Applications And Algorithms For Least Trimmed Sum Of Absolute Deviations Regression, Douglas M. Hawkins, David Olive Dec 1999

Applications And Algorithms For Least Trimmed Sum Of Absolute Deviations Regression, Douglas M. Hawkins, David Olive

Articles and Preprints

High breakdown estimation (HBE) addresses the problem of getting reliable parameter estimates in the face of outliers that may be numerous and badly placed. In multiple regression, the standard HBE's have been those defined by the least median of squares (LMS) and the least trimmed squares (LTS) criteria. Both criteria lead to a partitioning of the data set's n cases into two “halves” – the covered “half” of cases are accommodated by the fit, while the uncovered “half”, which is intended to include any outliers, are ignored. In LMS, the criterion is the Chebyshev norm of the residuals of the …

A Hierarchy Of Maps Between Compacta, Paul Bankston Dec 1999

A Hierarchy Of Maps Between Compacta, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Let CH be the class of compacta (i.e., compact Hausdorff spaces), with BS the subclass of Boolean spaces. For each ordinal α and pair $\langle K,L\rangle$ of subclasses of CH, we define Lev≥α K,L), the class of maps of level at least α from spaces in K to spaces in L, in such a way that, for finite α, Lev≥α (BS,BS) consists of the Stone duals of Boolean lattice embeddings that preserve all prenex first-order formulas of quantifier rank α. Maps of level ≥ 0 are just the continuous surjections, and the maps of level ≥ 1 are …

Oxygen Pressure-Tuned Epitaxy And Optoelectronic Properties Of Laser-Deposited Zno Films On Sapphire, S. Choopun, R. D. Vispute, W. Noch, A. Balsamo, R. P. Sharma, T. Venkatesan, A. Iliadis, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

Influence of oxygen pressure on the epitaxy, surface morphology, and optoelectronic properties has been studied in the case of ZnO thin films grown on sapphire ~0001! by pulsed-laser deposition. Results of Rutherford backscattering and ion channeling in conjunction with atomic force microscopy clearly indicate that the growth mode, degree of epitaxy, and the defect density strongly depend on the oxygen background pressure during growth. It is also found that the growth mode and the defects strongly influence the electron mobility, free-electron concentration, and the luminescence properties of the ZnO films. By tuning the oxygen pressure during the initial and the …

Thermal Degradation Of Blends Of Polystyrene And Poly(Sodium 4-Styrenesulfonate) And The Copolymer, Poly(Styrene-Co-Sodium 4-Styrenesulfonate), Qiang Yao, Charles Wilkie Dec 1999

Thermal Degradation Of Blends Of Polystyrene And Poly(Sodium 4-Styrenesulfonate) And The Copolymer, Poly(Styrene-Co-Sodium 4-Styrenesulfonate), Qiang Yao, Charles Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The thermal degradation of blends and copolymers of styrene with styrenesulfonic acid has been studied using thermogravimetric analysis, TGA/FTIR, and cone calorimetry. The blends have enhanced thermal stability relative to virgin polystyrene but there is no enhancement in thermal stability for the copolymers. Apparently, it is necessary to have adjacent sulfonic acid groups in order to permit the formation of a graphite-like char which can provide thermal protection to the polymer. It is necessary to have a good match in degradation temperatures of the two components if one is to have significantly enhanced thermal stability.

Tga/Ftir: An Extremely Useful Technique For Studying Polymer Degradation, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Thermogravimetric analysis coupled to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, TGA/FTIR, has been used to probe the degradation of several polymeric systems. These include poly(methyl methacrylate) in the presence of various additives, graft copolymers of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene and styrene-butadiene with sodium methacrylate and styrene with acrylonitrile, blends of styrene-butadiene block copolymers with poly(vinylphosphonic acid) and poly(vinylsulfonic acid), and cross-linked polystyrenes. Additives may interact with poly(methyl methacrylate) by coordination to the carbonyl oxygen to a Lewis acid and the subsequent transfer of an electron from the polymer chain to the metal atom or by the formation of a radical which can trap the degrading …

Comparison Of One-Dimensional And Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Modeling Approaches For Red River Basin, Sajjad Ahmad, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A devastating flood in Red River valley in 1997 emphasized the need to study the flood control measures in the Red River basin using state of the art modeling tools. The Red River and its floodplains can be modeled using one-dimensional, quasi two-dimensional or fully two-dimensional hydrodynamic models. Each modeling approach has its own advantages and limitations. The main purpose of this report is a comparison between one-dimensional (or quasi two dimensional) and fully two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling approaches for modeling floods in the Red River basin.

