Improving Failure Mode & Effect Analysis ( Fmea ) Method Using Discrete Event Simulation, Adil Abdukeyum
Improving Failure Mode & Effect Analysis ( Fmea ) Method Using Discrete Event Simulation, Adil Abdukeyum
Theses and Dissertations
To improve system performances and process dependability, analyzing the system accurately is an essential step but difficult to achieve and it is even more challenging if the system is complex and dynamic. A popular tool called FMEA has been widely used to analyze and improve systems. However, both academia and industry acknowledge its subjectivity and lack of cause-effect analysis capability. Therefore, in this research, the author presents a more objective and data-driven method called Discrete Event Simulation to improve FMEA’s analysis capability. Also, how the Discrete Event Simulation may enhance the FMEA by a step-by-step analysis approach is presented by …
Towards Constructing Vertex Algebroids, Nicholas J. Klecki
Towards Constructing Vertex Algebroids, Nicholas J. Klecki
Theses and Dissertations
The notion of vertex algebroids were introduced in the late 1990's as a crucial tool for the study of chiral differential operators and chiral de Rham complex. Vertex algebroids play vital role in the study of N-graded vertex algebra. Also, they have deep connection with representation theory of Leibniz algebras. However, the classification of irreducible modules of vertex algebroids is not completed.
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the possibility of using the simple Lie algebra G_2 and its irreducible modules to construct vertex A-algebroids B that contain G_2 as their Levi factor. Under very mild and natural …
Lie Groups And Euler-Bernoulli Beam Equation, Medeu Amangeldi
Lie Groups And Euler-Bernoulli Beam Equation, Medeu Amangeldi
Theses and Dissertations
Lie groups approach in differential equations was a breakthrough subject in the late nineteenth century. Sophus Lie, a Norwegian mathematician, introduced the systematic approach to study the solutions of differential equations. The main goal of this thesis is to study, using Lie's approach, the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation subject to swelling force, the fourth-order nonlinear differential equation used to describe the beam deflection under the swelling force. In particular, we will classify the symmetry groups of this equation, obtain several reductions, and demonstrate both analytical and numerical solutions.
Embedding Factorizations, Anna Johnsen
Embedding Factorizations, Anna Johnsen
Theses and Dissertations
Let $V$ be a set of $n$ vertices for some $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and let $E$ be a collection of $h$-subsets of $V$. Then $\mathscr G = (V,E)$ is an $h$-unifrom hypergraph and we refer to $V$ as its vertex set and to $E$ as its edge set. We say that $\mathscr G$ is complete and denote it by $K_n^h$ if every $h$-subset of $V$ is contained in $E$. If every edge in $E$ is repeated $\lambda$ times, we say $G$ is $\lambda$-fold. Specifically, $\lambda K_n^h$ is the complete $\lambda$-fold $n$-vertex $h$-uniform hypergraph with an edge set containing $\lambda$ copies of every …
A Computational Investigation Of The Biophysical Mechanisms Underlying Thermotaxis In The Afd Neurons Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Zachary Mobille
A Computational Investigation Of The Biophysical Mechanisms Underlying Thermotaxis In The Afd Neurons Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Zachary Mobille
Theses and Dissertations
Thermotaxis in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is studied at the cellular scale of the amphid finger-like ciliated (AFD) neurons, which have previously been shown to be essential for thermoreception. The voltage and calcium signals of AFD during temperature stimuli are described with ordinary differential equations. The primary calcium model is a modified version of that published by Kuramochi and Doi in 2017 to explain the calcium responses of the chemosensitive amphid single-ciliated right (ASER) neuron to fluctuations in extracellular salt concentration. To account for the effects of temperature, changes to the stimuli conditions under which inactivation takes place …
Synthesis Of Oxyquinoliziniporphyrins And Pyridoquinoliziniporphyrins, Emma Cramer
Synthesis Of Oxyquinoliziniporphyrins And Pyridoquinoliziniporphyrins, Emma Cramer
Theses and Dissertations
N-confused porphyrins are porphyrin analogues that introduce a nitrogen outside of the macrocyclic cavity. Two novel N-confused type porphyrins were targeted for this study. Both syntheses use the key intermediate 4-quinolizone. Previous studies of N-confused pyriporphyrin showed that the system is nonaromatic and resembles structurally analogous benziporphyrins. However, modifications to systems of this type can introduce aromatic characteristics. The first system targeted introduced a quinolizone subunit into a porphyrin system. Quinolizone contains a thermodynamically stable amide and this unit disrupts the aromatic pathway. However, dipolar resonance contributors can potentially reinstate some aromatic character. A quinolizone dialdehyde was condensed with tripyrranes …

