We combine CO column measurements from the MOPITT, AIRS, SCIAMACHY, and TES satellite instruments in a full-year (May 2004–April 2005) global inversion of CO sources at 4◦ ×5◦ spatial resolution and monthly temporal resolution. The inversion uses the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model (CTM) and its adjoint applied to MOPITT, AIRS, and SCIAMACHY. Observations from TES, surface sites (NOAA/GMD), and aircraft (MOZAIC) are used for evaluation of the a posteriori solution. Using GEOSChem as a common intercomparison platform shows global consistency between the different satellite datasets and with the in situ data. Differences can be largely explained by different averaging kernels …

The Precambrian shield of northern Greenland has been investigated by SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating of 14 orthogneisses and granitoids plus 5 metasediments, integrated with mapping by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland and whole-rock Nd isotopic studies. The Inglefield Mobile Belt is a tract of Palaeoproterozoic sedimentation, plutonism, polyphase deformation and high-grade metamorphism that underlies Inglefield Land and northern Prudhoe Land. In the southern part of the belt at 78 degrees 30'N, the E-W-trending Sunrise Pynt Straight Belt is a high-grade, but structurally late, shear zone with contrasts in the geology on either side. South of the Sunrise Pynt …

High Resolution Analysis Of Uranium And Thorium Concentration As Well As U-Series Isotope Distributions In A Neanderthal Tooth From Payre (Ardeche, France) Using Laser Ablation Icp-Ms, R. Grun, Maxime Aubert, Renaud C. Joannes-Boyau, M-H Moncel

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

We have mapped U (238U) and Th (232Th) elemental concentrations as well as U-series isotope distributions in a Neanderthal tooth from the Middle Palaeolithic site of Payre using laser ablation ICP-MS. The U-concentrations in an enamel section varied between 1 and 1500 ppb. The U-concentration maps show that U-migration through the external enamel surface is minute, the bulk of the uranium having migrated internally via the dentine into the enamel. The uranium migration and uptake is critically dependent on the mineralogical structure of the enamel. Increased U-concentrations are observed along lineaments, some of which are associated with cracks, and others …

High Field Performance Of Nano-Diamond Doped Mgb2 Superconductor, Arpita Vajpayee, V P. Awana, H Kishan, Anant Narlikar, G L. Bhalla, Xiaolin Wang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The results from magnetotransport and magnetization of nanodiamond doped MgB2-nDx are reported. Superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is not affected significantly by x up to x =0.05 and latter decreases slightly for higher x>0.05. R(T) vs H measurements show higher Tc values under same applied magnetic fields for the nanodiamond added samples, resulting in higher estimated Hc2 values. From the magnetization measurements, it was found that irreversibility field value Hirr for the pristine sample is 7.5 T at 4 K and the same is increased to 13.5 T for 3 wt % …

Reef Development At High-Latitudes During Multiple Interglacial Cycles: New Evidence From Lord Howe Island, Southwestern Pacific, David Kennedy, Colin D. Woodroffe, J -X Zhao

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Reef development during past Interglacial periods, when sea level and sea surface temperatures were higher than today, provide unique insights into how reef systems may respond to projected human-induced global warming. Lord Howe Island currently represents the southernmost limit of reef development in the Pacific. Reef growth of Pleistocene age has been inferred to have occurred around the island, and this paper provides the fi rst detailed descriptions on the character of this development. Two phases of reef growth are identifi ed, which occurred as isolated fringing reefs along the edge of the basaltic hills of the island. Uranium-series dating …

Anisotropic Atomic Motions In High-Resolution Protein Crystallography Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Conrad J. Burden, Aaron J. Oakley

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using empirical force fields are popular for the study of proteins. In this work, we compare anisotropic atomic fluctuations in nanosecond-timescale MD simulations with those observed in an ultra-high-resolution crystal structure of crambin. In order to make our comparisons, we have developed a compact graphical technique for assessing agreement between spatial atomic distributions determined by MD simulations and observed anisotropic temperature factors.

