The explorers and naturalists who first visited Antarctica were struck by the large numbers of whales, seals and seabirds in such a harsh environment (summarized in Everson, 1977). Scientific expeditions in the twentieth century confirmed these observations, and also established that an even greater abundance of many different trophic levels occurred at the ice edge. Hart (1942) noted that phytoplankton were more abundant near the ice edge mad suggested that there was a distinct ice-edge flora, and Marr (1962) noted that krill (Euphausia superba) were concentrated at the interface between pack ice and open water. Routh (1949) observed …

Ancient Channels Of The Susquehanna River Beneath Chesapeake Bay And The Delmarva Peninsula, Steven M. Colman, Jeffrey P. Halka, C. Hobbs, Robert B. Mixon, David S. Foster
VIMS Articles
Three generations of the ancestral Susquehanna River system have been mapped beneath Chesapeake Bay and the southern Delmarva Peninsula. Closely spaced seismic reflection profiles in the bay and boreholes in the bay and on the southern Delmarva Peninsula allow detailed reconstruction of each paleochannel system. The channel systems were formed during glacial low sea-level stands, and each contains a channel-fill sequence that records the subsequent transgression. The trunk channels of each system are 2 to 4 km wide and are incised 30 to SO m into underlying strata; they have irregular longitudinal profiles and very low gradients within the Chesapeake …

Pliocene And Pleistocene Depositional Environments On The York-James Peninsula, Virginia; A Field Guidebook, Gerald H. Johnson, Carl H. Hobbs Iii
Reports
The late Cenozoic deposits of southeastern Virginia represent a wide variety of depositional environments and record numerous marine transgressions. The formations range in age from Miocene to Holocene. This fieldguide provides an opportunity to visit and sample highly fossilferous marine bay and fluvial-estuarine sediments exposed in river bluffs and borrow pits on the York-James Peninsula.

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Soil and Water Conservation, has identified as one of its major goals the systematic study of hydrodynamic processes that affect recreational, shoreline and benthic resources in the coastal zone of the Commonwealth. In pursuit of that goal, a long-term study of the wave climate in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay was initiated in 1988 with support from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration through the Coastal Zone Management Program administered by the Virginia Council on the Environment (Grant Ho. HA88AA-D-CZ092). Past …

Geological And Benthic Evaluation Of Sand Resources In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Report 2, Tail Of The Horseshoe : Final Report V.1, Carl C. Hobbs Iii, Linda C. Schaffner
Reports
This is the second of two reports concerning the resources of sand in the lower portions of Chesapeake Bay. The first, Geotechnical and Benthic Evaluation of Sand Resources in the Lower Chesapeake Bay (Kimball and others, 1989), presents a study of the resources in Thimble Shoal. The present work is a study of the area known as Tail of the Horseshoe which is just east of Thimble Shoal (Figure 1). The deposits of sand described in this report will be of most interest to the communities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

A Survey Of Compensatory Mitigation Within The Tidal Wetlands Of Virginia, Thomas A. Barnard, Pamela Mason
A Survey Of Compensatory Mitigation Within The Tidal Wetlands Of Virginia, Thomas A. Barnard, Pamela Mason
Reports
This study has as its primary purpose an examination of how compensatory mitigation has worked as a wetlands management tool to date in Virginia (i.e. how well theory has been put into practice). Our approach was to look at the overall use of compensation in coastal Virginia based on regulatory records and to examine as many existing created wetlands as possible within the tidal area of the state to determine how closely these projects have come, collectively, to fulfilling the compensatory goal of wetland replacement. Secondary objectives includes an examination of the literature regarding wetland compensation concept evaluation and to …

Acoustic Geology Of A Portion Of Virginia's Innermost Continental Shelf, Carl H. Hobbs Iii
Acoustic Geology Of A Portion Of Virginia's Innermost Continental Shelf, Carl H. Hobbs Iii
VIMS Books and Book Chapters
Side-scan sonography of the innermost continental shelf between Cape Henry and the Virginia-North Carolina border depicts a relatively typical inner shelf bottom generally characterized by medium density, meso-scale roughness. Subbottom acoustic protiles depict the stratigraphy as a Tertiary age basement separated from Quatenary-age deposits by a regional, angular(?) unconformity. Holocene-age sediments form a discontinuous layer above another unconformity. The area's topography appears to be a function of the presence of the modern sediments.

Heavy Mineral Concentrations In Sediments Of The Virginia Inner Continental Shelf, C. R. Berquist Jr., C. T. Fischler, L. J. Calliari, Et Al
VIMS Books and Book Chapters
The Virginia Division of Mineral Resources and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science investigated the occurrence of heavy minerals in the offshore sediments of Virginia. We began the project because earlier reconnaissance studies reported high heavy-mineral concentrations from several samples collected off the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Our work confirms the previously reported mineral values and locates additional high concentrations up to 20 nautical miles offshore. Furthermore, we show that potentially economic mineral values are not restricted no surficial sediments, but also are found in the upper 15 to 20 feet of inner continental shelf sediments. Several core samples indicate …
The Dynamics Of Long-Term Mass Transport In Estuaries, John M. Hamrick
The Dynamics Of Long-Term Mass Transport In Estuaries, John M. Hamrick
VIMS Books and Book Chapters
The dynamics of long-term mass transport in estuaries having weakly nonlinear long wave dynamics are investigated. Low pass filtered long-term mass transport equations are derived for conditions of weak and strong vertical stratification. The dynamics of the residual mass transport velocity, or lowest order approximation to the Lagrangian residual velocity, are investigated by perturbation analyses of the hydrodynamics equations. For weak vertical stratification conditions, analytical results showing the influence of topography, the earth's rotation, and channel curvature on the distribution of the residual mass transport velocity field are presented. The calculation of the residual mass transport velocity field from field …

Inner Continental Shelf Benthic Boundary Layer Dynamics And Suspended Sediment Transport, Sung Chan Kim
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
An experiment conducted over the shoreface at Duck, North Carolina in 1985 embraced both fair-weather low energy and storm-related high energy conditions. to differentiate the diffusion and advection processes of suspended sediments under the high energy conditions from those under the low energy conditions, numerical modeling and the analysis of field data are exercised. A simple two-layer eddy viscosity wave-current combined boundary layer model is developed. The modeled characteristics of the boundary layer are incorporated with a diffusion equation to give suspended sediment concentration profiles. A velocity scale related to factors other than turbulent diffusion is formulated, representing the diffusion …