A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model, MIKE 21, coupled with Geographic Information System (GIS) …

Initial State Dependence Of Low-Energy Electron Emission In Fast Ion Atom Collisions, Robert Moshammer, Pablo Daniel Fainstein, Michael Schulz, Wayne M. Schmitt, Holger Kollmus, Rido Mann, Siegbert Hagmann, Joachim Hermann Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single and multiple ionization of neon and argon atoms by 3.6 MeV/u Au53+ impact has been explored in kinematically complete experiments. Doubly differential cross sections for low-energy electron emission have been obtained for a defined charge state of the recoiling target ion and the receding projectile. Observed target specific structures in the electron continuum are attributable to the nodal structure of the initial bound state momentum distribution. The experimental data are in excellent accord with continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial-state single ionization calculations if multiple ionization is considered appropriately.

Disclosure Detection In Multivariate Categorical Databases: Auditing Confidentiality Protection Through Two New Matrix Operators, Sumit Dutta Chowdhury, George T. Duncan, Ramayya Krishnan, Stephen F. Roehrig, Sumitra Mukherjee

CCE Faculty Articles

As databases grow more prevalent and comprehensive, database administrators seek to limit disclosure of confidential information while still providing access to data. Practical databases accommodate users with heterogeneous needs for access. Each class of data user is accorded access to only certain views. Other views are considered confidential, and hence to be protected. Using illustrations from health care and education, this article addresses inferential disclosure of confidential views in multidimensional categorical databases. It demonstrates that any structural, so data-value-independent method for detecting disclosure can fail. Consistent with previous work for two-way tables, it presents a data-value-dependent method to obtain tight …

Measurement Of The B0B̅0 Oscillation Frequency Using L-D*+ Pairs And Lepton Flavor Tags, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

The oscillation frequency Δmd of B00 mixing is measured using the partially reconstructed semileptonic decay 0l- ν̅ D*+X. The data sample was collected with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider during 1992–1995 by triggering on the existence of two lepton candidates in an event, and corresponds to about 110 pb-1 of p̅p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. We estimate the proper decay time of the 0 meson from the measured decay length and reconstructed momentum of the l-D*+ system. The charge of …

Molecular-Dynamics Study Of Phase Transitions In Alkali Azides, M. M. Ossowski, John R. Hardy, R. W. Smith Dec 1999

Molecular-Dynamics Study Of Phase Transitions In Alkali Azides, M. M. Ossowski, John R. Hardy, R. W. Smith

John R. Hardy Papers

An account is presented of our studies of the order-disorder phase transitions in KN3, RbN3, and CsN3. These are based on parameter-free interionic potentials based on the Gordon-Kim modified electron-gas formalism extended to molecular ions. We performed static structural relaxations and supercell molecular dynamics and predicted with reasonable accuracy the temperatures for the onset of the transitions. In particular, we address the question of how the N3- ions reorient to yield the transitions. We found the existence of NaCl-type high-temperature phases in disordered KN3 and RbN3 and argue that this …

Characterisation Of The Effects Of Time And Pressure On A Group Of Electronic Voltage Standards, James Kevin Armstrong Dec 1999

Characterisation Of The Effects Of Time And Pressure On A Group Of Electronic Voltage Standards, James Kevin Armstrong

Masters

Although primary metrology laboratories use standards based on the Josephson effect to maintain a local reference standard for dc voltage, artefact standards are still the standard of choice in many secondary laboratories. The National Metrology Laboratory, Dublin maintains a local reference standard for dc voltage by means of an ensemble of Zener-diode based electronic voltage standard units. Electronic voltage standards have a number of shortcomings over Josephson standards for use as a local reference standard. In particular their output voltages are influenced by several external factors. In order to make optimum use of the NML reference standard it is important …

Wildlife-Caused Losses For Producers Of Channel Catfish Ictalurus Punctatus In 1996, Alice P. Wywialowski Dec 1999

Wildlife-Caused Losses For Producers Of Channel Catfish Ictalurus Punctatus In 1996, Alice P. Wywialowski

USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The National Agricultural Statistics Service surveyed by telephone and mail in January and February 1997 all known producers of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus to acquire current information about wildlife-caused losses in calendar year 1996. Many producers tried to prevent wildlife-caused losses of their catfish by shooting (57%), vehicle patrol (55%), or frightening (36%), at an estimated cost of >$5 million. Yet, 69% of catfish produces cited some wildlife-caused losses. Birds were most frequently cited as a cause of losses, and double-crested cormorants Phalacrocorax auritus was the species cited most frequently (53%). The next most frequently cited bids were herons Ardea …

Detailed Dynamics Of Electron Beams Self-Trapped And Accelerated In A Self-Modulated Laser Wakefield, Shouyuan Chen, M. Krishnan, Anatoly Maksimchuk, R. Wagner, Donald P. Umstadter Dec 1999