Band Structures, Magnetic Properties, And Enhanced Magnetoresistance In The High Pressure Phase Of Gd And Y Doped Two-Dimensional Perovskite Sr2coo4 Compounds, Xiaolin Wang, E Takayama-Muromachi, S X. Dou, Zhenxiang Cheng

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The authors present their studies on the band structures and on the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of the high pressure phase of Sr2-xRExCoO4 [rare earth (RE)=Gd and Y, x=0.1-0.5] compounds which were synthesized by a high pressure and high temperature technique. The authors found that as x increases, the magnetoresistance {(PH-P0)/p0} increases up to -17% at 5 K and 7 T, which is 2.5 times higher than that for undoped Sr2CoO4, although the ferromagnetic transition drops from 255 to 200 K for the Gd doping with x=0.3. …

The developed method of high-pressure synthesis (HPS) allows producing nanostructural highly dense material based on MGB2, which possesses the highest superconducting and mechanical characteristics among the known world analogues, in the form of blocks that are suitable for application in SC electromotors and pumps. Additions of Zr can increase critical current density (jc) of synthesized at 2 GPa and 750-800 °C MGB2 in the same manner as additions of Ta or Ti, i.e. due to the absorption of impurity hydrogen forming the ZrH2. The formation of ZrB2 phase at higher synthesis …

Comparison Of Small-Field Behaviour In Mgb2, Low And High Temperature Superconductors, Alexey V. Pan, S X. Dou Jan 2006

Comparison Of Small-Field Behaviour In Mgb2, Low And High Temperature Superconductors, Alexey V. Pan, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Different types of superconductors have been investigated at small magnetic fields (Ba) over wide temperature (T) ranges at different Ba orientations. It has been shown that the temperature dependence of the characteristic field (B*), separating the Ba-independent critical current density (Jc) plateau (single vortex pinning regime) and the region with Jc(Ba) (collective pinning), can be attributed either to the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth for Nb-film and MgB2bulk superconductors, or to thermally activated processes for Bi-based superconductors and YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconducting …

Afm In Liquid: A High Sensitivity Study On Biological Membranes, Michael J. Higgins, Takeshi Fukuma, Suzi P. Jarvis

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Frequency Modulation AFM (FM-AFM) is commonly operated in ultra-high vacuum, though its inception in liquids for biological samples is relatively new. Here, we highlight the ability of FM-AFM to perform molecular resolution imaging of biomembrane surfaces and to detect individual layers of structured water at similar membrane interfaces. These studies highlight the potential of FM-AFM for studying model membranes and lipid raft systems on the molecular scale.

The Epididymal Soluble Prion Protein Forms A High-Molecular-Mass Complex In Association With Hydrophobic Proteins, Heath W. Ecroyd, Maya Belghazi, Jean-Louis Dacheux, Jean-Luc Gatti

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

We have shown previously that a 'soluble' form of PrP (prion protein), not associated with membranous vesicles, exists in the male reproductive fluid [Ecroyd, Sarradin, Dacheux and Gatti (2004) Biol. Reprod. 71, 993-1001]. Attempts to purify this 'soluble' PrP indicated that it behaves like a high-molecular-mass complex of more than 350 kDa and always co-purified with the same set of proteins. The main associated proteins were sequenced by MS and were found to match to clusterin (apolipoprotein J), BPI (bacterial permeability-increasing protein), carboxylesterase-like urinary excreted protein (cauxin), beta-mannosidase and beta-galactosidase. Immunoblotting and enzymatic assay confirmed the presence of clusterin and …

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Soil erosion in the Canterbury high country has been a concern for many years, and Environment Canterbury wishes to encourage land management practices that will preserve soil quality and vegetative cover. Environment Canterbury brought to MISG2005 a data set spanning three decades of bare ground monitoring in the Canterbury high country, along with data on factors with potential to impact on the processes of revegetation. These include topographic and climate data, soil nutrient status and land management factors. The study group analysed these data with the aim of determining whether trends in bare ground can be predicted from the potential …

Preliminary Design Of A High Tc Superconducting Persistent Mode Current Switch, Christopher J. Hawley, Dominic Cuiuri, Steve Gower Jan 2003

Preliminary Design Of A High Tc Superconducting Persistent Mode Current Switch, Christopher J. Hawley, Dominic Cuiuri, Steve Gower

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Persistent Mode Current Switches (PMCS) are made from coils of superconductor that in theory will provide zero conduction losses when closed. By causing a section of the superconductor to leave its superconducting state and become resistive, the switch is effectively opened. There are currently 3 methods to open a PMCS; 1) applying heat, 2) applying a magnetic field or 3) application of current above the critical current (Ic) of the tape. The first two methods are not suitable for power applications as the switching time is too slow. Recent work at the University of Wollongong and in literature has shown …

