Assessing The Knowledge On Sustainability And Barriers To Daily Sustainable Practices Among Faculty And Students In Higher Education: The Case Of Eastern Illinois University, Joel Edem Holison
Masters Theses
The concept of sustainable development gained prominence with the publication of the Brundtland Report, which emphasized economic progress without jeopardizing future generations' well-being. Following that, the Education for Sustainability (EfS) program was created by the United Nations to raise sustainability awareness. However, the transition to sustainable living is fraught with difficulties, including a lack of knowledge, financial constraints, infrastructure gaps, and political ideologies. This study focuses on sustainable practices among Eastern Illinois University (EIU) students and faculty, as well as the barriers to daily sustainable behaviors. As independent variables influencing sustainable practices, the study evaluates sustainability knowledge/awareness, personal financial situation, …
Pd-Based Photocatalysts For Heck C-C Cross-Coupling Reactions, Suha Ali Alshehri
Pd-Based Photocatalysts For Heck C-C Cross-Coupling Reactions, Suha Ali Alshehri
Masters Theses
Heck C-C cross-coupling reaction has been widely employed in synthetic organic chemistry because of its high efficiency and simplicity, however the conventional Heck C-C cross-coupling reaction conditions involve the use of an expensive toxicant phosphine-ligated palladium complexes, and high temperature. To address these drawbacks, a highly efficient, homogeneous photocatalyst based on BODIPY for the Heck C-C cross-coupling reactions of aryl iodide and methyl acrylate in DMF solvent under inert conditions has been developed. The 4-Py-BDP-Pd, 3-Py-BDP-Pd and, 2-Py-BOD-Pd catalysts were synthesized and purified using column chromatography. The optical properties of products and intermediates were studied by UV/vis absorption and fluorescence …
Low-Head Dam Removal Increases Functional Diversity Of Stream Fish Assemblages, Adam Christopher Jones
Low-Head Dam Removal Increases Functional Diversity Of Stream Fish Assemblages, Adam Christopher Jones
Masters Theses
Despite the growing number of dam removals to date, very few have been studied to understand their impacts on stream fish communities. Despite being the most common type of dam in the U.S., an even smaller proportion of studies focus on the impacts of low-head dam removals, instead, focusing on the impacts of removal of larger dams. In this study, two previously impounded Illinois rivers were monitored to assess the impacts of low-head dam removal on the functional assemblage of stream fishes. This was accomplished by aggregating fishes into habitat and reproductive guilds, relating community changes to habitat, environmental metrics, …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Two Station Starburst Pseudorotaxane, Janaka Prasad Kaviraj Kavikarage
Synthesis And Characterization Of A Two Station Starburst Pseudorotaxane, Janaka Prasad Kaviraj Kavikarage
Masters Theses
Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) are arranged with mechanical bonds. These molecules cannot be separated without breaking the required covalent bonds. There are different kinds of MIMs, such as rotaxanes, catenanes, suitanes, borromean rings, and molecular knots. These MIMs are stabilized by non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds, π-π stacking, and ion-dipole interactions. Dialkylammonium ions, bis(pyridinium)ethane dications, viologen species, and naphthalene diimide π-deficient groups are typical examples of recognition motifs for crown ethers.
In the research described here, we synthesized a new axle, based on a combination of benzobis(imidazolium) (BBI) and viologen species. The axle contains two recognition sites: one is …
Cheeger Constants Of Two Related Hyperbolic Riemann Surfaces, Ronald E. Hoagland
Cheeger Constants Of Two Related Hyperbolic Riemann Surfaces, Ronald E. Hoagland
Masters Theses
This thesis concerns the study of the Cheeger constant of two related hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. The first surface R is formed by taking the quotient U2/Γ(4), where U2 is the upper half-plane model of the hyperbolic plane and Γ(4) is a congruence subgroup of PSL2(Z), an isometry group of U2 . This quotient is shown to form a Riemann surface which is constructed by gluing sides of a fundamental domain for Γ(4) together according to certain specified side pairings. To form the related Riemann surface R' , we follow a similar procedure, this time taking the …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Starburst Pseudorotaxanes And Their Metallic Derivatives, Shalini D. Kadinappulige
Synthesis And Characterization Of Starburst Pseudorotaxanes And Their Metallic Derivatives, Shalini D. Kadinappulige
Masters Theses
Mechanically Interlocked Molecules (MIMs) are interlocked molecular architectures, characterized by the fact that they are linked through a mechanical bond. Catenanes, rotaxanes, molecular knots, and Borromean rings are typical examples for these molecules. Since MIMs are not connected by covalent bonds, hydrogen bonding, π- π stacking, and/or electrostatic interactions help bring the components together. Dialkyl-ammonium centers, bis(pyridinium)ethane dications, viologen species, and naphthalenediimide π-deficient groups are well known as recognition motifs for crown ethers. In the research described here, we have synthesized several pseudorotaxanes and their tricyclohexyltin metallic derivatives, based on benzobis(imidazolium) (BBI) salts as axles, in combination with the 15DN38C10 …

Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of Chemical Tools To Study Peroxisomal Import, Jhalak N. Timilsena
Masters Theses
Peroxisomes are dynamic and interconnected single lipid membrane bound organelles found in the eukaryotic cells which are involved in various biochemical processes including the b-oxidation of very long chain and branched chain fatty acids, metabolism of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, and reduction of hydrogen peroxide among others. These organelles are known to host numerous proteins and enzymes depending on the cellular environment. All of the proteins needed in the peroxisomes are encoded in the nucleus and synthesized in the cytosol which are then transported to the peroxisomes with the help of a sophisticated protein-transport machinery. Pex5 is one of …

Developing A Basket-Shaped Host Molecule Based On P-Tert-Butylcalix[4]Arene Featuring Urea Groups For Encapsulating Volatile Guest Molecules, Lokugama Widanelage Vidula Priyadarshana
Masters Theses
Molecular baskets are a group of synthetic host molecules which are designed to govern the inclusion of small guest molecules. The basic structural features of basket-shaped host molecules are a cavity for holding a much smaller guest molecule and tunable gates for keeping the guest molecule inside. These types of gates can be tuned by changing temperature, concentration, pH, etc. In this research group's previous study, a molecular basket of cal ix[ 4]arene with carboxylic acid groups was synthesized by functionalizing calix[4]arene's phenol hydroxyl groups with benzyl bromide building blocks. In the study detailed here, 1 , l '-((5-(bromomethyl)-1,3-phenylene)bis(methylene))bis(3-isopropylurea) was …

Identifying Priority Conservation Areas And Strategies For Myotis Sodalis (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) Via Habitat And Connectivity Modeling, Ashleigh B. Cable
Masters Theses
Myotis sodalis, the Indiana bat, is a federally endangered bat species in the United States of America (USA). Conservation efforts are typically focused at identified maternity sites at local scales, however, the species is a regional migrant that interacts with its environment at multiple spatial scales. We are limited in our knowledge of landscape-level requirements of this species, especially in large areas such as Illinois, USA, where a wide range of environmental and landscape conditions exist. Many previous M. sodalis habitat studies have limited their focus to smaller spatial scales. Due to limitations in funding, personnel, and time, it …

Synthesis Toward A Molecular Container Based On P-Tert-Butylcalix[4]Arene With Gate Features, Balasooriya Appuhamilage Dinesh Madushan Balasooriya
Masters Theses
Nowadays molecular and supramolecular chemistry have endless examples for the development of smart devices. Among those applications, nano-baskets of calixarenes play vital roles in host-guest chemistry. One of the main appealing concepts of this field is the development of host molecules with gate features. These hosts are designed and constructed for the delivery of chemical or biochemical species that are volatile, or reactive, or sensitive to normal solution environment and they are mainly functioned by predefined groups that are responsive toward stimuli such as concentration, temperature, pH and so on. In our previous study, we found that benzyl bromides can …

Studying Carbon Dioxide Solvent Properties By Microwave Spectroscopic Investigations Of Vinyl Fluoride/Carbon Dioxide Clusters And Developing New Approaches To Decode Rotational Spectra, Prashansa Kannangara
Masters Theses
Supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-C02) is an excellent green solvent, but its properties are not thoroughly understood. For example, fluorinated compounds have higher than expected solubility in sc-C02. Microwave spectroscopy is one way to learn more about sc-C02 because it can be used to determine detailed structures of small clusters of molecules. The purpose of this investigation was to study weak hydrogen bonding interactions in complexes of fluorinated ethylene (solute) with carbon dioxide (C02, solvent). Investigations on dimers with one C02 molecule and fluorinated ethylene were carried out previously and found two different …

Impacts Of Plant-Microbe Interactions On Seedling Performance In A Riparian Forest Invaded By Lonicera Maackii, Taylor E. K. Strehl
Masters Theses
Soil microbes have profound impacts on plant growth and survival and can either promote or inhibit plant dominance. Exotic plants are often strongly invasive because they have escaped their natural enemies, potentially including antagonistic soil microbes. I examined how the invasive shrub Lonicera maackii and a common native tree, Acer negundo, responded to soil microbial communities to determine the role of soil microbes in regulating invasion success. This was done by growing both species with microbes from invaded (L. maackii) and uninvaded (A. negundo) soils collected from three locations within a riparian forest. Seedlings were …

