A Symbolic Approach To Nonlinear Time Series Analysis, Ranjan Karki, Nibhrat Lohia, Michael B. Schulte May 2024

A Symbolic Approach To Nonlinear Time Series Analysis, Ranjan Karki, Nibhrat Lohia, Michael B. Schulte

SMU Data Science Review

Current nonlinear time series methods such as neural networks forecast well. However, they act as a black box and are difficult to interpret, leaving the researchers and the audience with little insight into why the forecasts are the way they are. There is a need for a method that forecasts accurately while also being easy to interpret. This paper aims to develop a method to build an interpretable model for univariate and multivariate nonlinear time series data using wavelets and symbolic regression. The final method relies on multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks as a form of dimensionality reduction and the …

Underground Coal Gasification Field Tests In China: History And Prospects, Qin Yong, Yi Tongsheng, Yang Lei, Zhou Yongfeng, Wang Jun, Wang Lingxia

Coal Geology & Exploration

To achieve peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality in China, a low-carbon and efficient coal energy structure is essential for the sustainable energy development of China. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is an important strategy for transforming the coal energy structure in China. Based on the review of previous literature, this study analyzes the exploration history of the UCG field tests in China and delivers the prospects of UCG industrialization in China. The analytical results show that the development and field tests of UCG technologies in China have experienced five stages, namely the initial attempt, silence/recovery, extensive explorations, making technological …

Distribution Characteristics And Paleo-Climatic Significance Of Continental Climate-Sensitive Sediments In The Late Cretaceous In China, Bin Xu, Fang Xiang, Shuxia Li Oct 2021

Distribution Characteristics And Paleo-Climatic Significance Of Continental Climate-Sensitive Sediments In The Late Cretaceous In China, Bin Xu, Fang Xiang, Shuxia Li

Coal Geology & Exploration

The Cretaceous is a typical period for studying the greenhouse climate and the earth system interactions, and the world's most extensive terrestrial strata are mainly in East Asia, especially in China. Continental sediments can effectively reflect the paleo-climate change, but the previous studies of the Late Cretaceous paleo-climate, based on the combined characteristics of continental climate-sensitive sediments, were barely found in China. To obtain the Late Cretaceous paleo-climate characteristics of China, the distribution characteristics of different continental climate-sensitive sediment types in the early, middle and Late Cretaceous in China were studied in detail. According to the distribution and combination characteristics …

The Illegal Wildlife Trade: Through The Eyes Of A One-Year-Old Pangolin (Manis Javanica), Lelia Bridgeland-Stephens Jan 2020

The Illegal Wildlife Trade: Through The Eyes Of A One-Year-Old Pangolin (Manis Javanica), Lelia Bridgeland-Stephens

Animal Studies Journal

This paper explores the literature on the illegal wildlife trade (IWT) by following the journey of a single imagined Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) through the entire trading process. Literature on IWT frequently refers to non-human animals in terms of collectives, species, or body parts, for example ‘tons of pangolin scales’, rather than as subjective individuals. In contrast, this paper centralizes the experiences of an individual pangolin by using a cross- disciplinary methodology, combining fact with a fictional narrative of subjective pangolin experience, in an empathetic and egomorphic process. The paper draws together known legislation, trade practices, and pangolin biology, structured …

Advances On Geological-Geochemical Research Of Coal-Type Uranium In China, Zhou Xianqing, Qin Yong, Lu Lu Aug 2019

Advances On Geological-Geochemical Research Of Coal-Type Uranium In China, Zhou Xianqing, Qin Yong, Lu Lu

Coal Geology & Exploration

There is a huge gap in uranium resources in China. Only developing traditional uranium resources is unable to meet the increasing demand in energy and national defense construction. The exploitation and utilization of coal-type uranium resources can relieve the pressure of demand for uranium resources to a certain extent. By summarizing the research results of coal-type uranium in recent years, the ore location, uranium content range, formation time and distribution range of coal-bearing strata of major coal-type uranium deposits in China, and the definition criteria of coal-type uranium are given, which provides a basis for the classification of coal-type uranium …

