In early chemistry education, students are often taught to think about electrons as small, negatively charged particles existing in planetary orbits around the nucleus of an atom, rather than creating an electron cloud. In reality, electrons exhibit wave-particle duality, and are best described as wave functions. This idea that the electrons travel as waves and are moving around the nucleus so quickly that it is not possible to know the speed or location of an electron at any given moment is extremely abstract and difficult to visualize. This research centers around a millifluidic device designed for the analysis of flowing chemical reactions that may happen too quickly to be analyzed by traditional spectroscopic methods. The device works by combining two simple concepts: fluid flows a certain distance over time and chemical reactions progress over time. Combining these allows for the correlation of reaction progress and distance through the device. Since the flow within the device is laminar, there is friction along the walls of the channel that creates a flow profile that elongates over time. In this paper, I will examine the integration of baseball into American culture and statistics’ involvement in that process. Porphyrins are a macrocyclic compound that can be modified in a myriad of ways offering useful and unique applications. These applications can range from ion sensing to catalysts in reactions. However, some of the most interesting applications revolve around medical and therapeutic treatments. The substitution of deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen containing one proton and one neutron, for a hydrogen has far reaching effects on the behavior of the compound. Scientists have been utilizing the effects of deuterium since 1961. The goal of this research was to express and purify Cellular Retinoic Acid Binding Protein Type 1 (CRABP1). CRABP1 binds to retinoic acid in the cell and shuttles the retinoic acid from one area in the cell to another. The overproduction of CRABP1 appears to be problematic because it can sequester the retinoic acid and prevent it from regulating gene expression. Previous studies have shown that increased levels of CRABP1 can result in tumor-promoting activity and disruption of lipid biology in the cell. Schur polynomials are a fundamental object in the field of algebraic combinatorics. The product of two Schur polynomials can be written as a sum of Schur polynomials using non-negative integer coefficients. A simple combinatorial algorithm for generating these coefficients is called the Littlewood-Richardson Rule. Schubert polynomials are generalizations of the Schur polynomials. Schubert polynomials also appear in many contexts, such as in algebraic combinatorics and algebraic geometry. As part of my honor's thesis project at Assumption College, I have been researching the ways that teachers are currently using tablets in their secondary mathematics classrooms. My thesis compares the benefits and drawbacks of having tablets in classrooms, tablets for every student, or no tablets at all. In the spring, I collected survey feedback from mathematics teachers in four different local school districts. This thesis researches the possibility of a renewable energy project specifically for Assumption College. As the school is already investing in solar power, my study looked at the feasibility of a wind turbine or geothermal heat pump unit on the campus. I conducted interviews with various institutions that have already undertaken similar projects so that I could better understand the process of installing these technologies, to discover possible funding that could be available, and the success of this technology in other schools.
