Fashioning A Better Future: Why Educating Young People About The Impact Of Their Clothing Choices Matters, Andrea B. Neiman
Fashioning A Better Future: Why Educating Young People About The Impact Of Their Clothing Choices Matters, Andrea B. Neiman
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
This thesis explores who and what is harmed by the production and consumption of clothing. The research investigates the roots of today's slow fashion phenomenon. The evolution of anti-consumerism, do-it-yourself culture and "upcycling" is critically examined. In the twenty-first century, various options exist for individuals looking to shop and dress in a way that is reflective of their personal ideals about social justice, animal rights and environmental protection. Since young people are so receptive to fashion trends and spend their disposable income on clothing, educating them about the impact of their choices is imperative. The appendix contains a high school …
Mind The Gap: How Metaphor And Mathematics Make (And Remake) The World, Susan J. Sechrist
Mind The Gap: How Metaphor And Mathematics Make (And Remake) The World, Susan J. Sechrist
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
To challenge myself beyond writing an analytical research paper, I decided that the best way to encapsulate my interdisciplinary experience was to do an interdisciplinary project. Since my area of focus was about the relationship between fiction and nonfiction, my thesis would be as well. This project consists of several sections of analytical work with chapters from an ongoing work of fiction sandwiched (I hope, illustratively) between. The story, called The Bathymetrist, is about Milo Finn, a teenaged girl who spends summer days in a row boat out on a pond behind her house. She begins to map the bottom …
John Muir: A Rugged, Religious, Sensitive Mountain Man, Bradley B. Ward
John Muir: A Rugged, Religious, Sensitive Mountain Man, Bradley B. Ward
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
John Muir is known for having helped found the Sierra Club, and for having been its first president. Muir Woods, a grove of old-growth redwoods and popular tourist destination north of San Francisco, is named for him. California's state quarter features Muir and world-renowned Yosemite National Park, which he assisted in founding. He also fought to prevent the Tuolumne River from being dammed to create the Hetch Hetchy reservoir. Thus, Muir clearly possessed conservationist attitudes and ardently practiced them.
Reducing Exposures To Mercury, Sharon P. Mclelland
Reducing Exposures To Mercury, Sharon P. Mclelland
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
Mercury is an environmental contaminant affecting neurological development, the immune system and cardiac health. Air emissions become environmental pollutants impacting air, water and land. Consumption of mercury-contaminated fish can create public health concerns, primarily to pregnant women and their fetuses. New York State's public policy response addresses incidental exposures with annual fish advisories and restrictions on mercury emissions and products sold or used. Additional public policy responses to the mercury problem can include: direct notification of advisories to fish consumers, enhanced public health notification of benefits and risks of consuming fish, labeling requirements on mercury-containing products, and expanded scientific data …
Environmental Education And A Proposal For Its Implementation In Public Schools, Casey Putnam
Environmental Education And A Proposal For Its Implementation In Public Schools, Casey Putnam
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
Human impact on nature has led to global environmental destruction and degradation. Young people are not environmentally knowledgeable, and they are not receiving the type of instruction they need in order to be environmentally literate citizens. In order to repair some of the damage that has been done and to diminish future impact, environmental education must be thoroughly and thoughtfully incorporated into people's lives.
Environmental education has existed, in various forms, for nearly a century as, at best, a supplement to "real education." Rather than being a fringe subject, environmental education warrants attention in American education that is equal to …
Northwood School: The Survival Story Of An Educational Jewel In The Adirondacks, Perry Babcock
Northwood School: The Survival Story Of An Educational Jewel In The Adirondacks, Perry Babcock
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
Northwood School is an example of a secondary boarding institution whose history mirrors the many changes in private education over the last one hundred years. As was the case with many of these private institutions, Northwood had to contend with the issue of isolation. The school's remote location caused it to evolve its own regional character. The school struggled financially as a not-for-profit institution that relied on tuition revenues and donations to maintain its stature in the competitive boarding school world. Northwood School also found itself challenged to sustain an educational philosophy when its market share dwindled and athletics became …
Anthropogenic Influences On Avian Life, Past And Present, Within The Adirondack Park, Melodee A. Decoteau
Anthropogenic Influences On Avian Life, Past And Present, Within The Adirondack Park, Melodee A. Decoteau
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
In the northeastern comer of New York over the last 10,000 years, avian life developed a complex network of niches within the varied ecosystems produced by the retreat of the last glacier. When humans began to dominate the area, beginning around two hundred years ago, avian diversity was compromised. The past and present anthropogenic influences have increasingly intensified the stresses on avian life in the park. If avian diversity is to be preserved, human factions must work together to decrease that stress. The establishment of the Adirondack Park and hunting seasons as well as restrictions on pesticide use have directly …
