Progenitor scenarios for short gamma-ray bursts (short GRBs) include coalescenses of two neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, which would necessarily be accompanied by the emission of strong gravitational waves. We present a search for these known gravitational-wave signatures in temporal and directional coincidence with 22 GRBs that had sufficient gravitational-wave data available in multiple instruments during LIGO's fifth science run, S5, and Virgo's first science run, VSR1. We find no statistically significant gravitational-wave candidates within a [ - 5, + 1)s window around the trigger time of any GRB. Using the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U-test, we find no …

A Synthetic Approach Toward Novel Β-Lactams, Mohamed Hashim

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

β-lactam antibiotics which is a class by itself, covers a wide range of antibiotics that includes penicillin, penicillin derivatives, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and any antibiotic agent that contains a 2-azetidinone ring.[2] In recent past research it has been established that β-lactams show therapeutic and anticancer activity with low toxicity. [2] It has also been reported by our lab that N-chrysenyl and N-phenanthrenyl 3-acetoxy-4-aryl-2- azetidinone can exhibit potent selective anticancer activity towards prostate, colon, pancreatic cancer and leukemia at low concentrations, all of this was revealed by means of a structure activity study. [2] The goal of our research is the synthesis …

Parameterized Algorithm For 3-Sat, Yi Gao May 2010

Parameterized Algorithm For 3-Sat, Yi Gao

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The SAT problem is the classical NP-complete problem. In the past, many methods have been proposed for solving this problem. We investigated a new method for 3-SAT problem, which is a fixed parameterized algorithm proposed in this paper first. This method uses a fixed parameter k, where k is the number of true values in an assignment for checking whether the formula is satisfied or not. The complexity of our algorithm is O(3k ), which is exponentially independent of the number of variables. Theoretical analysis shows that when k is small, this method has smaller search space and higher speed.

Genotyping Of Tgif Polymorphisms Associated With Schizophrenia And Psychosis, George Vera Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Polymorphisms in Transforming Growth β-Induced Factor (TGIF) have been found to contribute to the risk of development of psychosis and related disorders. Identifying the genes responsible for causing schizophrenia and psychosis will allow for treatment at an earlier stage of development, saving the patient problems, time, and money. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the haplotype of DNA samples obtained from earlier experiments. The DNA samples were collected from people with schizophrenia in Costa Rica, Southern Texas, and Northern Mexico. The samples were tested using 5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Haplotypes …

Trace Analysis Of Volatile Organic Compounds In The Water Of The Arroyo Colorado And The Lower Laguna Madre Utilizing E.P.A.Sw846 Method 8260, Humberto Valdez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) can cause a major environmental concern since they create a hazard to public health and the environment. This study focused on determining concentration of VOCs in Arroyo Colorado waters and the Lower Laguna Madre (LLM) utilizing GC/MS. Little is known on the concentration and composition of VOCs. Toluene was the most common VOC. Concentrations ranged from 0.0010 mg/L to 0.0039 mg/L. Analysis of a sediment pore water sample collected near the mouth of the Arroyo Colorado also detected toluene (0.0023 mg/L). This study showed that VOCs were concentrated near the county boat launch and somewhat downstream. …

A Proposal For The Mechanism Of The Iron-Ascorbate, Fenton, And Hydroxyl Radical-Quenching Series, Jonathan Velasco May 2010

A Proposal For The Mechanism Of The Iron-Ascorbate, Fenton, And Hydroxyl Radical-Quenching Series, Jonathan Velasco

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The Fenton reaction between [Fe(II)] and [HOOH] is observed in the presence of ascorbic acid, [AscH-], during [Fe(III)] and HO• reduction; this is done as part of consecutive redox reactions between [Fe(III)] and [Fe(II)]. As a result, the rate orders with respect to [Fe(III)], ascorbic acid, and [HOOH] are of (approximately) 2nd, 1st, and 4 th order, respectively. However, the rate constants for each reaction in this study show patterns when measured against solution pH; empirically, reactions proceed faster at smaller pH and vice versa.

