A Partial "Squeezing Theorem" For A Particular Class Of Many-Valued Logics, Stephen Michael Walk Jan 1994

A Partial "Squeezing Theorem" For A Particular Class Of Many-Valued Logics, Stephen Michael Walk

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem to be studied for this thesis was that of whether the usual statement calculus is a suitable formal system for every many-valued logic in a particular collection of logics. The logics in question are those that fall between the usual two-valued logic and a modified form of the Lukasiewicz-Tarski three-valued logic.

Since this betweenness relationship was an original concept and appeared nowhere in the literature, the first goal in the research plan was to define this relationship precisely. Preliminary concepts included truth value mapping and forgivingness of logics, concepts that, like betweenness, are original to this paper and …

The Corrosive Effects Of Salt Spray On Electrolytic Zinc Plated Mechanical Fasteners: The Case Of Clear Chromate And Yellow Dichromate Coatings On Medium Carbon Plated Bolts, Souleymane Boukari Jan 1994

The Corrosive Effects Of Salt Spray On Electrolytic Zinc Plated Mechanical Fasteners: The Case Of Clear Chromate And Yellow Dichromate Coatings On Medium Carbon Plated Bolts, Souleymane Boukari

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between plating thickness and corrosion resistance of zinc coated medium carbon steel bolts under salt spray moisture conditions. Two types of zinc coatings were chosen for the study: the clear chromate zinc and the yellow dichromate zinc. One hundred and eighty 3/8-16 x 5 3/4 inch medium carbon steel bolts were selected for the test and divided into groups of 18. Two types of salt solution were used in the study: the low salt and the high salt. Bolts with various coatings tested with low salt concentration were composed of …

Towards The Development Of A Kantian Environmental Ethic, Sally Nelson Wiedmann Jan 1992

Towards The Development Of A Kantian Environmental Ethic, Sally Nelson Wiedmann

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis is a response to Aldo Leopold's 1949 call for a new, wholistic environmental ethic. Leopold's call stemmed from his concern over the increasing degradation of the environment as a result of a utilitarian approach which judges nature as good only insofar as it is good for human economic and recreational benefit. This thesis is aimed at the development of a wholistic, non-utilitarian environmental ethic grounded in the philosophy. of Immanuel Kant. The thesis begins with a brief review of the utilitarian environmental ethic which Leopold opposed and some of the consequences it has wrought in the natural world. …

Applications Of Aerial Imagery In Identification Of Natural Areas, Kendall Duane Wessel Jan 1984

Applications Of Aerial Imagery In Identification Of Natural Areas, Kendall Duane Wessel

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There is current interest in utilizing aerial imagery to obtain information on natural vegetation. The purpose of this study is to utilize and evaluate commonly available aerial imagery to identify potential natural areas suitable for preservation and to initiate development of a procedure for imagery interpretation to meet this goal.

Clayton County, located in the northeastern quarter of the state of Iowa, was selected for study because it is dissected by steep, narrow stream valleys that are unsuitable for cultivation and may still possess native vegetation of a quality suitable for preservation.

Baseline or control communities were selected from known …

A Study Of The Esterification Of 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanediol, Lewis Metzler Naylor Jan 1970

A Study Of The Esterification Of 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanediol, Lewis Metzler Naylor

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this research was to prepare, identify, and characterize 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,.3-cyclobutanediol bischloroacetate using 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol and monochloroacetic acid as starting materials. The synthesis of this diester has not been reported previously.

Catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions were attempted, with the uncatalyzed having, in general, the better yield. The diester, trans-2,2,4,4-tetrametbyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol bischloroacetate (mp, 103.5-104; n22, 1.516-1.520), was isolated from a mixture of the isomers. The trans configuration of the diester was confirmed by comparing known nuclear magnetic resonance spectra to that of the diester. Infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm functional groups. Standard analytical techniques were used to determine chloride …