Aqueous Kinetics Of Α-Hydroxyhippuric Acid Derivatives Bearing Electron-Withdrawing Groups As A Function Of Ph And Buffer Catalysts, Mohamad Imad Rafie
Theses and Dissertations
It has been shown that carbinolamides are intermediates in the enzyme-catalyzed synthesis of -amidated peptides. Although carbinolamides are important intermediates in the production of these hormones and have roles in other biological venues, little attention has been given to their mechanisms of reaction in water, and, thus, it is difficult to speculate how their reaction would be enzymatically catalyzed. The purpose of the work presented here was to synthesize structural analogs of the biological intermediates and study their mechanism of breakdown in water. -Hydroxyhippuric acid, a substrate for the enzymatic system, provides an easily modified template for the study of …
The Development Of A New Entry Point Into Enantiomerically Enriched Sulfinyl Derivatives, Jessica Shaw
The Development Of A New Entry Point Into Enantiomerically Enriched Sulfinyl Derivatives, Jessica Shaw
Theses and Dissertations
Optical probes may be used as reliable tools for detecting and imagining the inside of cells for medical diagnostics. Among available options, the use of thiol probes is of interest as thiols are present in nearly all cells and their levels are tightly regulated, thus any variation is associated with disease. A proper thiol bioimaging probe must have a thiol cleavage group/reactive group and a fluorophore. It is found that novel sulfinate aryl ester (phenoxysulfinate esters) probes selectively cleave thiols at physiological pH and show much promise as effective tools for bioimaging.
In this context, the synthesis of the related …
An Investigation Of Gene Regulatory Network State Space Variability, Sara Faye Liesman
An Investigation Of Gene Regulatory Network State Space Variability, Sara Faye Liesman
Theses and Dissertations
Genes are segments of DNA that provide a blueprint for cells and organisms to effectively control processes and regulations within individuals. There have been many attempts to quantify these processes, as a greater understanding of how genes operate could have large impacts on both personalized and precision medicine. Gene interactions are of particular interest, however, current biological methods can not easily reveal the details of these interactions. Therefore, we infer networks of interactions from gene expression data which we call a gene regulatory network, or GRN. Due to the robust behavior of genes and the inherent variability within interactions, models …

Rapid Vertical Flow Assay On Aunp Plasmonic Paper For Sers-Based Point Of Need Diagnostics, Richard Frimpong
Theses and Dissertations
SERS based immunoassays for point-of-care diagnostics is a promising tool to facilitate biomarker detection for early disease diagnosis and control. The technique is based on a sandwiched system in which antigen is first captured by a selective substrate and then labeled by an extrinsic Raman label (ERL). Here, we report on the use of gold nanoparticle modified filter paper as a novel capture membrane in a vertical flow format. This vertical flow configuration affords reproducible flow of sample and label through the capture substrate to overcome diffusion limited kinetics and significantly reduced assay time. The filter paper was selected due …
Adsorption Behavior Of Chemically / Charged Modified Antibodies On Gold Nanoparticles, Samuel Okyem
Adsorption Behavior Of Chemically / Charged Modified Antibodies On Gold Nanoparticles, Samuel Okyem
Theses and Dissertations
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been exploited in the various domains of science such as drug delivery, bio-sensing, immunoassays and environmental sensors, due to their optical properties and intriguing surface chemistry. Different scientific procedures have been used to effectively immobilize antibodies onto AuNPs. Although acceptable outcomes have been achieved in the immobilization of antibodies onto AuNPs, the sensitivity of these immobilized antibodies to target antigen or binding sites is limited due to improper orientation of the antibodies. Also, the possibility of nanoparticle aggregation when exposed to proteins limits its biomedical applicability.
There is some evidence that the surface charge of antibodies …