Identification Of Phosphatases Involved In E2f-Associated Apoptosis, Liza D. Morales Smith May 2010

Identification Of Phosphatases Involved In E2f-Associated Apoptosis, Liza D. Morales Smith

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Retinoblastoma (Rb) is a tumor suppressor protein that controls a critical checkpoint between the G1 phase and the S phase of the cell cycle. Rb is able to suppress cell proliferation by binding to the E2F family of transcription factors, inhibiting its ability to activate transcription of genes necessary for cell cycle progression. Mutations in proteins involved with the Rb/E2F pathway can result in hyper-proliferative cells that overtime can acquire and accumulate additional mutations, which could lead to tumorigenesis. To prevent hyper-proliferation, aberrant cells can be eliminated through apoptosis. E2F can induce apoptosis through two pathways: through transactivation of the …

Dna Staged Self-Assembly At Temperature 1, Nicholas H. Guiterrez May 2010

Dna Staged Self-Assembly At Temperature 1, Nicholas H. Guiterrez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

We introduce alternate temperature 1 self-assembly constructions of an n x n square by efficiently utilizing bins and stages to achieve desirable results. These bins are able to contain a variety of tiles or supertiles, which are then mixed together in a pre-determined sequence of distinct stages. The basic 2D tile assembly model at temperature 1 uses 2n-1 tile types to construct a square. The model only utilizes one bin and occurs all in one stage. We will demonstrate how the use of bins and stages will allow for the construction of these squares more efficiently.

Bifurcations Of Traveling Wave Solutions For An Integrable Equation, Jibin Li, Zhijun Qiao Apr 2010

Bifurcations Of Traveling Wave Solutions For An Integrable Equation, Jibin Li, Zhijun Qiao

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper deals with the following equation mt= 1/2 1/mk xxx− 1/2 1/mk x, which is proposed by Z. J. Qiao J. Math. Phys. 48, 082701 2007 and Qiao and Liu Chaos, Solitons Fractals 41, 587 2009. By adopting the phase analysis method of planar dynamical systems and the theory of the singular traveling wave systems to the traveling wave solutions of the equation, it is shown that for different k, the equation may have infinitely many solitary wave solutions, periodic wave solutions, kink/antikink wave solutions, cusped solitary wave solutions, and breaking loop solutions. We discuss in a detail the …

Nuclear Quantum Effects In The Structure And Lineshapes Of The N2 Near-Edge X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectrum, Shervin Fatehi, Craig P. Schwartz, Richard J. Saykally, David Prendergast

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

We study the relative ability of several models of x-ray absorption spectra to capture the Franck–Condon structure apparent from an experiment on gaseous nitrogen. In doing so, we adopt the Born–Oppenheimer approximation and a constrained density functional theory method for computing the energies of the x-ray-excited molecule. Starting from an otherwise classical model for the spectrum, we systematically introduce more realistic physics, first by substituting the quantum mechanical nuclear radial density in the bond separation R for the classical radial density, then by adding the effect of zero-point energy and other level shifts, and finally by including explicit rovibrational quantization …

Microscopic And Spectroscopic Studies Of Thermally Enhanced Electrospun Pmma Micro- And Nanofibers, Sean Pelfrey, Travis Cantu, Michael R. Papantonakis, Duane L. Simonson, R. Andrew Mcgill, Javier Macossay-Torres Mar 2010

Microscopic And Spectroscopic Studies Of Thermally Enhanced Electrospun Pmma Micro- And Nanofibers, Sean Pelfrey, Travis Cantu, Michael R. Papantonakis, Duane L. Simonson, R. Andrew Mcgill, Javier Macossay-Torres

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have been incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) through electrospinning. The resulting micro- and nanofibers have been characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), which confirmed fiber formation and demonstrated a core-sheath structure of the PMMA fibers. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) was used to obtain the thermal properties of the materials, indicating an enhancement in the thermal properties of the composite fibers. In addition, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was utilized to investigate the interactions of PMMA micro- and nanofibers with CNFs, demonstrating the preferred sites of intermolecular interactions between the polymer matrix and the filler.

