National critical infrastructure and industrial processes are heavily reliant on automation, monitoring and control technologies, including the widely used Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. The growing interconnection of these systems with corporate networks exposes them to cyber attacks, with several security incidents reported over the last few decades. This study provides a classification scheme for categorising security incidents related to critical infrastructure and industrial control systems. The classification scheme is applied to analyse 242 security incidents on critical infrastructure and industrial control networks, which were reported between 1982 and 2014. Infrastructure projects are complex and technical complexity is dwarfed when compared with the social complexity caused by the interaction of individuals and organisations that participate and influence these projects. Some 6,500 km of CO2 pipelines have been operating for years for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) operations, primarily in the United States. Modelling and analysis of large systems of infrastructure systems carries with it a number of challenges, in particular around the volume of data and the requisite complexity (and thus computing resources required) of models. In this paper we present an integrated land use–transportation model of a region in Sydney, and detail how we integrated an agent-based model of location and transport choice with a traffic micro-simulator. We also discuss both some novel architectures for scalability of modelling as well as for fusion and relevant visualisation of large data sets. We have a particular focus on geospatial infrastructure data visualisation.
