Choosing Between Remote I/O Versus Staging In Distributed Environments, Ibrahim Hakki Suslu Jan 2010

Choosing Between Remote I/O Versus Staging In Distributed Environments, Ibrahim Hakki Suslu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Today, scientifi_x000C_c applications and experiments have become increasingly complex and more demanding in terms of their computational and data requirements. The amount of data generated and used has grown at a very rapid rate. As tens or hundreds of terabytes of data for a single application is very common today; petabytes and even exabytes of data will be very common in a few years. One of the major challenges in distributed computing environments is how to access these large datasets remotely over the network. Data staging and remote I/O are the most widely used data access methods for distributed applications. …

Upland Nesting Waterfowl Population Responses To Predator Reduction In North Dakota, Matthew R. Pieron Jan 2010

Upland Nesting Waterfowl Population Responses To Predator Reduction In North Dakota, Matthew R. Pieron

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Population growth for mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), and presumably other upland nesting ducks, in the Prairie Pothole Region is most sensitive to nest success, and nest success is most strongly influenced by predation. I evaluated the efficacy of reducing predator populations to improve nest success and increase local breeding populations of upland nesting ducks on township-sized (93.2 km2) management units in eastern North Dakota, USA, during 2005−2008. I also examined potential territorial limitations on local population growth for mallards. Trappers annually removed an average of 245 predators per trapped site. I monitored 7,489 nests on 7 trapped and 5 nontrapped sites, …

Subgroups Of The Torelli Group, Leah R. Childers Jan 2010

Subgroups Of The Torelli Group, Leah R. Childers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Let Mod(Sg) be the mapping class group of an orientable surface of genus g, Sg. The action of Mod(Sg) on the homology of Sg induces the well-known symplectic representation:

Mod(Sg) ---> Sp(2g, Z).
The kernel of this representation is called the Torelli group, I(Sg).

We will study two subgroups of I(Sg). First we will look at the subgroup generated by all SIP-maps, SIP(Sg). We will show SIP(Sg) is not I(Sg) and is in fact an infinite index subgroup of I(Sg). We will also classify which SIP-maps are in the kernel of the Johnson homomorphism and Birman-Craggs-Johnson homomorphism.

Then we will …

Cross-Talk-Free Dual-Color Fluorescence Cross-Correlation Spectroscopy For High-Throughtput Screening, Wonbae Lee Jan 2010

Cross-Talk-Free Dual-Color Fluorescence Cross-Correlation Spectroscopy For High-Throughtput Screening, Wonbae Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

High throughput processing of chemical/biochemical information is critical in many areas, such as genome sequencing, drug discovery and clinical diagnostics. Integral to collecting information at high rates with the necessary throughput is the development of systems that can not only monitor the results with high precision and accuracy, but also prepare and process samples prior to the analytical measurement. To achieve the required throughput, we have conducted work directed toward developing a system that provides detection sensitivity at the single-molecule detection (SMD) level. The research was first focused on the development of a sensitive strategy for the detection of proteins …

Analysis And Modeling Of Hurricane Impacts On A Coastal Louisiana Lake Bottom, Angelina Freeman Jan 2010

Analysis And Modeling Of Hurricane Impacts On A Coastal Louisiana Lake Bottom, Angelina Freeman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Tropical cyclone impacts on wetland, terrestrial, and shelf systems have been previously studied and reasonably delineated, but little is known about the response of coastal lakes to storm events. For the first time, tropical cyclone impacts on a shallow coastal lake in the Louisiana coastal plain have been studied using direct lines of evidence and numerical modeling. Using side-scan sonar, CHIRP subbottom and echo sounder bathymetric profiles, the lake bottom and shallow subsurface of Sister Lake was imaged pre- and post-Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to provide a geologic framework for assessing the effects of these storms. Box cores were collected …

Chemistry Of Rhenium(I) Tricarbonyl Complexes Of Biomedical Relevance, Theshini Perera Jan 2010

Chemistry Of Rhenium(I) Tricarbonyl Complexes Of Biomedical Relevance, Theshini Perera

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

fac-[ReI(CO)3L]n complexes serve as models for short-lived fac-[99mTcI(CO)3L] imaging tracers. Dangling groups on L, needed to achieve desirable biodistribution, complicate the NMR spectra, which are not readily understood. In fac-[ReI(CO)3L]+ with less complicated L, NH groups (exo-NH) projecting toward the L face sometimes showed an upfield shift attributable to steric shielding of the exo-NH group from the solvent by the chelate rings. To investigate whether exo-NH groups in six-membered rings exhibit the same effect and whether the …

