A Glancing Incidence Exafs Study Of Evaporated Silver Films On Glass, Ahmet Bulut, Bünyami̇n Karabulut, Engi̇n Başaran, James Robinson

A glancing incidence EXAFS experiment has been carried out with evaporated silver films on glass substrates. Prior to EXAFS data collection, a reflectivity curve was performed from which the critical angle for total external reflection of x-rays from surface were determined. The analysed EXAFS data revealed that there is a reduction in the coordination number and an increase in Debye-Waller factor compared to bulk values. These changes were explained in terms of grain size effect and the surface effects of the silver film.

Properties of internal photoemission in a PtSi-Si Schottky junction have been studied. The traditional Fowler plot of a detector's photoyield is found to be nonlinear for values close to the barrier height of the junction. It is shown that the model that takes all scattering mechanisms into account provides a successful description for the experimental results. It is also shown that the photoemission spectrum is independent of temperature in agreement with this model. The properties of detector's ambient influence the photoemission spectrum for wavelength of 3 $\mu$m or less. A strong loss in the detector's response is observed at around …

The second order contribution for the relativistic scattering of massless spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles from an infinitely long solenoid, in the context of covariant perturbation theory, is calculated and shown to vanish. Thus, Born approximation is consistent for this case as well.

The fragmentation mechanism of the super heated Ni4 cluster is studied by employing the microcanonical molecular dynamics simulations and an empirical model potential. Ni$_{4}$ cluster is heated up above the bulk Ni evaporation point temperature and then classical trajectory analysis as well as RRK theory are used to calculate survival probability, evaporation rate, average kinetic energy release and dissociation energy.

The Magnetic Super-Exchange Coupling In Copper(Ii) Acetate Monohydrate And A Redetermination Of The Crystal Structure, Ayhan Elmali

The magnetic properties and redetermination of crystal structure of copper(II) acetate monohydrate have been studied. The copper(II) centers are separated by 2.617(1) \AA \ and antiferromagnetically coupled (-2J = 292.2 cm$^{-1}$), which follows from temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 4.2 to 300 K. The magnetic moment at 300 K is about 2.1 Bohr magnetons while 0.1 Bohr magnetons at 4.2 K. The magnetic susceptibility is at a maximum near 250 K and decreases rapidly as the temperature is lowered to liquid helium temperature.

Antiferromagnetic transition in $\alpha$-Mn-Fe alloys has been studied using resistivity-temperature measurements from 300 to 1.5 K. The results indicate that the transition temperature $T_N$ of the samples studied increases with increasing Fe concentration. This suggests that the N\'{e}el temperature is affected by Fe. Also, Fe plays a significant role in the local disorder on the magnetic moment of the ions in the complex manganese structure.

Determination Of Optical Constant Of Materials By Two Different Methods: An Application To Single Crystals Si, Hazi̇ret Durmuş, Haluk Şafak, Haldun Karabiyik

The normal reflectance of single crystal Si was measured at 0.5 5.6 eV range by unpolarized light. Optical parameters of Si were determined from this reflectance data by using two different methods: oscillator fit procedure and Kramers-Kronig analysis. The refractive index, extinction coefficient and the real and imaginary parts of complex dielectric constant obtained by these two methods were compared. A good agreement was found between two methods. Furthermore, the optical parameters so obtained seem to be in a satisfactory agreement with the literature.

In this study, the Kajiwara model has been applied to Cu-14.8at.\%Sn alloy with good agreement with experimental results. For this alloy, the austenite phase has a body centered cubic (bcc) lattice and the martensite phase has a monoclinic 9R superlattice. Using the lattice parameters of both phases, the calculated habit plane indices, magnitude of the lattice invariant shear and orientation relationships, have been compared with the observed results for this alloy.

Product operator formalism is widely used for analytical description of multiple-pulse NMR experiments for weakly coupled spin systems. 3D J-resolved NMR spectroscopy is widely used in order to resolve the chemical shift along one axis and spin-spin coupling parameters along the two other axis. In this study, product operator theory is used for analytical description of heteronuclear 3D J-resolved NMR spectroscopy for the \( IS_nK_m (I=1/2, S=1/2, K=1/2; n=1,2, m=1,2,3) \) spin system.