Modelling Of High Temperature Superconducting Wires And Coils, Christopher David Cook, T Hardono Jan 2002

Modelling Of High Temperature Superconducting Wires And Coils, Christopher David Cook, T Hardono

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper discusses modelling techniques for high temperature superconducting (HTSC) wires and coils. Models are developed based on the behaviour of Bi-2223/Ag wires and coils. For many power-engineering applications it is necessary to form HTSC wires into coils. PSpice models for HTSC coils will be presented in this paper. The aim is to develop models for HTSC wires and coils so that they can be treated as circuit elements in PSpice. The critical current of a coil will in general be different from the wire it is manufactured from and this change in current for a HTSC coil will be …

Characterisation Of High Temperature Superconducting Coils, Christopher David Cook, Sarath Perera, Thomas Hardjono Jan 2001

Characterisation Of High Temperature Superconducting Coils, Christopher David Cook, Sarath Perera, Thomas Hardjono

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Some power engineering systems, such as efficient energy storage for power quality improvement, can be potentially made more efficient if implemented with large coils made of high temperature superconductors (HTS). However, the losses of HTS coils carrying AC current limit their usage in practical applications. It has been shown previously that a thin pancake coil with relatively large diameter can be modelled as straight tapes arranged in a face-to-face stack. This paper reviews those results. In addition, measurements on a more realistic larger HTS coil were carried out. It is shown that the model assumptions provide less accurate results for …

Design Of A High Temperature Superconductor Magnetic Energy Storage Systems, R L Causley, Christopher David Cook, Steve Gower Jan 2001

Design Of A High Temperature Superconductor Magnetic Energy Storage Systems, R L Causley, Christopher David Cook, Steve Gower

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The University of Wollongong (UoW) has received funding for the research and development of a 20 kJ high temperature superconducting magnetic energy storage device (HTS SMES). This SMES will be operated at 25 K in contrast to most existing HTS designs, which operate at 77K. This paper includes a literature review of the current technology for the configuration of the SMES coil and a summary of the work done at UoW to date. Solenoidal and toroidal coils designs are compared to determine which will provide the required level of energy stored for a minimum superconductor and device volume. The design …

Behavioural Modelling Of High Temperature Superconducting Wires And Coils For Power Engineering Applications, Thomas Hardjono, Christopher David Cook, Sarath Perera Jan 2000

Behavioural Modelling Of High Temperature Superconducting Wires And Coils For Power Engineering Applications, Thomas Hardjono, Christopher David Cook, Sarath Perera

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Many aspects of the behaviour of high temperature superconducting (HTS) wires are well understood for dc applications. However, models of HTS suitable for use in circuit analysis by power engineers designing HTS applications are not readily available. This paper describes the initial development of suitable models for HTS wire. The V-I characteristics for wires carrying dc transport current can be empirically determined using a power law V=kIn. Experimentally measured V-I characteristics are fitted using the above power law. This enables the simulation of the behaviour of Bi-2223/Ag wire using the well-known circuit simulator PSpice. Other factors affecting the dc critical …

High Recovery Desalting Of Brackish Water By Electrodialysis: Field Tests At Yuma Desalting Test Facility & At La Verkin Springs, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation Dec 1984

High Recovery Desalting Of Brackish Water By Electrodialysis: Field Tests At Yuma Desalting Test Facility & At La Verkin Springs, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation

Water

An ED (electrodialysis pilot plant achieved high desalting recoveries of nearly 95 percent at the YDTF (Yuma Desalting Test Facility, Arizona) and 92 percent at LVS (La Verkin Springs, Utah) during over 4000 hours of operation. Brine TDS (total dissolved solids) concentrations of nearly 100 000 g/m3 were obtained at LVS, which is a greater brine concentration than is possible using RO (reverse osmosis). The LVS required ED energy (while producing a product TDS concentration of about 1000 g/m3) is estimated to be about one-third the energy requirements of a commercially available distillation brine concentrator. Lowering product …

Why Windspeeds Increase On High Mountain Slopes At Night, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1981

Why Windspeeds Increase On High Mountain Slopes At Night, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

The purpose of this report is to explain the windspeed increase on mountain slopes at night. Additional work is required to determine such things as the frequency of the winds, the area affected, seasonal variation, and the effect on fire behavior. Also, additional studies are needed to develop the type of procedures required to forecast these nocturnal mountain winds.