Detailed Dynamics Of Electron Beams Self-Trapped And Accelerated In A Self-Modulated Laser Wakefield, Shouyuan Chen, M. Krishnan, Anatoly Maksimchuk, R. Wagner, Donald P. Umstadter

Donald Umstadter Publications

The electron beam generated in a self-modulated laser-wakefield accelerator is characterized in detail. A transverse normalized emittance of 0.06 π mm mrad, the lowest ever for an electron injector, was measured for 2 MeV electrons. The electron beam was observed to have a multicomponent beam profile and energy distribution. The latter also undergoes discrete transitions as the laser power or plasma density is varied. In addition, dark spots that form regular modes were observed in the electron beam profile. These features are explained by analysis and test particle simulations of electron dynamics during acceleration in a three-dimensional plasma wakefield.

On-Line Bayesian Tree-Structured Transformation Of Hidden Markov Models For Speaker Adaptation, Shaojun Wang, Yunxin Zhao Dec 1999

On-Line Bayesian Tree-Structured Transformation Of Hidden Markov Models For Speaker Adaptation, Shaojun Wang, Yunxin Zhao

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper presents a new recursive Bayesian learning approach for transformation parameter estimation in speaker adaptation. Our goal is to incrementally transform (or adapt) the entire set of HMM parameters for a new speaker or new acoustic enviroment from a small amount of adaptation data. By establishing a clustering tree of HMM Gaussian mixture components, the finest affine transformation parameters for individual HMM Gaussian mixture components can be dynamically searched. The on-line Bayesian learning technique proposed in our recent work is used for recursive maximum a posteriori estimation of affine transformation parameters. Speaker adaptation experiments using a 26-letter English alphabet …

Optimal Power Allocation In Cdma Forward Link Using Dependency Between Pilot And Traffic Channels, Seung Jong Park, Dongwoo Kim, Chang Yeon Kim Dec 1999

Optimal Power Allocation In Cdma Forward Link Using Dependency Between Pilot And Traffic Channels, Seung Jong Park, Dongwoo Kim, Chang Yeon Kim

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper shows a new method for minimizing the transmit power on CDMA forward link channels. Different from previous works, the proposed method uses the dependency that exists between the respective signal qualities of the pilot channel and traffic channels. Since present CDMA forward link exploits coherent demodulation with continuously transmitting pilot signals, the stronger the pilot channel is, the less traffic power may be required while the same transmission quality is maintained. With laboratory tests, the dependency is graphed. And then an optimal pilot signal quality is found, which minimizes the total transmit power. Considering various mobile environments, -10 …

Photodetachment Of He- In The Vicinity Of The He* (N=3, 4, And 5) Thresholds, Chien-Nan Liu, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

A comprehensive eigenchannel R-matrix study of photodetachment of He-(1 s2s2p 4P0 (1 ) is presented for the energy region of the Hesnl3l) thresholds, where 3<~n<~5. Over this energy region we present all partial cross sections which have been measured experimentally, including theoretical predictions (1 for the Hes3p 3P ( ) partial cross section, as well as energies and widths for all resonances, and identifications of all major ones. Near the Hen=3) thresholds, we predict two 4De resonances that to our knowledge have previously been neither predicted nor observed, and present results showing their effects on partial cross sections and photoelectron angular distributions; …

A Comparison Of Training Algorithms For Dhp Adaptive Critic Neuro-Control, George G. Lendaris, Thaddeus T. Shannon, Andres Rustan Dec 1999

A Comparison Of Training Algorithms For Dhp Adaptive Critic Neuro-Control, George G. Lendaris, Thaddeus T. Shannon, Andres Rustan

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

A variety of alternate training strategies for implementing the Dual Heuristic Programming (DHP) method of approximate dynamic programming in the neuro-control context are explored. The DHP method of controller training has been successfully demonstrated by a number of authors on a variety of control problems in recent years, but no unified view of the implementation details of the method has yet emerged. A number of options are here described for sequencing the training of the Controller and Critic networks in DHP implementations. Results are given about their relative efficiency and the quality of the resulting controllers for two benchmark control …

A Study Of The Thermal Properties Of Peti-5/Im7, Yan Tang Dec 1999

A Study Of The Thermal Properties Of Peti-5/Im7, Yan Tang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

PETI-5 (Phenylethynyl-terminated polyimide) is a substance that shows a great deal of potential in the high-speed aircraft and the aerospace industry. PETI-5 has been used for the High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT), a supersonic passenger aircraft in development at NASA. In this project, four staging samples, one fresh sample, one fully cured sample and one partially cured sample were analyzed and compared using thermal analytical techniques. The sample staged at 450°F with full vacuum showed the highest thermal properties among four staging samples. The results indicated that vacuum is helpful in improving the thermal stability of PETI-5. The mechanism of …
