Software Tools For Large Scale Interactive Hydrodynamic Modeling, Gennadii Donchyts, Fedor Baart, Arthur Van Dam, Bert Jagers, Sander Van Der Pijl

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Running hydrodynamic models interactively allows both visual exploration and change of model state during simulation. One of the main characteristics of an interactive model is that it should provide immediate feedback to the user, for example respond to changes in model state or view settings. For this reason, such features are usually only available for models with a relatively small number of computational cells, which are used mainly for demonstration and educational purposes. It would be useful if interactive modeling would also work for models typically used in consultancy projects involving large scale simulations. This results in a number of …

Modeling Of District Metered Areas With Relatively High Leakage Rate. The Case Study Of Kalipoli’S Dma, Antonios Bakogiannis, Athanasios Tzamtzis

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The article reviews the modelling of District Metered Areas (DMAs) with relatively high leakage rate. As a generally recognised approach in modelling of leakage does not exist, modelling of leakage by enginners and other researchers usually takes place by dividing the whole leakage rate evenly to all available nodes of the model. In this article, a new methodology is proposed to determine the nodal leakage by using a hydraulic model. The proposed methodology takes into consideration the IWA water balance methodology, the Minimum Night Flow (MNF) analysis, the number of connections related to each node and the marerial of pipes. …

The cloud application has five web services for: (1) spatial data infrastructure – 1 (SDI), (2) SDI – 2, (3) …

Stochastic And Deterministic Parameter Estimation Of Coupled Bacteria-Sediment Fate And Transport In Streams, Tri Le, Arash Massoudieh Aug 2014

Stochastic And Deterministic Parameter Estimation Of Coupled Bacteria-Sediment Fate And Transport In Streams, Tri Le, Arash Massoudieh

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

E. Coli is widely used as an indicator organism to assess the risk of pathogenic bacteria in water bodies. Due to their strong association with suspended and bed sediments, the fate and transport of micro-organisms in water bodies is strongly controlled by sediment dynamics. It has been shown that bed sediments can contain orders of magnitude larger pathogen concentration than the water column and these sediment-associated bacteria can be released into the water column as a result of high flow velocities that cause sediment resuspension. In this presentation parameter estimation of a mechanistic model of bacteria-sediment interaction using a deterministic …

Hybrid Control-Oriented Modeling Of Combined Sewer Networks: Barcelona Case Study, Bernat Joseph-Duran, Carlos Ocampo-Martinez, Gabriela Cembrano

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

A hybrid linear model for real-time optimization-based control of a combined sewer network has been developed to be used for the minimization of pollution during storm events. The model takes into account delays and attenuation in sewers together with piecewise linear approximations for flow over weirs, overflows in junctions and flow re-entering the network after overflows. Using the proposed model, an Optimal Control Problem (OCP) is formulated, which can be efficiently solved by means of a mixed integer linear or quadratic programming problem. The performance of a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy solving consecutive OCPs is assessed by means of …

The Benthic Geoecology Model Within The Modular System For Shelves And Coasts (Mossco), Mohammad Hassan Nasermoaddeli, Carsten Lemmen, Richard Hofmeister, Frank Koesters, Knut Klingbeil

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The Modular System for Shelves and Coasts (MOSSCO) integrates physical, biological, chemical and geological models of shelves and coasts for the North Sea and Baltic Sea in an exchangeable way. The MOSSCO software forms a coupling framework for exchanging data and models, which distinguishes between physical domains (Earth System compartments such as the benthic and pelagic zone) and processes (such as benthic geochemistry, physical erosion and biological stabilization). Information exchange across physical domains with different grids and time steps are managed using the ESMF (Earth System Modelling Framework), whereas coupling of processes within individual modules is achieved using FABM (Framework …

Dynamic Condition Approach To Study The Self-Purification Capacity Of Colombian Water Bodies Case: Cauca River And Salvajina Dam, Alberto Galvis, Isabel Cristina Hurtado, Carlos Martínez-Cano, Juan Gabriel Urrego

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The impact on water resources caused by municipal wastewater discharge has become a critical and ever-growing environmental and public health problem. In order to be able to efficiently address this problem, it is important to adopt an integrated approach that includes a decrease in and control of contamination at its source. These principles have been successfully applied in the industrial sector and now these concepts are also being applied to integrated water resources management. In this context the conceptual model of the Three Steps Strategic Approach (3-SSA) was developed, consisting of: 1) minimization and prevention, 2) treatment for reuse and …

Towards A Decision Support System For Flood Management In A River Basin, Luis Vieira, Jose Pinho, Dirk Schwanenberg