Climbing China's Great Firewall, Adam Casey Jun 2018

Climbing China's Great Firewall, Adam Casey

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Many different countries censor the internet within their state. Citizens frequently wish to avoid the state censorship. There are many different methods that have been developed to achieve this. Governments and citizens are in a constant arms race, with both developing opposing technologies. China in particular has the largest population of people on the planet, and the Chinese government attempts to censor the internet. This paper will investigate three methods of navigating around state censorship: Cachebrowser, INTANG and Tor. Cachebrowser and INTANG were developed specifically to navigate around state censorship while Tor was originally developed for anonymous browsing. This paper …

A Study Of Satisfaction Level Of Hong Kong Tourists With Hot Springs Hotels And Resorts In Guangdong, China, Rob Law, Ruby Yip

Hospitality Review

The research reported here aimed at examining Hong Kong tourists’ level of satisfaction with hot springs hotels and resorts in Guangdong, China. Primary data were collected and service quality and tourist satisfaction levels were measured using the SERVQUAL model. The empirical findings indicate that most tourists are satisfied with the service quality of these hotels and resorts. Among the different dimensions of service quality, empathy receives the highest score. Overall satisfaction receives a score only slightly better than average. The results also reveal significant relationships among customer satisfaction level, loyalty, and recommendation.

Demographic, Behavioral And Perceptual Comparisons Of U.S Visitor Experience With Group Package Tours And Free Independent Travel To China, Mark A. Bonn, Howook "Sean" Chang, Jerome Agrusta, H. Leslie Furr, Woo Gon Kim Jan 2009

Demographic, Behavioral And Perceptual Comparisons Of U.S Visitor Experience With Group Package Tours And Free Independent Travel To China, Mark A. Bonn, Howook "Sean" Chang, Jerome Agrusta, H. Leslie Furr, Woo Gon Kim

Hospitality Review

U.S. visitor demand for the China travel experience is anticipated to rise significantly through 2105, causing the Chinese government to employ 100 million service providers over the next six years and raising concern about service delivery and perceptions of the on-site China experience. In an effort to better understand these issues concerning U.S. visitors, this study investigated two specific types of U.S. travelers to China: Group Package Tour (GPT) visitors and Free Independent Travel (FIT) visitors. Results indicated that GPT visitors were more likely to be older and have higher household income than FIT visitors. Four trip-related characteristics of GPT …

Oil. China And Oil In The Asian Pacific Region: Rising Demand For Oil, Pablo Bustelo Jul 2007

Oil. China And Oil In The Asian Pacific Region: Rising Demand For Oil, Pablo Bustelo

New England Journal of Public Policy

China’s growing demand for oil is significantly changing the international geopolitics of energy, especially in the Asian Pacific region. The recent growth in oil consumption, combined with forecasts of increased oil imports (especially from the Middle East), have led to deep concern among Chinese leaders regarding their country’s energy security. They are responding in a number of different ways. In particular, they are searching for new sources of supply and seeking to control purchases and transport lanes, while boosting national production at any cost. This is already causing tension with the United States and other big oil consumers, such as …

Climatic Differences And Similarities Between Indian And East Asian Monsoon Regions Of China Over The Last Millennium: A Perspective Based Mainly On Stalagmite Records, Ming Tan

International Journal of Speleology

Cave sediments, especially stalagmites, have been providing absolute dated climate records that can extend from the present to over 500,000 years ago. Based on the reconstructed temperature time series, a comprehensive overview of the climatic differences and similarities between the Indian and the East Asian Monsoon regions of China over the last millennium is presented. Evidence from accurately dated and high-resolution records including stalagmites, ice cores and tree rings show that there was a “Medieval Warm Period” (around 1000 to 1400 AD) in north and east China where climate is dominated by the East Asian monsoon; whilst no such interval …

Salinity Control In Northern China, G A. Robertson Jan 1985

Salinity Control In Northern China, G A. Robertson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

China has vast areas of saline land, perhaps as much as six million hectares. Some of this saline land is a result of marine influence in coastal areas and some is the resultof soil formation in areas with saline geological deposits and inadequate rainfall to leach out the salts at that time.

However, most saline soils in China are as a result of secondary salinisation processess induced by a hydrological imbalance resulting from over-clearing of the land or irrigation. This imbalance has produced rising watertables bringing the salt closer to the soil surface.

In this article, G..A. Robertson, Commissioner …
