Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The selective esterification of carboxylic acid derivatives with a variety of alkyl halides was carried out using ionic liquid as solvent in the presence of triethylamine. The reaction was found to proceed under relatively mild conditions with excellent conversions (up to 99%) and selectivities. The ionic liquid was recycled and reused.

Chelating Agent Free Solid Phase Extraction (Caf-Spe) Method For Separation And/Or Preconcentration Of Iron(Iii) Ions, Özcan Yalçinkaya, Orhan Murat Kalfa, Ali̇ Rehber Türker

This paper presents a chelating agent free solid phase extraction (CAF-SPE) method for the separation and/or preconcentration of trace iron(III) ions. This method is based on the sorption of Fe(III) ions without using any chelating agent onto Amberlyst 36 resin. A good relative standard deviation (3%), high recovery (>95%), high enrichment factor (100), and low detection limit (0.32 \mu g L^{-1}) were obtained. The adsorption capacity of resin was 117 mg g^{-1} for iron(III). The method was applied for the determination of iron various in water and commercial tea bag samples. Asymmetric Synthesis Of 8-O-4'-Neolignan Perseal B, Yamu Xia, Wei Wang, Yinglan Guo, Junfeng Li

Full details of an enantioselective total synthesis of 8-O-4'-neolignan perseal B are presented for the first time. The synthesis was achieved in 8 steps from vanillin and involved the asymmetric dihydroxylation reaction using AD-mix-\alpha to give the key intermedium (1S,2S)-1-(4-(benzyloxy)-3-methoxyphenyl)propane-1,2,3- triol, and the Mitsunobu reaction between phenylpropanoid and vanillin formed perseal B. The synthetic method of perseal B exhibits a new route for 8-O-4'-neolignan.

The vanadium(III) complexes of composition [VCl_{3-n}(OAr^{1,2})_n.(THF)_2] (OAr^1 = 2-phenylphenoxo and OAr^2 = 4-phenylphenoxo, THF = tetrahydrofuran; n = 1 /to 3) were prepared by in situ reaction of VCl_3.(THF)_3 with sodium salt of respective phenols in tetrahydrofuran. The complexes were characterised by elemental analysis, molar conductance, FTIR, UV-Vis, and FAB-mass spectral and magnetic studies. The thermal behaviour of some of the complexes was studied by TG-DTA. The dinuclear phenoxy bridged octahedral structures for the complexes were inferred from the spectral and magnetic studies.

Some new unsymmetrical and optically active 2,5-disubstituted 1,3,4-oxadiazoles 5a-j were efficiently synthesized by cyclization reaction of diacylhydrazides 4a-j. The synthesis of the title compounds was achieved by the reaction of acyl hydrazides 3a-b and N-phetaloyl-L-amino acids 1a-e in the presence of the phosphoroxy chloride (POCl_3) as an anhydrous reagent.

An efficient one-pot method for the synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridines from \beta-dicarbonyl compounds, aldehyde, and ammonium acetate is reported using sulfonic acid-functionalized silica at 90 °C under solvent-free conditions with good to excellent yields. The catalyst is easily prepared, stable (up to 300 °C), reusable, and efficiently used under reaction conditions.

A Calorimetric Study Of The Interaction Of Silver Ions With Jack Bean Urease, Ali Akbar Saboury, Elahe Poorakbar, Gholamreza Rezaei-Behbehani

A thermodynamic study of silver ions by jack bean urease (JBU) was carried out at 2 temperatures, 27 and 37 °C, in Tris buffer (30 mM; pH 7.0) using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). There was a set of 12 identical and noninteracting binding sites for the silver ions. The intrinsic dissociation equilibrium constant and the molar enthalpy of binding were 185 \mu M and -16.7 kJ mol^{-1} at 27 °C, and 229 \mu M and -16.3 kJ mol^{-1} at 37 °C, respectively. Aromatic compounds react smoothly with carboxylic acids in the presence of silica gel supported aluminium trichloride to afford the corresponding ketones with high regioselectivity in high to excellent yields. The catalyst is stable (as a bench top catalyst) and can be easily recovered and reused without appreciable change in its efficiency.

Gold nanoparticles supported on zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized at several pH levels via the deposition-precipitation (DP) method. The effects of pH on gold loading, particle size, and particle size distribution on the support were studied at the iso-electric point (IEP) as well as below and above the IEP of ZnO. The addition of the support significantly changed the pH of the solution. Using asymmetric Cobalt(III) salen catalysts, the ring-opening of epichlorohydrin by 2,3-dihydroxybenzal- dehyde and 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde was found to occur at the phenolic groups most distant from the aldehydic group. Switching catalysts afforded a reversal in enantioselectivity. For 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and salicylaldehyde, addition of AlCl_3 to the reaction mixture led to an increase in reaction rate without any decrease in product enantiopurity.