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The world is experiencing a countless number of impressive and devastating floods causing a range of health impacts and risks with hundreds of thousands of people losing their lives or becoming homeless in a matter of hours. EU Floods Directive requires the developing of flood hazard maps, which may include information on hydrological and hydrodynamics characteristics of vulnerable regions, i.e. inundated areas and river flow discharges. Prediction of flood events can accurately be achieved by applying mathematical modelling for describing rainfall-runoff phenomena as well as surface waters hydrodynamics. Moreover, reservoirs can be properly operated in order to minimize flood events …

Overcoming Hurdles In Real Time Modeling, Thomas Walski Aug 2014

Overcoming Hurdles In Real Time Modeling, Thomas Walski

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Real time modeling and control sounds easy. Get data from the SCADA system, run the appropriate model and push the results back to the controls. What could be difficult about that? Plenty. Anyone attempting to do this work probably has run into some of the institutional, technical and personal hurdles in actually making this sort of system work. This paper will discuss the hurdles and ways to deal with them. The most daunting hurdle is that of security. Most modeling happens on computers connected to the internet. Water utility managers are justifiably terrified of all the bad things that lurk …

Development Of Real-Time Drinking Water Distribution Systems (Dwds) Modeling Technology Using The Epanet Extended Period Simulation (Eps) Modeling Toolkit, Sudhir Kshirsagar, Walter Grayman, Ben Chenevey, Aditi Shetti, Saurabh Gupta, Benjamin Bedinghaus, Steve Mylroie

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Real-time hydraulic and water quality modeling involves the modification of the EPS network model every few minutes to reflect the SCADA data, and this paper shares how this type of real-time modeling framework, HydroTrek, was built on top of the EPS foundation provided by the EPANET toolkit. The real-life applications of HydroTrek posed some interesting modeling challenges when the hydraulic time-step was reduced to match the SCADA time-step of one to five minutes. For example, a physical pump usually does not instantaneously, but a model pump does. In a sensitive network, that can mean a significant mismatch between the SCADA …

On The Modeling And Real-Time Control Of Urban Drainage Systems: A Survey, Luis Antonio Garcia Gutierrez, Eduardo Escobar, Duvan Téllez, Julian Barreiro Gómez, Nicanor Quijano Silva, Carlos Ocampo-Martinez

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Drainage network are complex systems composed by several processes including recollection, transport, storing, wastewater and/or rain treatment, and return of the water to a receiving environment. Urban drainage systems (UDS) involve most of these processes inside cities and can be either separate or combined systems, depending on how wastewater and rainwater are managed. The way UDS manage the wastewater is through the convenient handling of active elements such as gates (redirection and/or retention), storing tanks and pumping stations, when needed. Therefore, the modeling and control of UDS basically consists in knowing and representing the (dynamical) behavior of those elements and …

Vadose Zone Lag Time And Potential 21st Century Climate Change Effects On Spatially Distributed Groundwater Recharge In The Semi-Arid Nebraska Sand Hills, N. R. Rossman, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Clinton Rowe, Jozsef Szilagyi

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Deep drainage of water below plant root zones (potential groundwater recharge) will become groundwater recharge (GR) after a delay (or lag time) in which soil moisture traverses the vadose zone before reaching the water table. Depending on the thickness of the vadose zone, the magnitude of deep drainage, and soil hydraulic properties, lag times will vary broadly, exceeding decades to centuries in semi-arid and arid environments. Yet, studies of future climate change impacts to GR have typically avoided focusing on impacts beyond 100 years and often neglect to consider lag effects caused by the vadose zone. We investigate the effects …

Sustained High Basal Motion Of The Greenland Ice Sheet Revealed By Borehole Deformation, Claudia Ryser, Martin P. Lüthi, Lauren C. Andrews, Matthew J. Hoffman, Ginny A. Catania, Robert L. Hawley

Dartmouth Scholarship

Ice deformation and basal motion characterize the dynamical behavior of the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS). We evaluate the contribution of basal motion from ice deformation measurements in boreholes drilled to the bed at two sites in the western marginal zone of the GrIS. We find a sustained high amount of basal motion contribution to surface velocity of 44–73% in winter, and up to 90% in summer. Measured ice deformation rates show an unexpected variation with depth that can be explained with the help of an ice-flow model as a consequence of stress transfer from slippery to sticky areas. This effect …

The Earth’s Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Electrodynamics (I-T-E) system varies markedly on a range of spatial and temporal scales and these variations have adverse effects on human operations and systems, including high-frequency communications, over-the-horizon radars, and survey and navigation systems that use Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. Consequently, there is a need to elucidate the underlying physical pro- cesses that lead to space weather disturbances and to both mitigate and forecast near-Earth space weather.