On The Anomalous Balmer Line Strengths In Globular Clusters, Violet Poole, Guy Worthey, Hyun Chul Lee, Jedidiah Serven

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Spectral feature index diagrams with integrated globular clusters and simple stellar population models often show that some clusters have weak Hβ, so weak that even the oldest models cannot match the observed feature depths. In this work, we rule out the possibility that abundance mixture effects are responsible for the weak indices unless such changes operate to cool the entire isochrone. We discuss this result in the context of other explanations, including horizontal branch morphology, blue straggler populations, and nebular or stellar emission fill-in, finding a preference for flaring in M giants as an explanation for the Hβ anomaly. © …

Remarkable Iodine-Catalyzed Synthesis Of Novel Pyrrole- Bearing N-Polyaromatic B-Lactams, Debasish Bandyopadhyay, Gildardo Rivera, Isabel Salinas, Hector Aguilar, Bimal K. Banik

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Because of their interesting biological properties various methods for the synthesis of substituted pyrroles are described in the literature. However, synthesis of pyrroles fused with a β-lactam ring has not been reported. Our group has demonstrated synthesis and biological evaluation of various β-lactams as anticancer agents. The anticancer activities of these compounds have prompted us to study the synthesis of pyrroles bound to the β-lactams. We have identified an expeditious synthetic method for the preparation of pyrroles fused with β-lactams by reacting 3-amino β-lactams with acetonylacetone in the presence of catalytic amounts (5 mol%) of molecular iodine at room temperature. …

Shape Replication Through Self-Assembly And Rnase Enzymes, Zachary Abel, Nadia Benbernou, Mirela Damian, Erik D. Demaine, Martin L. Demaine, Robin Flatland, Scott D. Kominers, Robert Schweller

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We introduce the problem of shape replication in the Wang tile self-assembly model. Given an input shape, we consider the problem of designing a self-assembly system which will replicate that shape into either a specific number of copies, or an unbounded number of copies. Motivated by practical DNA implementations of Wang tiles, we consider a model in which tiles consisting of DNA or RNA can be dynamically added in a sequence of stages. We further permit the addition of RNase enzymes capable of disintegrating RNA tiles. Under this model, we show that arbitrary genus-0 shapes can be replicated infinitely many …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present a search for gravitational waves from 116 known millisecond and young pulsars using data from the fifth science run of the LIGO detectors. For this search, ephemerides overlapping the run period were obtained for all pulsars using radio and X-ray observations. We demonstrate an updated search method that allows for small uncertainties in the pulsar phase parameters to be included in the search. We report no signal detection from any of the targets and therefore interpret our results as upper limits on the gravitational wave signal strength. The most interesting limits are those for young pulsars. We present …

Effects Of Α-Element Enhancement And The Thermally Pulsing-Asymptotic Giant Branch On Surface Brightness Fluctuation Magnitudes And Broadband Colors, Hyun Chul Lee, Guy Worthey, John P. Blakeslee Jan 2010

Effects Of Α-Element Enhancement And The Thermally Pulsing-Asymptotic Giant Branch On Surface Brightness Fluctuation Magnitudes And Broadband Colors, Hyun Chul Lee, Guy Worthey, John P. Blakeslee

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We investigate the effects of α-element enhancement and the thermally pulsing-asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars on the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) magnitudes and broadband colors of simple stellar populations and compare to the empirical calibrations. We consider a broad range of ages and metallicities using the recently updated Teramo BaSTI isochrones. We find that the α-element-enhanced I-band SBF magnitudes are about 0.35mag brighter and their integrated V - I colors are about 0.02mag redder, mostly because of oxygen-enhancement effects on the upper red giant branch and AGB. We also demonstrate, using both the Teramo BaSTI and Padova isochrones, the acute …

A Quadratic Lower Bound For Rocchio’S Similarity-Based Relevance Feedback Algorithm With A Fixed Query Updating Factor, Zhixiang Chen, Bin Fu, John P. Abraham Jan 2010