We studied the static mass-radius relation of white dwarf stars with masses greater than 0.45 $M_\odot$. We assumed pure degenerate helium interiors at a finite temperature with luminosity-mass ratio due to neutrino energy loss. We compared the obtained M-R relation with those of other writers.

In this letter, an alternative approximation is developed for the treatment of breakup process in nuclear reactions, which presents a way of evaluating non-adiabatic corrections to the adiabatic model three-body wavefunction by introducing a more consistent prescription for the continuum n-p center of mass energy. Although the present formalism goes beyond the quasi-adiabatic approach, due to the use of exact continuum channel energies, its application to deuteron involving reactions at medium energies shows that such an approach can not be used in its present form. A possible reason behind this failure is discussed.

SnSe and SnS have been grown by Bridgman- Stockbarger method. Loading time as a function of vickers microhardness has been measured at different temperatures in the range 303 K to 388K. Al measurement of hardness have been carried out on the cleavage planes. The activation energy for creep has been evaluated to be 2.92 and 1.75 K Cal/mole, respectively, for SnSe and SnS crystals.

$A^{III}B^{III}C_2^{VI}$ single crystals were grown by the modified Bridgman-Stockbarger method, a procedure similar to direct freezing in our crystal growth laboratory. $A^{III}B^{III}C_2^{VI}$ compounds are collected into two groups (III. group: TI, Ga, In and VI. group: Se, S, Te): 1. TlGaSe$_2$, TlGaS$_2$ and TlInS$_2$ have layer structure. 2. TlInSe$_2$, TlInTe$_2$ and TlGaTe$_2$ have chained structure. The main reasons such crystals grown with this method is similar to the direct freezing method because 1) quality of crystals is the same as crystals grown by other methods, and 2) growth time of crystals is shorter by about 5-10 days. High-temperature superconducting ceramics systems YBaCuO and BiSrCaCuO, both doped by Pb, Sb, Li, K, Na and non-doped, have been produced by the method of solid phase reaction synthesis. The principle of controlled valency by Vervey has been used to characterize high-temperature superconductors. High-temperature superconducting ceramics have been obtained with properties stable in time by single-purpose doping.

$p-TlGaSe_2$, $p-TlIn_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}Se_2$ and $p-TlIn_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}Se_2$ single crystals were grown by the modified Bridgman-Stockbarger method in our crystal growth laboratory. The absorption measurements were carried out on $p-TlIn_xGa_{(1-x)}Se_2$ samples in temperature range 10-300 K in steps of 10 K. The binding energies of $p-TlGaSe_2$, $p-TlIn_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}Se_2$ and $p-TlIn_{0.5} Ga_{0.5}$ $Se_2$ were obtained as \\ 35.0 meV, 16.5 meV and 14.5 meV, respectively. THe direct band gaps were calculated as 2.244 eV, 2.195 eV, 2.164 eV in $p-TlGaSe_2$, 2.158 eV, 2.131 eV, 2.098 eV in $p-TlIn_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}Se_2$, and 2.107 eV, 2.075 eV, 2.019 eV in $p-TlIn_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}Se_2$ respectively, at sample temperatures of 10 K, 140 K …

The \( p/d \) hybridization that primarily characterizes copper leads to local moments, lacking of the pair-breaking variety, both at di- and trivalent sites. Support for the negative-U model is extracted from the author's earlier work on the metal-insulator transition. A more magnetically oriented model, like the resonant valence band model which we have recently associated with our observations in d1 TiOCl etc., does not really seem suited to the geometry and electronic conditions in the copper oxides present. We study the Coulomb drag rate for electrons in a double quantum-wire structure in the presence of disorder. We use the particle number-conserving relaxation-time approximation to phenomenologically broaden the response functions entering the drag rate expression to account for the disorder effects. In contrast to the usual low-temperature regime investigated by various researchers, we focus our attention on the high-temperature drag rate to which plasmon modes are known to make substantial contribution. Single layer Fe(20Å) and Co(20Å) and multilayered Ag(20Å)/[Fe(20Å)/Ag(40Å)/Co(20Å)/Ag (40Å)] x 3/Ag(20Å) films were prepared in UHV by magnetron sputtering technique onto the silicon substates. Films were determined to have polycrystalline nature through SEM examination. Magnetization measurements were made on single and multilayer films. Due to the polycrystalline structure of the films, rounded magnetization curves were obtained. The GMR effect showed a rounded behaviour which also is an indication of the polycrystallinity of the films. The GMR effect, measured in Fe/Ag/Co multilayer structure, was analyzed with the help of magnetization behaviour of the multilayer structure and magnetization behaviour of the single …

