Data

The Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM) at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has generated Shoreline Situation Reports (SSRs) for coastal localities in the state of Maryland. This effort compliments a parallel effort in Virginia by the same group. SSRs were developed by VIMS in the 1970s for Virginia and have been the foundation for shoreline management planning in Tidewater Virginia ever since. CCRM has developed new protocols for collecting, disseminating, and reporting data relevant to shoreline management issues using state of the art mapping and remote sensing techniques. New SSRs are being generated on a county by …

Gis Data: Essex County And The Town Of Tappahannock Shoreline Situation Report, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Sharon Dewing, J. B. Glover, Carl Hershner, Tamia Rudnicky, Dan Schatt, Kevin Skunda

Data

The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Situation Reports are based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. This assessment characterizes conditions in the shorezone observed from a small boat moving along the shoreline. Handheld GPS units record data observations in the field. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions:

  1. the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use

  2. the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection

  3. the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes.

Three GIS coverages are generated from the collection technique. The essex_lubc coverage are features …

The Shoreline Management Model is a GIS spatial model that determines appropriate shoreline best management practices using available spatial data and decision tree logic. Available shoreline conditions used in the model include the presence or absence of tidal marshes, beaches, and forested riparian buffers, bank vegetation cover, bank height, wave exposure (fetch), nearshore water depth, and proximity of coastal development to the shoreline. The model output for shoreline best management practices is displayed in the locality Comprehensive Map Viewer. One GIS shapefile is developed that describes two arcs or lines representing practices in the upland area and practices at the …

Supplemental Data: Environmental Survey Of Potential Sand Resource Sites Offshore Delaware And Maryland, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science

Data

The APR file "mdde_habitat" and the directories "gisdata", "images", and "temp" together are an appendix to Part 1, "Benthic Habit Mapping and Resource Evaluation of Potential Sand Mining Areas Offshore Maryland and Delaware, 1998-1999" that was created with and must be read with "ArcView" (tm) software with the "Spatial Analyst" extension. To view the project, start the ArcView program and open the project file, mmde-habitat.apr, when prompted. The project should enable the necessary extensions. It is a very large file and may take 5 to 10 minutes to load.

Bathymetric Line Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science, Sav Program, Chesapeake Bay Program Jan 1997

Bathymetric Line Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science, Sav Program, Chesapeake Bay Program

Data

This is a GIS layer showing the 1- and -2-meter low water contours that were created in support of the SAV (Submerged Aquatic Vegetation) goals by the Chesapeake Bay Program.

The file was originally created in the mid – 1990s in ArcInfo as a coverage and then later converted to a shapefile. In 2010 the Shoreline Studies Program was given permission to use the data and convert it a KML format that can be viewed in Google earth.

This bathymetric contours file covers the Chesapeake bay in Maryland and Virginia.