A Study Of The Elongation Of Fibrils Of The Alzheimer's Amyloid Beta Protein With A Coarse-Grained Force Field, Ana Rojas Jan 2010

A Study Of The Elongation Of Fibrils Of The Alzheimer's Amyloid Beta Protein With A Coarse-Grained Force Field, Ana Rojas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a brain disorder named after the German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer, who first described the disease in 1906. AD is a form of dementia, characterized by impairment of memory and other intellectual abilities, caused by the loss of neurons and synapses (the structures that permit communication between neurons) in certain regions of the brain. Although the mechanism by which neurons are affected is not yet well understood, research points to a small protein, the beta-amyloid peptide (Abeta), as the first suspect. Ab chains are present in the brains of healthy individuals, but in AD patients, they associate …

Koszul Duality For Multigraded Algebras, Fareed Hawwa Jan 2010

Koszul Duality For Multigraded Algebras, Fareed Hawwa

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Classical Koszul duality sets up an adjoint pair of functors establishing an equivalence of categories. The equivalence is between the bounded derived category of complexes of graded modules over a graded algebra and the bounded derived category of complexes of graded modules over the quadratic dual graded algebra. This duality can be extended in many ways. We consider here two extensions: first we wish to allow a multigraded algebra, meaning that the algebra can be graded by any abelian group (not just the integers). Second, we will allow filtered algebras. In fact we are considering filtered quadratic algebras with an …

Dimer Models For Knot Polynomials, Moshe Cohen Jan 2010

Dimer Models For Knot Polynomials, Moshe Cohen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A dimer model consists of all perfect matchings on a (bipartite) weighted signed graph, where the product of the signed weights of each perfect matching is summed to obtain an invariant. In this paper, the construction of such a graph from a knot diagram is given to obtain the Alexander polynomial. This is further extended to a more complicated graph to obtain the twisted Alexander polynomial, which involved "twisting" by a representation. The space of all representations of a given knot complement into the general linear group of a fixed size can be described by the same graph. This work …

Integration Of Paleotempestology With Coastal Risk And Vulnerability Assessment: Case Studies From The Dominican Republic And Nicaragua, Devyani Kar Jan 2010

Integration Of Paleotempestology With Coastal Risk And Vulnerability Assessment: Case Studies From The Dominican Republic And Nicaragua, Devyani Kar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hurricanes account for a significant portion of damages, injuries, and fatalities in the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic has had 3 major hurricane strikes in this century resulting in loss of lives for thousands of people and billions of US $ in economic loss. Major hurricanes had been relatively infrequent in north-eastern Nicaragua’s modern history until Hurricane Felix, a Category 5 storm, made landfall in the north-east in 2007. It caused 130 confirmed deaths and brought devastation to many villages. These events highlight a need for re-evaluation of hurricane risk based on a more comprehensive and long-term hurricane history. Using paleotempestological …

Data Transfer Scheduling With Advance Reservation And Provisioning, Mehmet Balman Jan 2010

Data Transfer Scheduling With Advance Reservation And Provisioning, Mehmet Balman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Over the years, scientific applications have become more complex and more data intensive. Although through the use of distributed resources the institutions and organizations gain access to the resources needed for their large-scale applications, complex middleware is required to orchestrate the use of these storage and network resources between collaborating parties, and to manage the end-to-end processing of data. We present a new data scheduling paradigm with advance reservation and provisioning. Our methodology provides a basis for provisioning end-to-end high performance data transfers which require integration between system, storage and network resources, and coordination between reservation managers and data transfer …

Augmented Breast Tumor Classification By Perfusion Analysis, Bruce Yu-Sun Lin Jan 2010

Augmented Breast Tumor Classification By Perfusion Analysis, Bruce Yu-Sun Lin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Magnetic resonance and computed tomography imaging aid in the diagnosis and analysis of pathologic conditions. Blood flow, or perfusion, through a region of tissue can be computed from a time series of contrast-enhanced images. Perfusion is an important set of physiological parameters that reflect angiogenesis. In cancer, heightened angiogenesis is a key process in the growth and spread of tumorous masses. An automatic classification technique using recovered perfusion may prove to be a highly accurate diagnostic tool. Such a classification system would supplement existing histopathological tests, and help physicians to choose the most optimal treatment protocol. Perfusion is obtained through …

Dissolution Of Chitosan In Ionic Liquids For Acylation Chemistry And Formation Of Cellulose-Chitosan Blends, Cristina Stefanescu Jan 2010

