPR awareness and perception. The findings highlight the need for customized policies tailored to different …

Generalized Logit Adjustment: Improved Fine-Tuning By Mitigating Label Bias In Zero-Shot Vision Models, Beier Zhu, Qianru Sun, Xun Yang, Hanwang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Foundation models like CLIP allow zero-shot transfer on various tasks without additional training data. Yet, the zero-shot performance is less competitive than a fully supervised one. Thus, fine-tuning and ensembling are also commonly adopted to better fit the downstream tasks. However, we argue that such prior work has overlooked the inherent biases in foundation models. Due to the highly imbalanced Web-scale training set, foundation models are inevitably skewed toward frequent semantics, and thus the subsequent fine-tuning or ensembling is still biased. In this study, we systematically examine the biases in foundation models and demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed Generalized …

6-DoF LiDAR-based localization is a fundamental capability for autonomous systems operating in large-scale outdoor environments. Many deep-learning-based localization methods have achieved promising performance so far. However, as one of the always-on modules competing for limited on-board computational resources, the localization module is expected to consume only a small portion of the overall compute budget. Most existing learning-based methods are still too heavy for this purpose. In contrast, binary neural networks (BNNs) offer an appealing solution, but the 1-bit compression causes severe information loss and performance drop. In this paper, we address this challenge by proposing Binarized LiDAR-based Localization (BiLoc), the …

Smart: When Is It Actually Worth Expanding A Speculative Tree?, Lifu Wang, Pan Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Tree-based speculative decoding accelerates autoregressive generation by verifying a branching tree of draft tokens in a single targetmodel forward pass. However, existing methods prioritize maximizing token-level likelihood or the number of accepted tokens while ignoring a critical “efficiency paradox”: the computational overhead of drafting and verifying big trees can grow super-linearly, particularly at scale. This often leads to negative wall-clock speedup when batch sizes increase or hardware saturation limits are reached. To address this, we propose SMART, a System-aware Marginal Analysis framework for Runtime Tree construction. SMART reformulates tree expansion as a hardware-aware optimization problem that directly maximizes end-toend speedup. …
Autoqresearch: Llm-Guided Closed-Loop Policy Search For Adaptive Variational Quantum Optimization, Monit Sharma, Hoong Chuin Lau
Autoqresearch: Llm-Guided Closed-Loop Policy Search For Adaptive Variational Quantum Optimization, Monit Sharma, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Configuring variational quantum algorithms for combinatorial optimization remains a difficult, expert-driven process requiring coordinated choices over solver family, ansatz, objective, and optimizer. We present AutoQResearch, an LLM-guided closed-loop experimentation framework that casts this task as sequential policy search over a curated design space. Instead of a single static configuration, the framework searches for adaptive solver-control policies that condition future decisions on diagnostics such as feasibility, optimality gap, and convergence stagnation. The system operates through a structured workflow: an LLM agent edits a small policy surface under a fixed evaluation harness, candidate policies are screened using cheap scout evaluations, and only the …

Predictive Modeling Of Heavy Metal Pollution And Ecological Risk For Sustainable Water Quality Management In The Ny–Nj Harbor System, Md Shahnul Islam, Sara Naveed, Huan Feng, Tapos Kumar Chakraborty
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Evaluating and forecasting surface water quality is essential for protecting aquatic ecosystems and improving water resource management. This study introduces a novel paradigm that integrates machine learning (ML) with the potential ecological risk index (PERI) to dynamically forecast, rather than statically assess, ecological risks from heavy metal contamination in an urban estuarine environment. Surface water samples from the Lower Passaic River in New Jersey, USA, were analyzed for copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) across multiple sites and sampling campaigns. Concentrations ranged from 3.1 to 42.6 µg/L for Cu, 1.8 to 25.4 µg/L for Pb, and 0.12 …

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a critical role in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) by preparing students to address complex social, environmental, and economic challenges. In the literature, less attention has been paid to scalable curricular models implemented in small liberal arts colleges. This paper presents a case study of Lynn University’s Impact Series, an interdisciplinary and co-curricular initiative, intentionally integrated into the undergraduate curriculum to advance Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Drawing on institutional reports, program documentation, and attendance data from Fall 2022 through Spring 2025, the study examines how the Impact Series promotes short-term …

Researchers have exhibited ways in which prospective secondary mathematics teachers can connect content from abstract algebra with secondary mathematics in ways that reshape their understanding of secondary mathematics and thereby support their teaching of that content. However, there has been very little research done on what mathematics teacher educators can do in the classroom to help prospective teachers make connections between abstract algebra and secondary algebra in ways that support such reshaping. This study focuses on a mathematics teacher educator who guided a class of prospective teachers to connect properties of algebraic structures with equation-solving procedures by directing their focus …

Numerous early Cenozoic transient warming events (“hyperthermals”) have been recognized in the marine record, but few have been located in fossiliferous terrestrial strata. Locating warming events is critical for understanding how terrestrial animals and plants responded to past climate change. We recognize two carbon isotope excursions (CIEs) in lower Paleocene (Danian) strata of the San Juan Basin, New Mexico, United States, based on sustained decreases in carbon isotope values in bulk organic carbon. The upper excursion correlates closely with the Latest Danian Event (LDE) hyperthermal, previously known with confidence only from the marine record. We correlate the lower excursion to …