Synthesis, Spectroscopic Characterization, Mass Spectrometry, And Crystal Structure Of N-{[(4-Bromophenyl)Amino]Carbonothioyl}Benzamide, Sohail Saeed, Naghmana Rashid, Moazzam Bhatti, Peter Jones

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

N-{[(4-bromophenyl)amino]carbonothioyl}benzamide was synthesized and characterized by IR, ^1H- and ^{13}C-NMR, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The crystal structure was determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2_1/n with unit cell dimensions a = 13.822(3) Å, b = 5.927(2) Å, c = 16.642(3) Å, and \beta = 103.963(3)°. There is a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond of the type N__H \Lambda O, with an H\Lambda O distance of 2.6129 (11) Å. The mass fragmentation pattern is also discussed.

Convenient Synthesis And Anion Recognition Property Of Acylhydrazone-Based Molecular Tweezer Receptors, Hai-Xian Ren, Ming-Gen Zhao, Ying-Jin Wang

Three acylhydrazone-based compounds were designed as novel neutral sensors for anions, and synthesized by simple steps in good yields. Their anion recognition properties were studied by UV-vis and ^1H-NMR spectroscopy. The results showed that the receptors 1, 2, and 3 all had a better selectivity for F^- and CH_3COO^-, but no evident binding with Cl^-, Br^-, I^-, NO_3^-, H_2PO_{4}^-, or HSO_{4}^-. The results indicated that anion recognition was achieved via convergent hydrogen bond interactions from acylhydrazone functionality on the side arms. The UV-vis data indicated that a 1:1 stoichiometry complex was formed between compounds 1, 2, or 3 and anions. …

Superabsorbent polymers are obtained by the graft copolymerization of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesul- fonic acid (AMPS) monomer onto collagen, using ammonium persulfate as a free radical initiator in the presence of methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinker. Infrared spectroscopy and TGA thermal analysis were carried out to confirm the chemical structure of the hydrogel. Moreover, morphology of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of reaction variables on swelling capacity was investigated to achieve a hydrogel with improved water absorbency. A simple method for simultaneous pre-concentration of Cu, Ni, and Co metal ions prior to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry is reported. The method is based on the extraction of target ions via complexation with indane-1,2,3-trione 1,2-dioxime immobilized on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) coated alumina. Compounds 2 were synthesised via the reaction of 4-amino-5-thiophen-2-yl-methyl-2,4-dihydro-[1,2,4]-triazol-3-one (1) with aldehydes. Compounds 3 and 4 were obtained from compounds 2 with bromo acetophenone and ethyl bromoacetate, respectively. The essential oils of mosses [Tortula muralis Hedw. (Pottiaceae), Homalothecium lutescens (Hedw.) H. Rob. (Brachytheciaceae), Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. (Hypnaceae), and Pohlia nutans (Hedw.) Lindb. (Mniaceae)] were investigated by means of GC-FID/MS techniques. The major components were nonanal (18.3%) and tetradecanol (4.3%) in the oil of T. muralis, nonanal (36.8%) and tricosane (6.5%) in the oil of H. lutescens, nonanal (12.5%) and 2E-tetradecen-1-ol (6.9%) in the oil of H. cupressiforme, and nonanal (7.8%) and 2E-tetradecen-1-ol (7.1%) in the oil of P. nutans. The reaction of ethyl 5-oxo-3-arylamino-2,5-dihydroisoxazole-4- carboxylates with 2-chloropyrimidine and 2-chlorobenzoxazole gave the corresponding isoxazolones with pyrimidine and benzoxazole rings substituted on N-2. Their rearrangements with triethylamine in ethanol produced the corresponding imidazopyrimidine and aminoindole derivatives, respectively, through intramolecular cyclisation.

A stereoselective procedure for vinyl aryl ether bond formation by direct coupling of dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates and substituted phenols or naphthols under mild reaction conditions has been developed. Using guanidine hydrochloride as a new catalyst and water-acetone as green solvent, dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates were reacted with substituted phenols or naphthols in room temperature to produce vinyl aryl ethers in good to excellent yields.

N-acyl amino acids can be used as active surface agents in the detergents industry, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry and cosmetics. Properties of these compounds are superior to those of fatty acids soaps and they are not toxic to the environment and have low Kraft points, because of peptide bonds (CO-NH). Acylation at the nitrogen atom can be performed with good yields without catalysts, for strong nucleophilic derivatives. The 1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid 2 was converted via reactions of its acid chloride 3 with various hydroxylamine 4a-f and carbazate derivatives 8a-c into the corresponding novel N-substituted-4-benzoyl-1,5-dipenyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamides 5a-c, N,N-disubstituted-4-benzoyl-1,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylates 6d,e, 4-benzoyl-N-{[(4-benzoyl-1,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)carbonyl]oxy}- N-methyl-1,5dip- henyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide (7), and 4-benzoyl-N'-(alkoxycarbonyl)-1,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazole-3-car- bohydrazides 9a,b and 10, respectively, in good yields (65\%-90\%). The reactions of 3 with 4 and 8 in xylene for 8-15 h with catalytic amounts of base led to the formation of the products 5-7, 9, and 10. The structures of all new synthesized compounds were established by the ^{13}C-NMR, ^1H-NMR, IR spectroscopic data, and elemental analyses.