Dissolution Of Chitosan In Ionic Liquids For Acylation Chemistry And Formation Of Cellulose-Chitosan Blends, Cristina Stefanescu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dissolution of chitosan in ionic liquids was accomplished. It has been shown that 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (BMIMAc) is a better solvent than 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl). Dissolution of chitosan in BMIMCl required a prior regeneration of chitosan from 1% acetic acid solution. In the case of BMIMAc, both dried chitosan and regenerated chitosan from acetic acid solution have been dissolved in a relatively short amount of time. While concentrations up to 2 wt% of chitosan in BMIMCl could be obtained, concentrations of 10 wt % of chitosan in BMIMAc were realized. Homogeneous phthalation and benzoylation of chitosan were achieved in these ionic …

Iron (Iii) Oxide And Copper (Ii) Oxide Mediated Formation Of Pcdd/Fs From Thermal Degradation Of 2-Mcp And 1,2-Dcbz, Shadrack Kirwa Nganai Jan 2010

Iron (Iii) Oxide And Copper (Ii) Oxide Mediated Formation Of Pcdd/Fs From Thermal Degradation Of 2-Mcp And 1,2-Dcbz, Shadrack Kirwa Nganai

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) which occurs inexorably from most thermal and combustion processes constitutes a major toxic component of environmental pollutants. Generally, it is well established that transition metal-mediated reactions account for the majority of PCDD/F emissions from combustion sources. Specifically, both copper and iron ions, which occur abundantly in combustion generated particulate matter, are considered probably the most active in promoting PCDD/F formation typically in the low temperature post-combustion zone and flue gas pollution control devices. It has also been demonstrated that chlorinated phenols are key intermediates in essentially all pathways of PCDD/F formation. Chlorinated benzenes …

Quantifying The Impact Of Data Quality On Searches For Gravitational Waves From Binary Coalescing Systems With Ligo, Jacob Peter Slutsky Jan 2010

Quantifying The Impact Of Data Quality On Searches For Gravitational Waves From Binary Coalescing Systems With Ligo, Jacob Peter Slutsky

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Gravitational waves are ripples in space-time itself, predicted by Einstein's General theory of relativity, which propagate at the speed of light and are not scattered or extinguished by passing through matter almost at all. In particular, the gravitational waves from the coalescences of binary systems of compact objects, such as neutron stars and black holes, are exciting prospects for observation. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory experiment intends to make the _x000C_first direct measurement of gravitational waves, and use the results to uncover new astrophysics. These observations will not be limited by extinction from dust and gas, and will probe astrophysical …

Primes Of The Form X² + Ny² In Function Fields, Piotr Maciak Jan 2010

Primes Of The Form X² + Ny² In Function Fields, Piotr Maciak

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Let n be a square-free polynomial over F_q, where q is an odd prime power. In this work, we determine which irreducible polynomials p in F_q[x] can be represented in the form X^2+nY^2 with X, Y in F_q[x]. We restrict ourselves to the case where X^2+nY^2 is anisotropic at infinity. As in the classical case over Z, the representability of p by the quadratic form X^2+nY^2 is governed by conditions coming from class field theory. A necessary and almost sufficient condition is that the ideal generated by p splits completely in the Hilbert class field H of K=F_q(x,sqrt(-n)) for the …

Ferromagnetism And Transport In Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors, Abdolmadjid Nili Jan 2010

Ferromagnetism And Transport In Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors, Abdolmadjid Nili

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the study of ferromagnetism in Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors. To study these strongly correlated electronic systems, two non- perturbative techniques are used: the Dynamical Mean Field Approximation (DMFA) and the Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA). The model used for Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors (DMS) incorporates the strong spin-orbit couplings of the carrier holes as found in most III-V semiconductors doped with manganese such as Ga1-xMnxAs. Calculated within the DMFA, the spin-orbit coupling effects give rise to various interesting physics, primarily the anisotropic behavior of the impurity band that affect the charge transport properties in the …

Quantum Light For Quantum Technologies, William Nicholas Plick Jan 2010

Quantum Light For Quantum Technologies, William Nicholas Plick

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis we will theoretically investigate three potentially useful physical systems, after first developing the theoretical framework necessary for studying them. First, we will study the multiphoton absorption properties of maximally path entangled number (N00N) states. This is directly relevant to quantum lithography, and beating the Rayleigh diffraction limit. Next, we will develop a new scheme for quantum interferometry: dubbed coherent-light boosted super-sensitive quantum interferometry, which has the potential to reach below the shot noise limit for high photon fluxes, and requires no esoteric detection protocol, or technological elements that have yet to be developed. Finally we propose a …

