Spectroscopy of HD 161570 shows it to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 45.623 days and a nearly circular orbit. The primary star has spectral type G7 III, and the secondary is most likely a G or K dwarf. A high-resolution spectrum of the 3950 Å region confirms that the primary has Ca II H and K emission lines. The logarithm of the giant's lithium abundance is less than 0.9, indicating that it is not lithium-rich. From photometric observations covering six seasons, we detected periodic short-term light variability with an amplitude ranging from 0.02 to 0.04 mag. …

Orbital elements have been determined for 10 chromospherically active binaries from a combination of new velocities and velocities in the literature. First orbits for three binaries, HD 33363, HD 152178, and HD 208472, are presented, as well as updated orbits for seven other binaries. Two of the latter systems, LN Peg and HD 106225 were discovered to be triple, and both short- and long-period orbits have been computed for each. Fundamental properties have been determined for the chromopherically active primary in each system.

We have determined the visual orbit for the spectroscopic binary ι Pegasi with interferometric visibility data obtained by the Palomar Testbed Interferometer in 1997. ι Peg is a double-lined binary system whose minimum masses and spectral typing suggests the possibility of eclipses. Our orbital and component diameter determinations do not favor the eclipse hypothesis: the limb-to-limb separation of the two components is 0.151±0.069 mas at conjunction. Our conclusion that the ι Peg system does not eclipse is supported by high-precision photometric observations. We have obtained new radial velocities of the double-lined spectroscopic binary star 12 Persei, whose period is 331 days, and which has been resolved in recent years by speckle interferometry. We derive a solution for the orbital elements from the speckle and radial velocity data simultaneously, and find from that solution masses of 1.306 ± 0.035 and 1.172 ± 0.030 M☉ for the components, and an orbital parallax of 0farcs04224 ± 0farcs00056. We also determine spectroscopically the difference in magnitude between the components and, hence, their absolute magnitudes. New spectroscopic observations of the double-lined chromospherically active binary 54 Camelopardalis (=AE Lyncis) have been obtained, resulting in improved orbital elements and the determination of the fundamental properties of the system. 54 Cam has a period of 11.06794 days, an eccentricity of 0.125, and a mass ratio of 0.9945. The spectral types are F8 IV-V and G5 IV, positioning the components on opposite sides of the Hertzsprung gap. From a comparison with theoretical evolutionary tracks, the masses are estimated to be 1.60 and 1.59 M_⊙ for the G and F stars, respectively, while the radii are 3.7 and 3.2 R_⊙. …

New spectroscopic observations of the chromospherically active binary, 42 Capricorni, have resulted in the detection of lines of the secondary, improved orbital elements, and the determination of fundamental properties of the components. 42 Cap has an orbital period of 13.174004 d, an eccentricity of 0.176, and a mass ratio A/B of 1.375. No evidence for a variation of the center-of-mass velocity, suggested by earlier investigators, has been found. Spectral types of the primary and secondary are G1 IV and G2 V, respectively. HD 30957 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 44.395 days and a modest eccentricity of 0.09. The spectral types of the components are K2-3 V and K5 V. The measured v sin i for both components is less than or equal to 3 km/s and the orbital inclination is estimated to be 69 deg. The system is relatively nearby with a parallax of 0.025 sec or a distance of 40 pc. Space motions of the system indicate that it does not belong to any of the known moving groups. HR 6469 consists of an evolved G star and a close pair of stars, believed to be on the main sequence, the brighter of which is an early F star. Shallow eclipses have been detected in the close pair and the components of the wide system have been resolved over most of the orbit by speckle interferometry (McAlister & Hartkopf, Second Catalog of Interferometric Observations of Binary Stars, Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy, Contribution No. 2 (CHARA), 1988). We have determined spectroscopic orbits for three chromsopherically active giants that have hot compact companions. They are HD 160538 (KO III + wd, P = 904 days), HD 165141 (G8 III + wd, P approximately 5200 days), and HD 185510 (KO III + sdB, P = 20.6619 days). By fitting an IUE spectrum with theoretical models, we find the white dwarf companion of HD 165141 has a temperature of about 35,000 K. We have used contemporaneous spectra and V light curves to form spot models for RS CVn in 1991 and 1992. More than two spots are needed to fit all the properties of the observations. In fact, moderately small spots (22 x 28 deg in latitude and longitude) having only a slight effect on the rotational light curve were eclipsed in both years, and we find that a collection of 6-8 such moderate spots is required to fit the line profiles in each year. The system HD 212280 is a chromospherically active double lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 45.284 days and an eccentricity of 0.50. The spectrum is composite with spectral types of G8 IV and F5-8 V for the components. An estimated inclination of 78 +/- 8 deg results in masses of 1.7 and 1.4 solar mass for the G subgiant and mid-F star, respectively. The distance to the system is estimated to be 112 pc. New 1988-1990 photometry in V and B with a 16 inch automatic telescope shows that both HD 191262, a previously known chromospherically active binary, and its comparison star HD 191011 are variable, with starspots judged to be the mechanism in both. In HD 191262 and 191011, respectively, spot rotation periods of 5d.4 < P < 5d.7 and 1 7d.4 < P < 23d.0 were found and differential rotation coefficients of k=0.054 and 0.28 were estimated. HD 191011, shown to be a KS giant about 475 parsecs away, had eight different spots present during the 2.5 years of observation.

Eta Virginis is a bright (V = 3.89) triple system of composite spectral type A2 IV that has been observed for over a dozen years with both spectroscopy and speckle interferometry. Analysis of the speckle observations results in a long period of 13.1 yr. This period is also detected in residuals from the spectroscopic observations of the 71.7919 day short-period orbit. Elements of the long-period orbit were determined separately using the observations of both techniques. The detection and nature of a 'speckle astrometric' system are reported with attention given to alternative interpretations of the system components. The HR 226 = ADS 784 system is described as a short-period binary (with a period of 4.241148 +/- 0.000008 d) orbiting an unseen companion (with a period of 1769 +/- 10 d), and the triple's visual orbit is 83.10 +/- 0.20 yr. The elements of the various orbits taken from spectroscopic data are employed to develop the model scenarios.