A Quadratic Lower Bound For Rocchio’S Similarity-Based Relevance Feedback Algorithm With A Fixed Query Updating Factor, Zhixiang Chen, Bin Fu, John P. Abraham

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Rocchio’s similarity-based relevance feedback algorithm, one of the most important query reformation methods in information retrieval, is essentially an adaptive supervised learning algorithm from examples. In practice, Rocchio’s algorithm often uses a fixed query updating factor. When this is the case, we strengthen the linear Ω(n) lower bound obtained by Chen and Zhu (Inf. Retr. 5:61–86, 2002) and prove that Rocchio’s algorithm makes Ω(k(n−k)) mistakes in searching for a collection of documents represented by a monotone disjunction of k relevant features over the n-dimensional binary vector space {0,1}n, …

Unidirectional Nonlinear Pt-Symmetric Optical Structures, Hamidreza Ramezani, Tsampikos Kottos Jan 2010

Unidirectional Nonlinear Pt-Symmetric Optical Structures, Hamidreza Ramezani, Tsampikos Kottos

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We show that nonlinear optical structures involving a balanced gain-loss profile can act as unidirectional optical valves. This is made possible by exploiting the interplay between the fundamental symmetries of parity (P) and time (T), with optical nonlinear effects. This unidirectional dynamics is specifically demonstrated for the case of an integrable PT-symmetric nonlinear system.

Apparent Faster-Than-Light Pulse Propagation In Interstellar Space: A New Probe Of The Interstellar Medium, F. A. Jenet, D. Fleckenstein, A. Ford, A. Garcia, R. Miller, J. Rivera, K. Stovall Jan 2010

Apparent Faster-Than-Light Pulse Propagation In Interstellar Space: A New Probe Of The Interstellar Medium, F. A. Jenet, D. Fleckenstein, A. Ford, A. Garcia, R. Miller, J. Rivera, K. Stovall

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Radio pulsars emit regular bursts of radio radiation that propagate through the interstellar medium (ISM), the tenuous gas and plasma between the stars. Previously known dispersive properties of the ISM cause low-frequency pulses to be delayed in time with respect to high frequency ones. This effect can be explained by the presence of free electrons in the medium. The ISM also contains neutral hydrogen that has a well-known resonance at 1420.4 MHz. Electromagnetic theory predicts that at such a resonance, the induced dispersive effects will be drastically different from those of the free electrons. Pulses traveling through a cloud of …

Triplets Of Supermassive Black Holes: Astrophysics Gravitational Waves And Detection, Pau Amaro-Seoane, Alberto Sesana, Loren Hoffman, Matthew Benacquista, Christoph Eichhorn, Junichiro Makino, Rainer Spurzem

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) found in the centres of many galaxies are understood to play a fundamental, active role in the cosmological structure formation process. In hierarchical formation scenarios, SMBHs are expected to form binaries following the merger of their host galaxies. If these binaries do not coalesce before the merger with a third galaxy, the formation of a black hole triple system is possible. Numerical simulations of the dynamics of triples within galaxy cores exhibit phases of very high eccentricity (as high as e∼ 0.99). During these phases, intense bursts of gravitational radiation can be emitted at orbital periapsis, …

The Lisa Gravitational Wave Foreground: A Study Of Double White Dwarfs, Ashley J. Ruiter, Krzysztof Belczynski, Matthew Benacquista, Shane L. Larson, Gabriel Williams

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Double white dwarfs (WDs) are expected to be a source of confusion-limited noise for the future gravitational wave observatory LISA. In a specific frequency range, this \"foreground noise\" is predicted to rise above the instrumental noise and hinder the detection of other types of signals, e.g., gravitational waves arising from stellar-mass objects inspiraling into massive black holes. In many previous studies, only detached populations of compact object binaries have been considered in estimating the LISA gravitational wave foreground signal. Here, we investigate the influence of compact object detached and Roche-Lobe overflow (RLOF) Galactic binaries on the shape and strength of …

