High Resolution Validation Of Next Generation Turbulent Flow Models Using Neutron Beams, Laser Fluorescence, And Cryogenic Helium, Landen G Mcdonald May 2019

High Resolution Validation Of Next Generation Turbulent Flow Models Using Neutron Beams, Laser Fluorescence, And Cryogenic Helium, Landen G Mcdonald

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Turbulent fluid flow is an incredibly unpredictable subject that continues to confound scientists and engineers. All of the empirical data that has been the basis of conventional turbulent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models for decades only extends to roughly the equivalent turbulence created when Michael Phelps swims in a pool. The problem is that this data is then extrapolated out many orders of magnitude in order to design cruise ships, airplanes, and rockets which operate in significantly more turbulent flow regimes. This creates an incredible degree of uncertainty in the design process that demands over-engineering and increased expenditures.

The development …

Fungal Response To Wildfire In A Southeastern Wildland-Urban Interface, Vanessa Rosanne Harpe Apr 2019

Fungal Response To Wildfire In A Southeastern Wildland-Urban Interface, Vanessa Rosanne Harpe

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Fungi are key to belowground ecosystem function, yet post-fire recovery of fungal communities has not been examined in many ecosystems. A massive wildfire in 2016 in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) and surrounding urban landscape (Gatlinburg, TN) presented a novel opportunity to study post-fire fungal response within an urban-forest ecosystem. We surveyed soils and plants in GSMNP and Gatlinburg, TN 1.5-2 years post-fire to assess colonization of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF, aseptate hyphae) and decomposers/pathogens (septate hyphae) from 13 plant species across 18 sites, (9 park, 9 urban).

Overall, colonization by aseptate (intraradical R2= 0.46, P …

Assessing The Habitability Of Mars Using Impact Crater Statistics, Emily N. Shaver Apr 2019

Assessing The Habitability Of Mars Using Impact Crater Statistics, Emily N. Shaver

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Because Mars lacks a global magnetic field or protective ozone layer, its surface is unshielded to harsh radiation from space. This ionizing radiation breaks down any organic components in the soil at the martian surface on timescales of tens to hundreds of millions years (10–100 Ma). In planetary geology, we use the density of impact craters as a proxy for time: older surfaces tend to accumulate more craters. Using impact craters, we can assess the exposure age and therefore organic preservation potential of the Martian surface from orbit.

The goal of this ongoing project is to better understand exposure ages …

Using Atran Telluric Correction To Investigate The 3Μm-Region, Lucas Trent Mcclure Apr 2019

Using Atran Telluric Correction To Investigate The 3Μm-Region, Lucas Trent Mcclure

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Small-bodies of the Solar System, such as asteroids, provide an abundant amount of information about planetary formation and evolution. In particular, the characterization of asteroids is vital to understanding the distribution and abundance of water throughout the Solar System. Recent findings in asteroid spectroscopy have provided evidence for the surface presence of water-ice and hydroxide, likely due to silicates on asteroid surfaces interacting with H+ ions from the solar wind. To investigate surface hydration, astronomers analyze the 3µm region, where an absorption feature is exhibited. Atmospheric water, however, affects the quality of the data around this particular region, but …

Movement Of Lifetime Maximum Intensity Locations During The North Atlantic Hurricane Season, Morgan Steckler Apr 2019

Movement Of Lifetime Maximum Intensity Locations During The North Atlantic Hurricane Season, Morgan Steckler

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Where a storm reaches its lifetime maximum intensity (LMI) can be a powerful indicator of tropical cyclone intensification patterns. Any changes in this location may demonstrate how hurricanes are affected by climate change. Studies on the annual and decadal trends in LMI location have shown that the latitude where storms are reaching their LMI is shifting, but at different rates and in different directions depending on the ocean basin. In the North Atlantic, for example, LMI location seems to be moving slightly closer to the equator, especially for those storms with the greatest intensities. LMI location patterns have yet to …

The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a differential impact on the financial performance of a company between environmental and social events.

This study uses a randomization of publicly traded companies within specific, pre-determined SIC codes, which is a collection of 66 companies, split between manufacturing and retail, to get the most accurate representation.

