Overtone Analysis Of A Holtkamp Organ Using Fourier Methods, Mario Harper, David Berg Apr 2013

Overtone Analysis Of A Holtkamp Organ Using Fourier Methods, Mario Harper, David Berg

Mario Yuuji Harper

This research is a study of the similarities and differences of the four sound families (principal, flute, reed, and string) of the organ, specifically, we used the organ located in the Kent Hall at USU. This experiment focuses on the mechanics of the organ, turning sound into mathematical signals, and performing Fourier analysis using computer methods. We conclude that a certain family of pipes (flute pipe family) had the most similarities to the “natural” series while the reed family was the most variant. We show the steps taken in our experiment and attempt to explain the variance and correlation of …

The Rise Of Science In Japan: 日本科学発展と原因, Mario Harper Apr 2013

The Rise Of Science In Japan: 日本科学発展と原因, Mario Harper

Mario Yuuji Harper

Franck-Hertz Experiment, Mario Yuuji Harper, Blake Moore Apr 2013

Franck-Hertz Experiment, Mario Yuuji Harper, Blake Moore

Mario Yuuji Harper

The phenomenon investigated in this experiment was whether or not it was possible to excite atoms by low-energy electron bombardment, and to determine if the energy transferred from the colliding electrons were always in discrete amounts. This was investigated using thermally excited electrons that were accelerated across a potential through a homogenous gas of a single element. A slowing potential was applied at the anode making electrons that transferred their energy via inelastic collisions to lose their energy before arriving at the detector, this caused drastic decreases in the current observed. These decreases in current always occurred at the same …

Simulating Exoplanet Detection Of Kepler Via Monte-Carlo Techniques, Manuel Marcano, Mario Yuuji Harper Apr 2013

Simulating Exoplanet Detection Of Kepler Via Monte-Carlo Techniques, Manuel Marcano, Mario Yuuji Harper

Mario Yuuji Harper

The Kepler mission was launched in 2009 with the intent to find earth-like planets around other star systems. Since it's launch, the number of known (and suspected) exoplanets have increased substantially from 200 to 3000. With this increase in data now available, we have chosen to model through a monte-carlo simulation, the possibility of being able to see exoplanets in a random part of the sky (using the parameters of the Kepler spacecraft). We show that there is a 0.18 to 0.01 percent chance of being able to detect exoplanets.

Energy In Japan 日本のエネルギー, Mario Yuuji Harper

Mario Yuuji Harper

A simple explanation of energy uses and their import costs for Japan in 2010. Given more as an exercise in English than as an academic presentation.