Computer Simulation Of Ion-Induced Nucleation In The Presence Of Single Ions And Ion Pairs, Samuel Keasler Jan 2010

Computer Simulation Of Ion-Induced Nucleation In The Presence Of Single Ions And Ion Pairs, Samuel Keasler

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Atmospheric aerosol particles play an important role in climate and human health. Despite their importance, the mechanisms of their formation are still poorly understood. Ion-induced nucleation may play a role in the process, but details are lacking about how the nucleation rate depends on the size, charge, and number of ions in the cluster. In order to better understand the role that ions might play in new particle formation, we have performed a series of AVUS-HR simulations of the water nucleation in the presence of both single ions and ion pairs. These simulations have shown that the location of the …

Studies Of Small Systems In Quantum Information, Sai Vinjanampathy Jan 2010

Studies Of Small Systems In Quantum Information, Sai Vinjanampathy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

I study two topics in quantum information theory from the perspective of algebra and geometry. The first relates to exploring the geometry of unitary operators for small quantum systems, specifically three-level systems. Such an understanding of the space over which quantum systems evolve is central to understanding the detailed dynamics of quantum systems and to understand the correlation properties of subsystems that compose a given quantum system. The geometry of unitary operators also allows for the calculation of path-dependent phases called geometric phases. These geometric phases are central to understanding a variety of experiments. I present a general technique, called …

Investigations Of Structure / Property Interrelationships Of Organic Thin Films Using Scanning Probe Microscopy And Nanolithography, Zorabel Mallorca Lejeune Jan 2010

Investigations Of Structure / Property Interrelationships Of Organic Thin Films Using Scanning Probe Microscopy And Nanolithography, Zorabel Mallorca Lejeune

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Studies of the surface assembly and molecular organization of organic thin films were studied using scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and scanning probe lithography (SPL). Systems of organic thin films such as n-alkanethiols and pyridyl functionalized porphyrins were characterized at the molecular level, and measurements of the conductive properties of polythiophenes containing in-chain cobaltabisdicarbollides were accomplished. Understanding the self-organization and mechanisms of self-assembly of organic molecules provides fundamental insight for structure/property interrelationships. Investigations of the surface assembly of 5,10-diphenyl-15,20-di-pyridin-4-yl-porphyrin (DPP) on Au(111) were done using SPL methods of nanoshaving and nanografting. Automated computer designs were developed for nanofabrication to provide local …

Improving Software Quality Using An Ontology-Based Approach, Yixin Luo Jan 2010

Improving Software Quality Using An Ontology-Based Approach, Yixin Luo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ensuring quality in software development is a challenging process. The concepts of anti-pattern and bad code smells utilize the knowledge of reoccurring problems to improve the quality of current and future software development. Anti-patterns describe recurring bad design solutions while bad code smells describe source code that is error-free but difficult to understand and maintain. Code refactoring aims to remove bad code smells without changing a program’s functionality while improving program quality. There are metrics-based tools to detect a few bad code smells from source code; however, the knowledge and understanding of these indicators of low quality software are still …

Microfluidic Devices Interfaced To Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry For Proteomics, Jeonghoon Lee Jan 2010

Microfluidic Devices Interfaced To Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry For Proteomics, Jeonghoon Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Microfluidic interfaces were developed for off-line matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI). Microfluidic interfaces allow samples to be manipulated on-chip and deposited onto a MALDI target plate for analysis. For this research, microfluidic culturing devices and automated digestion and deposition microfluidic chip platforms were developed for the identification of proteins. The microfluidic chip components were fabricated on a poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, wafer using the hot embossing method and a molding tool with structures prepared via micromilling. One of the most important components of the chip system was a trypsin microreactor. An open channel microreactor was constructed in a 100 µm …

Modeling Thermal Phenomena And Searching For New Thermally Induced Monitor Signals In Large Sale Gravitational Wave Detectors, Rupal Shashikant Amin Jan 2010

Modeling Thermal Phenomena And Searching For New Thermally Induced Monitor Signals In Large Sale Gravitational Wave Detectors, Rupal Shashikant Amin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) array’s 4 km detectors have transitioned from an initial configuration (iLIGO) to an enhanced configuration (eLIGO) [1]. Both configurations relied on high circulating laser powers to achieve sensitivity goals between 150 Hz and 8 kHz. These power levels were sufficient to induce thermally driven focal affects in the primary optics. Since the detectors were designed to achieve maximum sensitivity when laser light was optimally coupled (mode matched) into the antenna, small deviations in focal parameters influenced performance. A laser based thermal compensation system (TCS) was installed for use in both configurations to counteract excessive …