Solvation Properites Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Using Chirped-Pulse Fourier-Transform Microwave Spectra Of Carbon Dioxide / 1, 1-Difluoroethene (Dfe) Mixtures, Tulana Ariyaratne Subasinghe Arachchige
Masters Theses
Supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-C02) is a highly utilized industrial substance identified as an excellent solvent and a surfactant, which is cheaper and less hazardous than other typical solvents. The higher solubility of fluorinated hydrocarbons than their hydrocarbon (HC) analogs is not well understood and the theory behind the microsolvation of sc-C02 cannot be fully explained with the existing chemical information. Microwave spectroscopy is a good method of identifying the structural arrangement of clusters made from fluorinated HCs and C02. I n this project, microwave scans of the four different mixtures of 1 , 1-difluoroethene (DFE) …
Complex Varieties As Minima, Richard Koss
Complex Varieties As Minima, Richard Koss
Masters Theses
We will explore various numeric methods of finding roots of an analytic function over some open set of the complex plane. We will discuss a method of visually observing the roots, a gradient descent method for finding the roots of an analytic function, a gradient descent method for solving systems of analytic functions, and finally a method of descent that uses osculating circles to find roots of an analytic function. Of particular interest to this thesis are roots of complex polynomials. There will be examples, code snippets, and outputs of programs to illustrate all of these methods.
Hidden Symmetries In Classical Mechanics And Related Number Theory Dynamical System, Mohsin Md Abdul Karim
Hidden Symmetries In Classical Mechanics And Related Number Theory Dynamical System, Mohsin Md Abdul Karim
Masters Theses
Classical Mechanics consists of three parts: Newtonian, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics, where each part is a special extension of the previous part. Each part has explicit symmetries (the explicit Laws of Motion), which, in turn, generate implicit or hidden symmetries (like the Law of Conservation of Energy, etc). In this Master's Thesis, different types of hidden symmetries are considered; they are reflected in the Noether Theorem and the Poincare Recurrence Theorem applied to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Systems respectively.
The Poincare Recurrence Theorem is also applicable to some number theory problems, which can be considered as dynamical systems. In …

Variation In Leaf Morphology Of An Alpine Shrub Community Along Environmental Gradients, Abdulssalam Khafsha
Masters Theses
Mountains represent complex environment gradients which strongly affect local temperature regimes and rainfall. These changes in climate conditions drive a diversity of plant responses. As alpine environments are expected to change dramatically in response to climate change, understanding plant responses to environmental variation is critical in these environments. Although they are a critical component of alpine communities, the environmental responses of shrubs have been much less examined than trees, representing an important knowledge gap. Leaves, as the primary photosynthetic organs on plants, would be expected to respond strongly to local climate conditions. In this study, I documented how the leaf …

Synthesis, Characterization And Mechanistic Studies Of Biomimetic Dinuclear Copper(Ii) Complexes, Millaniyage Nuwanthaka Prasad Jayaweera
Masters Theses
Dinuclear copper complexes are significant synthetic targets due to their use as model compounds for the active sites of type 3 copper proteins like catechol oxidase. A distinct class of ligands used in these studies are built on a phenol core to witch various donor side-arms were appended at the 2 and 6 positions of the arene ring. In our quest to quantify the influence of electron donating or withdrawing groups attached to the central arene ring, we have designed a set of ligands that, upon coordination to copper(II) centers, would produce complexes of the general structure. During this research …

Seven new copper(II) complexes were prepared from the condensation reaction of 4-tert-butyl-2,6-diformylphenol with two equivalents of bis(pyrazolyl)ethanamine or 3,5-dimethyl-bis(pyrazolyl)ethanamine moieties in the presence of two equivalents of various copper(II) starting materials having different counter ions (i.e. acetate - AcO-, perchlorate - CIO4-, tetrafluoroborate - BF4-, nitrate - NO3-, and chloride - Cl-). The resulting copper(II) complexes were characterized in solid state by single crystal X-ray crystallography, and in solution by UV-Vis and ESI/MS spectroscopies.
X-ray crystallographic studies showed that in solid state two types of …
Processing Different Mixtures Of Regionally Available Resources To Create Pellets That Meet A Minimum Standard, Jacob Hixson
Processing Different Mixtures Of Regionally Available Resources To Create Pellets That Meet A Minimum Standard, Jacob Hixson
Masters Theses
There are several ways to produce energy today, one of the oldest is the gasification of biomass. This process uses a fire to heat the material until it starts to produce gasses that are used as fuel. There are several types of biomass that can be used, many of which have large pieces with low bulk densities. By pelletizing the biomass bulk density increases and allows the opportunity to add in other biomass materials.
There are standards for condensing large pieces of biomass to smaller pelletized materials. Pellet Fuels Institute has set minimum standards for pellets used in the different …

