Macrocyclic Antibiotics As Separation Agents, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Macrocyclic antibiotics having ring structures with at least 10 members act as separation agents in crystallization, precipitation, filtration, electrophoresis and chromatography. The macrocyclic antibiotics include ansamacrolides, macrolides, macrocyclic peptides, polyenes and derivatives thereof. The process has been found to be especially advantageous for separation of optical isomers by electrophoresis and chromatography.

Effect Of Interfacial Mobility On Flexural Strength And Fracture Toughness Of Glass/Epoxy Laminates, T. W. H. Wang, Frank D. Blum, Lokeswarappa R. Dharani

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mechanical testing and surface fractography were used to characterize the fracture of E-glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites as a function of the silane coupling agent used. gamma-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) and delta-aminobutyltriethoxysilane (ABS) were used because these have been shown to have different interfacial mobilities at multilayer coverage. The values of the properties studied generally increased from untreated c, as determined from a Mode I translaminar fracture toughness tests, for the untreated composites (10.5 ± 0.4 kJ/m2) was lower than that for the ABS-treated composites (14.3 ± 2.1 kJ/m2) which was lower than that for the APS-treated composites (17.1 ± 2.4 kJ/m2). …

Contour Temperature Programmed Desorption For Monitoring Multiple Chemical Reaction Products, Charles C. Chusuei, J. V. De La Peña, John A. Schreifels

A simple method for obtaining a comprehensive overview of major compounds desorbing from the surface during temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments is outlined. Standard commercially available equipment is used to perform the experiment. The method is particularly valuable when high molecular mass compounds are being studied. The acquisition of contour temperature programmed desorption (CTPD) spectra, sampling 50-dalton mass ranges at a time in the thermal desorption experiments, is described and demonstrated for the interaction of benzotriazole adsorbed on a Ni(111) surface. Conventional two-dimensional TPD spectra can be extracted from the CTPD by taking vertical slices of the contour.

The rhombohedral Pr2Fe17Hx compounds with the Th2Zn17 structure have been prepared for x =0-5. Their lattice parameters and Curie temperatures have been determined from powder x-ray diffraction and thermomagnetic measurements, respectively, and their Mössbauer spectra have been measured between 4.2 and 295 K. The Mössbauer spectra for x=0, 1, and 2, obtained between 4.2 and 295 K, and those of Pr2Fe17H3, obtained above 90 K, have been analyzed with a seven sextet model, indicative of a basal magnetization in these compounds. The Mössbauer spectra of Pr …

The crystal structure of the mixed azine C15H9F5N2O is described. The molecule has a high degree of planarity. The two phenyl rings deviate from perfect planarity by less than 2° and the dihedral angles between the ipso-C atoms and the azine bridge also show a minute deviation from planarity of less than 2°. The only dihedral angle that indicates any significant twisting is the dihedral angle about the azine bridge [C1-N1-N2-C8 174.8 (6)°], and even this one is relatively small. Face-to-face arene-arene contacts are the dominant intermolecular interactions. There are double …

We present experimental and theoretical findings on the geometry of polycrystalline para hexaphenyl via Raman scattering. The planarity of the molecule is affected by hydrostatic pressure and temperature. Our studies indicate that the potential energy curve which governs the torsional motion between neighboring phenyl rings is "W" shaped. We determine the activation energy to promote the molecule from a nonplanar to a planar state to be 0.04 eV, in good agreement with our quantum chemical calculations. From the relative intensities of the 1280cm-1 to the 1220cm-1 Raman modes we show that high pressure planarizes the molecules, modifying the …

The equiatomic FeAl alloy has been modified by partial substitution of Mn for Fe, and its magnetic and structural properties investigated by neutron diffraction (ND), x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), and SQUID magnetometry both for the ordered (B2) and disordered states. The unit cell volume is measured to increase linearly with Mn concentration. XAFS measurements indicate local structural displacements occur at the Mn sites in both ordered and disordered states that may act to frustrate long-range magnetic order (LRMO). Although MS and ND show no evidence of LRMO, SQUID magnetometry indicates an induced movement in the …

The La0.2Sr0.8Cu1-xFexO 3-δ perovskites are important because they are mixed electron and oxygen anion conductors and thus are able to serve as dense oxygen separation membranes. In order to better understand the mechanism for this separation a Mössbauer spectral study has been carried out to determine the ratio of iron(III) to iron(IV) in these mixed valent compounds. The Mössbauer spectra of La0.2Sr0.8Cu0.2Fe0.8O 3-δ obtained between 4.2 and 78 K reveal that its Néel temperature is ~75 K and the two well-resolved magnetic sextets observed …

In Situ Measurement Of The Aerosol Size Distribution In Stratospheric Solid Rocket Motor Exhaust Plumes, Martin N. Ross, Philip D. Whitefield, Donald E. Hagen, Alfred R. Hopkins

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The concentration and size distribution of aerosol in the stratospheric exhaust plumes of two Space Shuttle rockets and one Titan IV rocket were measured using a two component aerosol sampling system carried aboard a WB‐57F aircraft. Aerosol size distribution in the 0.01 µm to 4 µm diameter size range was measured using a two component sampling system. The measured distributions display a trimodal form with modes near 0.005 µm, 0.09 µm, and 2.03 µm and are used to infer the relative mass fractionation among the three modes. While the smallest mode has been estimated to contain as much as 10% …

Thermal Characterization Of Pmma Thin Films On Silica Using Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Crystal E. Porter, Frank D. Blum Jan 1999

Thermal Characterization Of Pmma Thin Films On Silica Using Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Crystal E. Porter, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The number of studies of thin polymer films has increased over recent years as technological processes incorporate the use of nanomaterials. An enhanced understanding of these films would enable us to predict bound-polymer behavior and thus improve the efficiency of processes and the quality of products. This is especially true as the thickness of the films approach molecular dimensions. The glass transition temperature of a polymer is one of the most important properties for characterization because it indicates how the polymer might perform macroscopically. when a polymer is confined, such as one the surface of a substrate, its behavior is …

Dynamics Of Acrylic Coupling Agents At Interfaces Of Composites, Hyoryoon Jo, Frank D. Blum Jan 1999

Dynamics Of Acrylic Coupling Agents At Interfaces Of Composites, Hyoryoon Jo, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most applications of polymers involve composites, wherein a polymer is used in conjunction with another material, typically a solid fiber or filler. A coupling agent can enhance the adhesion between a polymer matrix and an inorganic filler. Organofunctional silanes, RSiX are often used as coupling agents. The methoxy or ethoxy group, X, can typically be hydrolyzed with water and an acid or a base catalyst in a protic solvent. The silanol groups of a hydrolyzed coupling agent can condense with other silanol groups from a glass surface, while the alkyl group, R, blends physically or bonds chemically to the polymer …
