The late Cenozoic deposits of southeastern Virginia represent a wide variety of depositional environments and record numerous marine transgressions. The formations range in age from Miocene to Holocene. This fieldguide provides an opportunity to visit and sample highly fossilferous marine bay and fluvial-estuarine sediments exposed in river bluffs and borrow pits on the York-James Peninsula.

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Soil and Water Conservation, has identified as one of its major goals the systematic study of hydrodynamic processes that affect recreational, shoreline and benthic resources in the coastal zone of the Commonwealth. In pursuit of that goal, a long-term study of the wave climate in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay was initiated in 1988 with support from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration through the Coastal Zone Management Program administered by the Virginia Council on the Environment (Grant Ho. This is the second of two reports concerning the resources of sand in the lower portions of Chesapeake Bay. The first, Geotechnical and Benthic Evaluation of Sand Resources in the Lower Chesapeake Bay (Kimball and others, 1989), presents a study of the resources in Thimble Shoal. The present work is a study of the area known as Tail of the Horseshoe which is just east of Thimble Shoal (Figure 1). The deposits of sand described in this report will be of most interest to the communities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

This study has as its primary purpose an examination of how compensatory mitigation has worked as a wetlands management tool to date in Virginia (i.e. how well theory has been put into practice). Our approach was to look at the overall use of compensation in coastal Virginia based on regulatory records and to examine as many existing created wetlands as possible within the tidal area of the state to determine how closely these projects have come, collectively, to fulfilling the compensatory goal of wetland replacement. The frequency and distribution of these specimens were analysed and the electrophoretic patterns of soluble eye-lens proteins were determined. This cataract is not of parasitic origin and was rare in specimens from the coastal area. In the lagunar region it occurs mainly in specimens of the River Baguacu from April to November.

The Elizabeth River is a highly industrialized waterway that divides the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth at its confluence with the lower Chesapeake Bay. It is home to the largest Naval base on the East Coast, numerous ship repair facilities, bulk and containerized cargo facilities, industrial and urban activities and wood creosoting (preserving) operations (all except one have been abandoned). This degree of industrialization has resulted in the pollution of the river, with high concentrations of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH, Bieri et al., 1986). Water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen concentrations were monitored at two sites in the Machipongo River system in early summer of 1989 and late summer of 1990. The two study sites have been designated as "Willis Wharf" and "Quinby." The Machipongo River system and the two sampling locations are shown in Figure 1.