Co-Product Potential Of Algae Biocake, Elizabeth J. Nixon
Co-Product Potential Of Algae Biocake, Elizabeth J. Nixon
Masters Theses
Society needs to find replacements for fossil fuels, which are finite resources that may be fully depleted within a few generations. While solar and wind have great potential as alternative energy sources, they are unlikely to completely replace all of the current fuel sources, particularly liquid fuels. Plant biomass has great potential for this market, and is already used in many forms for heat energy (e.g. direct combustion). However, the bulk density of important bioenergy crops, particularly grasses, is often low, which necessitates the use of binders in densification strategies. In the present study, waste algae biocake from a proprietary …
Impact Of Temperature Increase On Freshwater Fish Species: Energetics And Muscle Mechanics Of Two Centrarchids, Israt Jahan
Impact Of Temperature Increase On Freshwater Fish Species: Energetics And Muscle Mechanics Of Two Centrarchids, Israt Jahan
Masters Theses
Fishes have evolved physiologically to live within a specific range of environmental variation and existence outside of that range can be stressful or fatal. These ranges can coincide for fishes that evolved in similar habitats. This study investigates physiological processes limiting thermal tolerance, specifically how changes in water temperature affect the swimming energetics and muscle mechanics in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus). I focused on the impact of temperature change at the muscle level in these two species and the capacity to adapt to rapid changes in the environment. Fish were housed at …

Pd-Based Photocatalysts For Sonogashira C-C Cross-Coupling Reactions, Komadhie Charuka Dissanayake
Masters Theses
Sonogashira C-C cross-coupling reaction has been heavily used for its simplicity, flexibility and value. Although the original Sonogashira C-C cross coupling reaction conditions entail the use of 0.5 mol% of Pd catalyst, 2 mol% of Cul as co-catalyst at room temperature, the experimental conditions used in laboratories to prepare some compounds vary substantially, especially with respect to the reaction time, temperature and loading amount of the catalysts. The most significant drawback of the conventional Sonogashira reaction is the use of Cul as it leads to the formation of homocoupling product when the reaction is exposed to air or oxidizing agents. …

Bioimaging has become a significant tool for the visualization of biological events and the detection of numerous biomarkers. However, detection sensitivity is compromised by background signal from the biofluid which interferes with signals from the probes that usually emit in the visible region Alternative probes such as those that emit in the near-infrared (NIR) region are necessary to overcome these shortcomings. Lanthanide ions have demonstrated efficiency with sharp characteristic emission in the visible and (NIR) region. Emission however is mostly achieved by indirect sensitization process in which energy from the triplet state of a sensitizer is transferred to the excited …

Functionalized Bodipy Dyes For Near-Infrared Emission Of Lanthanide Complexes, Rukshani Wickrama Arachchi
Masters Theses
For many decades, fluorophores have been used to investigate natural systems, but autofluorescence and photobleaching diminish the detection capacity. Recently, BODIPY based lanthanide complexes have been synthesized and their photophysical properties have been investigated. These complexes exhibit higher emission efficiencies at NIR region with longer NIR lifetimes upon exciting at longer wavelength.
In this study, two BODIPY based lanthanide complexes were synthesized and their photophysical properties were evaluated. BODIPY based ligands were synthesized with phenanthroline as the ligand binding group. These ligands exhibit strong absorption at 527 nm and 532 nm, fluorescence at 540 nm and 548 nm with 0.55 …

Our study was focused on synthesis and characterization of new family of metal complexes that mimic the active site of copper containing enzymes. Our approach focused on preparing a series of metalloligands which vary systematically in structure and use them in combination with additional metallic centers to synthesize our desired complexes.
We synthesized a main ligand, which is named as HLQ 2Pz, which contain a quinoline body, one amide bond and two pyrazolyl rings. We synthesized a copper complex by deprotonating HLQ 2Pz using KOH. The ligand coordinated to the copper(II) center through its quinoline nitrogen, two of …