Orthogonal Grassmannians And Hermitian K-Theory In A¹-Homotopy Theory Of Schemes, Girja Shanker Tripathi Jan 2010

Orthogonal Grassmannians And Hermitian K-Theory In A¹-Homotopy Theory Of Schemes, Girja Shanker Tripathi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work we prove that the hermitian K-theory is geometrically representable in the A^1 -homotopy category of smooth schemes over a field. We also study in detail a realization functor from the A^1 -homotopy category of smooth schemes over the field R of real numbers to the category of topological spaces. This functor is determined by taking the real points of a smooth R-scheme. There is another realization functor induced by taking the complex points with a similar description although we have not discussed this other functor in this dissertation. Using these realization functors we have concluded in brief …

Optimal Control And Nonlinear Programming, Qingxia Li Jan 2010

Optimal Control And Nonlinear Programming, Qingxia Li

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis, we have two distinct but related subjects: optimal control and nonlinear programming. In the first part of this thesis, we prove that the value function, propagated from initial or terminal costs, and constraints, in the form of a differential equation, satisfy a subgradient form of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in which the Hamiltonian is measurable with respect to time. In the second part of this thesis, we first construct a concrete example to demonstrate conjugate duality theory in vector optimization as developed by Tanino. We also define the normal cones corresponding to Tanino's concept of the subgradient of …

Model Based Analysis Of Some High Speed Network Issues, Suman Kumar Jan 2010

Model Based Analysis Of Some High Speed Network Issues, Suman Kumar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The study of complex problems in science and engineering today typically involves large scale data, huge number of large-scale scientific breakthroughs critically depends on large multi-disciplinary and geographically-dispersed research teams, where the high speed network becomes the integral part. To serve the ongoing bandwidth requirement and scalability of these networks, there has been a continuous evolution of different TCPs for high speed networks. Testing these protocols on a real network would be expensive, time consuming and more over not easily available to the researchers worldwide. Network simulation is well accepted and widely used method for performance evaluation, it is well …

Spatial Analyses Of Pedosphere Carbon Stock And Sequestration Potential In Louisiana's Watersheds, Biao Zhong Jan 2010

Spatial Analyses Of Pedosphere Carbon Stock And Sequestration Potential In Louisiana's Watersheds, Biao Zhong

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation research aimed to quantify current soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks across Louisiana’s landscape, examine the spatial relationships between SOC and terrain factors at the watershed and river basin scales, and predict SOC changes in surface soils during future climate change. Using Louisiana as an example, a spatially-explicit modeling framework was developed that is conducive to watershed-scale prediction of soil carbon stock and change. SOC densities at the watershed scale were estimated using the USDA NRCS Soil Geographic Database (STATSGO). Louisiana watersheds and National Land Cover Database (NLCD) were used to aggregate total soil carbon and estimate average soil …

Pharmaceutical Compounds In Treatment Wetlands: Potential Removal And Effects On Microbial Processes, Jeremy Landon Conkle Jan 2010

Pharmaceutical Compounds In Treatment Wetlands: Potential Removal And Effects On Microbial Processes, Jeremy Landon Conkle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

active compounds (PhACs) have been detected in the aquatic environment as a result of loading from various sources. In Louisiana, USA, many municipalities treat wastewater using natural systems, such as lagoons and wetlands, rather than using conventional wastewater treatment technologies and may discharge PhACs into the environment. These treatment systems are not designed to remove PhACs from wastewater, nor is it currently a regulatory requirement. Research on the fate of PhACs in the environment is needed to understand impacts on Louisiana’s important coastal system. Wastewater sampling for PhACs at the Mandeville, LA wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) determined that this system …

Hamilton-Jacobi Theory For Optimal Control Problems On Stratified Domains, Richard Charles Barnard Jan 2010

Hamilton-Jacobi Theory For Optimal Control Problems On Stratified Domains, Richard Charles Barnard

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis studies optimal control problems on stratified domains. We first establish a known proximal Hamilton-Jacobi characterization of the value function for problems with Lipschitz dynamics. This background gives the motivation for our results for systems over stratified domains, which is a system with non-Lipschitz dynamics that were introduced by Bressan and Hong. We provide an example that shows their attempt to derive a Hamilton-Jacobi characterization of the value function is incorrect, and discuss the nature of their error. A new construction of a multifunction is introduced that possesses properties similar to those of a Lipschitz multifunction, and is used …