Particle Swarm Optimization And Gravitational Wave Data Analysis: Performance On A Binary Inspiral Testbed, Yan Wang, Soumya Mohanty Jan 2010

Particle Swarm Optimization And Gravitational Wave Data Analysis: Performance On A Binary Inspiral Testbed, Yan Wang, Soumya Mohanty

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The detection and estimation of gravitational wave signals belonging to a parameterized family of waveforms requires, in general, the numerical maximization of a data-dependent function of the signal parameters. Because of noise in the data, the function to be maximized is often highly multimodal with numerous local maxima. Searching for the global maximum then becomes computationally expensive, which in turn can limit the scientific scope of the search. Stochastic optimization is one possible approach to reducing computational costs in such applications. We report results from a first investigation of the particle swarm optimization method in this context. The method is …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report the results of the first search for gravitational waves from compact binary coalescence using data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory and Virgo detectors. Five months of data were collected during the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory’s S5 and Virgo’s VSR1 science runs. The search focused on signals from binary mergers with a total mass between 2 and 35M⊙. No gravitational waves are identified. The cumulative 90%-confidence upper limits on the rate of compact binary coalescence are calculated for nonspinning binary neutron stars, black hole-neutron star systems, and binary black holes to be 8.7×10−3  yr−1 L−110, 2.2×10−3  yr−1 L−110, …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present results from an all-sky search for unmodeled gravitational-wave bursts in the data collected by the LIGO, GEO 600 and Virgo detectors between November 2006 and October 2007. The search is performed by three different analysis algorithms over the frequency band 50–6000 Hz. Data are analyzed for times with at least two of the four LIGO-Virgo detectors in coincident operation, with a total live time of 266 days. No events produced by the search algorithms survive the selection cuts. We set a frequentist upper limit on the rate of gravitational-wave bursts impinging on our network of detectors. When combined …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave bursts (GWBs) associated with 137 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that were detected by satellite-based gamma-ray experiments during the fifth LIGO science run and first Virgo science run. The data used in this analysis were collected from 2005 November 4 to 2007 October 1, and most of the GRB triggers were from the Swift satellite. The search uses a coherent network analysis method that takes into account the different locations and orientations of the interferometers at the three LIGO-Virgo sites. We find no evidence for GWB signals associated with this sample of GRBs. …

Spatial Instability Of Electrically Driven Jets With Finite Conductivity And Under Constant Or Variable Applied Field, Saulo Orizaga, Daniel N. Riahi Dec 2009

Spatial Instability Of Electrically Driven Jets With Finite Conductivity And Under Constant Or Variable Applied Field, Saulo Orizaga, Daniel N. Riahi

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We investigate the problem of spatial instability of electrically driven viscous jets with finite electrical conductivity and in the presence of either a constant or a variable applied electric field. A mathematical model, which is developed and used for the spatially growing disturbances in electrically driven jet flows, leads to a lengthy equation for the unknown growth rate and frequency of the disturbances. This equation is solved numerically using Newton’s method. For neutral temporal stability boundary, we find, in particular, two new spatial modes of instability under certain conditions. One of these modes is enhanced by the strength Ω of …

Evaluation Of Windows Servers Security Under Icmp And Tcp Denial Of Service Attacks, Hari Krishnea Vallalacheruvu Dec 2009

Evaluation Of Windows Servers Security Under Icmp And Tcp Denial Of Service Attacks, Hari Krishnea Vallalacheruvu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Securing server from Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks is a challenging task for network operators. DDOS attacks are known to reduce the performance of web based applications and reduce the number of legitimate client connections. In this thesis, we evaluate performance of a Windows server 2003 under these attacks. In this thesis, we also evaluate and compare effectiveness of three different protection mechanisms, namely SYN Cache, SYN Cookie and SYN proxy protection methods, to protect against TCP SYN DDoS attacks. It is found that the SYN attack protection at the server is more effective at lower loads of SYN …