The main problem associated with metal hexacyanoferrates (MHCFs) is their instability at high pH values. We synthesized a new Prussian Blue analogue, Nile-Blue hexacyanoferrate (NBHCF), that remains stable in 0.2 M KOH. A carbon paste (CPE) chemically modified electrode (ME) containing NBHCF was prepared as a stable electrochemical sensor for measuring hydrazine. A detailed characterization of the electrochemical and electrocatalytic behavior of NBHCF was performed using cyclic voltammetric, chronoamperometric, differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) and hydrodynamic amperometric methods. A simple and fairly fast capillary zone electrophoresis method has been developed for the determination and separation of ceftriaxone, ceftizoxime, paracetamol, and diclofenac sodium in a mixture, in pharmaceutical formulations, and in blood serum. A 50 mM sodium tetraborate background electrolyte solution (pH 9.0) was found to be suitable for separation of all the drugs. An uncoated fused-silica capillary of a total length of 57 cm (effective length 50 cm) was used for separation. The acidity constants, relative stabilities, and tautomeric equilibrium constants of some 1,2,4-triazole derivatives were determined using the density functional theory (DFT) with the B3LYP method and 6-311G(d,p) basis set. The integral equation formalism version of the polarizable continuum model (IEFPCM) was used in the calculations of the aqueous phase. The calculated tautomeric equilibrium and relative stabilities values revealed that the 4H-1,2,4 triazole form for all studied molecules was favored over the 1H-1,2,4 triazole form. Protonation processes indicated the predominance of the 1H-1,2,4 triazole form over the 2H-1,2,4 triazole form. The enthalpies of formation for solid ionic nitronium squarate, [NO_2]_2[C_4O_4], and covalent squaric acid dinitrate ester, O_2N-C_4O_4-NO_2, were calculated using the complete basis set (CBS-4M) method of Petersson and coworkers in order to obtain very accurate energies. The covalent form (O_2N-C_4O_4-NO_2) was identified as the more stable isomer. The combustion parameters with respect to possible use as ingredients in solid rocket motors for both stable species were calculated using the EXPLO5 code. The performance of an aluminized formulation with covalently bound dinitrate ester (O_2N-C_4O_4-NO_2) was shown to be comparable to that of ammonium perchlorate/aluminum. The bacterial SEC pathway is commonly used for secretion of heterologous proteins in E. coli by fusing them to transported proteins to facilitate downstream processing. While some proteins are translocated very efficiently, some reside in the cytoplasm. In this work, maltose binding protein (MBP) was fused to 3 cytoplamic enzymes from Thermus thermophilus (serine protease, 251 residues; glucose isomerase, 381 residues; pullulanase, 718 residues) to study the protein transport from the cytoplasm by quantifying the distribution of activities in different cellular compartments. This paper reports the comparison of the activities of nanostructure Cu-ZSM-5 and Co-ZSM-5 catalysts for conversion of ethyl acetate and toluene and deals with the relationship between activity and structure of catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by ICP-AES, XPS, EDX, XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques. Catalytic studies were carried out under atmospheric pressure and in a temperature range of 200-500 °C. Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts showed better activity than Co-ZSM-5, revealing higher activity of copper cations. The higher activity was ascribed to higher electro-negativity, smaller cation radius, good distribution, and specific coordination of copper cations inside Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts. This study examined the influence of temperature, concentration, shearing time, and storage time on the rheological properties, i.e. the dynamic viscosity and shear stress, as a function of shear rate of chitosan solubilized in weakly acid solutions. The results showed that shear thinning behavior (pseudoplastic non-Newtonian behavior) was pronounced at temperatures from 20 to 50 °C, but was more remarkable at lower temperature. In addition, the activation energy value derived from ln \eta vs. 1/T data was found to be 20.86 kJ mol^{-1}. Three-armed poly(methyl methacrylate)[PMMA] was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization at 100 °C using benzene-1,3,5-triyl tris(4-(bromomethyl) benzoate as 3-armed initiator and a cuprous(I) bromide/2,2'-bipyridine catalytic system. The characterization of PMMA was confirmed by FT-IR, ^1H-NMR, GPC, DSC, and TGA techniques. Optical absorption measurements were also studied by UV-VIS technique. Transmittance and reflectance measured in the wavelength range 300-700 nm were used to calculate the optical constants. Multichannel spectrophotometry was performed to assay for paraoxon in spiked beverages. A 96-well microplate was used for this purpose. The measuring protocol was based on inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase by paraoxon that resulted in decreased or no reaction of the enzyme product thiocholine with Ellman's reagent (5,5'-dithiobis [2-nitrobenzoic acid]). The above assay was practically tested using spiked drinking water, mineral water, and coffee. Analytical parameters such as the limit of detection, time, and sample size consumption were adequate. The limit of detection for beverages ranged from 32 to 48 ppb corresponding to 0.32-0.48 ng of paraoxon in absolute values. …