Investigating The Reversibility Of Protein Adsorption On Gold Nanoparticles And The Role Of Free Thiol, Awosiji Olatunde Awotunde
Theses and Dissertations
Protein-gold nanoparticle (AuNP) bioconjugates have many potential applications in nanomedicine. A thorough understanding of the interaction between the protein and AuNP is critical to engineering these functional bioconjugates with desirable properties. In this work, we investigate the role of free thiols presented by the protein on the stability of the protein-AuNP conjugate. Human serum albumin (HSA) was modified with 2-iminothiolane (Traut’s reagent) to introduce additional thiols on the protein surface, and three variants of HSA were synthesized to present 1, 5, and 20 free thiols by controlling the molar excess of the chemical modifier. Protein exchange studies on AuNPs were …

The Role Of Floating Gardens To Alter The Water Quality Of The Chicago River: Chicago, Il, Emmett Andrew Spooner
The Role Of Floating Gardens To Alter The Water Quality Of The Chicago River: Chicago, Il, Emmett Andrew Spooner
Theses and Dissertations
The pollution of heavy metals within surface water is a rising global concern. As heavy metals are transported through rivers, they can bioaccumulate through the food web, leading to harmful concentrations within waterways. In urban areas such as the city of Chicago, Illinois, the use of road salts is a concern as elevated concentrations of chloride (Cl–) can reduce surface water quality. Since surface waters can carry heavy metals and Cl– salts over a large distance, methods of in-situ phytoremediation are of growing importance. Through a pilot project, a floating garden system has been installed along a portion of the …

Using Satellite-Based Hydro-Climate Variables And Machine Learning For Streamflow Modeling At Various Scales In The Upper Mississippi River Basin, Dongjae Kwon
Theses and Dissertations
Streamflow data are essential to study the hydrologic cycle and to attain appropriate water resource management policies. However, the availability of gauge data is limited due to various reasons such as economic, political, instrumental malfunctioning, and poor spatial distribution. Although streamflow can be simulated by process-based and machine learning approaches, applicability is limited due to intensive modeling effort, or its black-box nature, respectively. Here, we introduce a machine learning (Boosted Regression Tree (BRT)) approach based on remote sensing data to simulate monthly streamflow for three of varying sizes watersheds in the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB). By integrating spatial land …

Capture Zone Analysis Of A Wellfield To Assess Contaminant Transport, Prince Kojo Oware
Capture Zone Analysis Of A Wellfield To Assess Contaminant Transport, Prince Kojo Oware
Theses and Dissertations
Radium is a common contaminant to the deep Cambrian- Ordovician aquifer in northern Illinois. Deep groundwater aquifers are used as fresh water resource in many parts of the world. Due to overuse, increase in salinity, natural and human-driven contamination, sustainability of these aquifer systems is uncertain. The purpose of this study is to better understand the groundwater flow system in deep bedrock aquifers in northern Illinois, and its control on the radium contamination in Rochelle’s Public Water Supply Wells (PWSW). We have tested two hypotheses: (1) the Radium (Ra) transport is driven by large pumping centers that interrupt groundwater flow …
Hydrogeologic Characteristics And Groundwater Sustainability Of A Deep Bedrock Aquifer System In Illinois, Luis Martinez
Hydrogeologic Characteristics And Groundwater Sustainability Of A Deep Bedrock Aquifer System In Illinois, Luis Martinez
Theses and Dissertations
Population growth and climate change has made groundwater an increasingly important freshwater resource. This study uses MODFLOW to estimate sustainable yield of a deep St. Peter Aquifer in Bloomington, IL. The city of Bloomington has installed two high capacity wells into the St. Peter Sandstone to meet its growing water demands. The St. Peter Aquifer is confined, receiving almost no modern recharge and is experiencing overexploitation in parts of Northern Illinois. I hypothesize that existing fast depletion of the deep St. Peter occurs due to lower-than-expected aquifer parameters of the aquifer. Further, current pumping of groundwater from the St. Peter, …