The older methods for the determination of the degree of a random mix was solely based on the calculation of a simple standard deviation. Physical characteristics like, density, average particle weight and size of each component was not considered. Therefore, the evaluation, when the state of a random mix is reached, was somewhat superficial. Poole, Taylor, and Wall [1] have derived equations, where the physical characteristics of the components were taken into consideration. Hot Electron Light emission and Lasing In Semiconductor Heterostructures (HEL-LISH-1) is a novel hot electron surface emitter consisting of a GaAs QW on the n side of an Ga_{1-x}Al_xAs p-n junction. It utilises hot electron transport parallel to the junction plane. The injection of hot electron hole pairs into the QW is achieved via tunnelling and thermionic emission processes. Recently this structure has been modified by the incorporation of an upper and lower DBR defining a VCSEL (HELLISH-VCSEL). The Lattice Dynamics Of \Gamma-Iron, Kemal Çolakoğlu, G. Uğur, M. Çakmak, H. M. Tütüncü

Lattice dynamical calculations are performed on \gamma-iron using the Clark-Gazis-Wallis (CGW) model to represent the ion-ion interactions, and a modified form of the Sharma-Joshi model to include ion-electron interactions. The theory is used to compute the phonon dispersion curves, frequency spectra and the lattice specific heat of \gamma-iron. The obtained results are in good agreement with the experimental findings, and are better than those calculated using the other theories.

Partial coordinate number for amorphous compounds, consisting three type of atoms has been determined by way of calculation of the radial distribution curve maximum. The equation solution method has been used as algorithm in programme, which writed in FORTRAN language for working in IBM compatible computers. The programme is compact and integable. The programme has been used for determination partial coordinate number of ytterbium atom in amorphous compounds- YbAs_2S_4, Yb_3As_4S_9, YbAs_4Te_7, Yb_3As_4Se_9 YbAs_4Se_7. Real value of partial coordinate number of ytterbium in this compunds is 2 or 3.

We report a detailed theoretical study of the angular dependence and mode distribution of the acoustic phonon emission by hot two-dimensional electron gases in GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunctions and quantum wells and compare the results with some recent heat pulse measurements for carrier temperatures below 50 K. Common to all the experimental results was the strong dependence of the ratio of emitted longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons to transverse acoustic (TA) phonons from the width of the quantum well and the absence of LA phonons propagating in a direction close to the 2DEG normal for GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunctions. The theory of optical phonons and their confinement in heterostructures is reviewed with analogies made to the theory of acoustic phonons. The dielectric continuum (DC) model is obtained when bulk dispersion is ignored and the hybrid model is found when dispersion is included. The issue of boundary conditions is investigated and the solutions are shown with comparisons made using electron-phonon scattering.

The Effect Of Non-Equilibrium Acoustic Phonons On The Tunnel Current In Gaas/Alas Superlattices, S. A. Cavill, F. F. Ouali, L. J. Challis, A. J. Kent, M. Henini, A. V. Akimov

We present the first study of the effect of ballistic acoustic phonons generated by a heated metal film on the tunnel current in GaAs/AlAs superlattices. The phonon-induced increase of the tunnel current as a function of applied voltage has a maximum at a voltage that varies linearly with heater temperature both in zero and applied magnetic field. The behaviour is consistent with phonon-assisted tunnelling by stimulated phonon emission. The system acts as a phonon spectrometer in the < 1THz frequency region with a resolution of approximately 200 GHz.

The effect of pre-illumination on both thermally stimulated current and photocurrent spectra of TlInS_2 crystal is investigated. The increase in the photosensitivity of the crystal by several orders of magnitude together with the appearance of a new peak in the thermally stimulated current spectrum are observed as a result of the pre-illumination process. The filling of the traps, especially the sensitizing centers, during the pre-illumination is found to be the most favourable physical mechanism to explain the results.