This study utilizes multiple regression models via STATA to analyze data compiled from the Wharton Research Database Services (WRDS) utilizing the MSCI ESG KLD, and Bloomberg, to analyze the percent increase in stock price which is the overarching models independent variable. Then, …

Spatial Analysis Of Mountaintop Mining's Impact On Water Quality, Samantha Cahill May 2018

Spatial Analysis Of Mountaintop Mining's Impact On Water Quality, Samantha Cahill

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Mountaintop coal mining (MTM) has been shown to have negative effects on both biological communities and water quality downstream of mining. Impacts of MTM can still be seen decades after the mining has ended, leading to the conclusion that the cumulative effects of mining last decades after the mining has ended. Here, I aim to analyze the effects of MTM on both water quality and benthic macroinvertebrates in streams of the Southern Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky. I combine a remotely sensed mining landcover product with data on water quality parameters and stream macroinvertebrate communities from state and federal monitoring programs …

Modeling Adsorption And Diffusion Of Atomic Oxygen On The Ag(111) Surface Using Kinetic Monte Carlo Simulations, Seth Spencer Street, Sharani Roy, Sara Isbill May 2018

Modeling Adsorption And Diffusion Of Atomic Oxygen On The Ag(111) Surface Using Kinetic Monte Carlo Simulations, Seth Spencer Street, Sharani Roy, Sara Isbill

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Oxidized silver surfaces are widely used as industrial heterogeneous catalysts to oxidize small organic compounds, such as ethylene. While surface-adsorbed oxygen is known to participate in catalysis, it has been suggested that ‘subsurface’ oxygen adsorbed in the near-surface region of silver also plays important roles in surface reconstruction and reactivity. However, the formation, motion, and chemical behavior of subsurface oxygen in silver are not well understood. In the present work, a kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulation has been developed using the Python programming language to computationally model the diffusion kinetics of atomic oxygen (AO) at the Ag(111) surface. This simulation …

A Mobile Canoe-Mounted, Geo-Referenced, 3-D Water Quality Analyzer, Alex Shpik, Alysse Ness, Ryan Vernich

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Water quality analysis is vital to ensure the health of water sources, as well as identifying pollutants and modeling how they affect a river system. Current methods of collecting water samples consist of stationary samplers that measure changes in water quality at only one location over time. We have designed a mobile, canoe-mounted, water quality analyzing system that will enable researchers to efficiently collect a large number of water quality samples with an associated GPS location and depth for each data point. While the canoe travels in parallel swaths bank to bank, the unit will alternately collect samples from 3 …

Nucleosynthesis In Core-Collapse Supernovae, Rachel E Mersch Apr 2016

Nucleosynthesis In Core-Collapse Supernovae, Rachel E Mersch

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

A Core-Collapse Supernova explosion occurs when nuclear fusion stops in the core of a massive star. Without a source of energy supplying enough pressure to balance gravity, the core becomes unstable and collapses to form a neutron star. Beyond the neutron star, a shockwave forms which moves outward through the star, causing heavier elements to be created through nuclear fusion. We have been studying the elements that are ejected from a Core-Collapse Supernova using a nuclear code network called XNet, which follows the thermonuclear kinetics. We use the results from a code called Chimera, which explores the mechanism of Core-Collapse …

Using Ab Initio Simulations To Examine The Flexoelectric Effect In Perovskites, Austin B. Plymill Apr 2015

Using Ab Initio Simulations To Examine The Flexoelectric Effect In Perovskites, Austin B. Plymill

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Flexoelectricity is a property that dielectric materials exhibit where they produce polarization when subject to an inhomogeneous deformation. In the past, this effect has been largely ignored, as its effect in bulk materials has been much less significant than the related effect of piezoelectricity, the polarization of material due to uniform deformation. Interest in flexoelectricity has been increasing in recent years due to the development of nanotechnologies. Flexoelectricity is proportional to the strain gradient a material is subjected to making the flexoelectric effect immense on the nanoscale. Additionally, the flexoelectric effect scales with the dielectric constant making it have a …