Simulation Of Meteorological Fields For Icing Applications At The Summit Of Mount Washington, Sandra L. Jones

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Hazards related to in-cloud icing on aircraft and ground structures are important considerations for structural design, risk mitigation and operations. A variety of robust ice accretion algorithms exist for application dependent purposes; however, these algorithms are often dependent on reliable meteorological input data to be of use. This study investigates the potential for predicting meteorological parameters relevant to in-cloud icing episodes at ground level using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Model performance with regards to explicit simulation of super-cooled cloud liquid water content, cloud droplet diameter, temperature, and wind speed is evaluated against measurements collected at the summit …

Numerical Algorithms For Solving A Generalized Cancer Chemotherapy Problem, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin Jan 2014

Numerical Algorithms For Solving A Generalized Cancer Chemotherapy Problem, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin

Math and Computer Science Faculty Working Papers

In this paper, two elaborate numerical algorithms are presented for solving the Nani- Oguztoreli functional differential equations associated with cell-cycle specific cancer chemotherapy. The generalized cell-cycle specific cancer chemotherapy model of Nani- Oguztoreli contains discrete time delays which represent the times that the cancer cells spend in each cell-cycle phase. The model also takes into account that inter-cell cycle phase transition rate constants, recruitment of resting cells from the GO phase, and effect of chemotherapy drug on cells in each phase. The algorithms utilize a modified version of the Method of Steps algorithms. The constructed numerical schemes can be implemented …

Modeling Transport Properties Of Inhomogeneous Superconductor-Metal Composites, A Borroto, L Del Rio, M Arronte, Tom Johansen, E Altshuler Jan 2014

Modeling Transport Properties Of Inhomogeneous Superconductor-Metal Composites, A Borroto, L Del Rio, M Arronte, Tom Johansen, E Altshuler

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We propose a model for a superconductor-metal composite that allows to derive intrinsic transport properties of the superconducting phase based on 2D images of its cross section, and a minimal set of parameters. The method is tested experimentally by using, as model composite, a "transversal bridge" made on a Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x (BSCCO)-Ag multi-filamentary tape. It is shown that the approach allows to predict the measured I−⟨E⟩ curves of the filaments. In addition, one can determine the critical current anisotropy between the longitudinal and transverse directions of the Ag-BSCCO tape, and also of …

Engineering Collaborations In Medical Modeling And Simulation, Frederic D. Mckenzie, Salim Chemlal, Tom Hubbard, Robert E. Kelly, Roderick C. Borgie, David A. Besachio, Michel Audette

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Fifty years ago computer science was just beginning to see common acceptance as a growing discipline and very few universities had a computer science department although other departments were utilizing computers and software to enhance their methodologies. We believe modeling and simulation (M&S) is on a similar path. Many other disciplines utilize M&S to enhance their methodologies but we also believe that M&S fundamentals can be essential in making better decisions by utilizing the appropriate model for the problem at hand, expanding the solution space through simulation, and understanding it through visualization and proper analyses. After our students learn these …

Measuring Security: A Challenge For The Generation, Janusz Zalewski, Steven Drager, William Mckeever, Andrew J. Kornecki Jan 2014

Measuring Security: A Challenge For The Generation, Janusz Zalewski, Steven Drager, William Mckeever, Andrew J. Kornecki

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Daytona Beach

This paper presents an approach to measuring computer security understood as a system property, in the category of similar properties, such as safety, reliability, dependability, resilience, etc. First, a historical discussion of measurements is presented, beginning with views of Hermann von Helmholtz in his 19th century work “Zählen und Messen”. Then, contemporary approaches related to the principles of measuring software properties are discussed, with emphasis on statistical, physical and software models. A distinction between metrics and measures is made to clarify the concepts. A brief overview of inadequacies of methods and techniques to evaluate computer security is presented, followed by …

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Many studies have modeled the Tohoku tsunami of March 11, 2011 as being due entirely to slip on an earthquake fault, but the following discrepancies suggest that further research is warranted. (1) Published models of tsunami propagation and coastal impact underpredict the observed runup heights of up to 40. m measured along the coast of the Sanriku district in the northeast part of Honshu Island. (2) Published models cannot reproduce the timing and high-frequency content of tsunami waves recorded at three nearshore buoys off Sanriku, nor the timing and dispersion properties of the waveforms at offshore DART buoy #21418. (3) …
