The paper presents the characteristics of the Average Toxicity Factor (ATF) for combustion gases emitted from incineration of hazardous waste. Proposals for the interpretation of this factor and the possibility of its use in assessing the degree of nuisance of the process in terms of the level of air pollutant emissions were also discussed.

The reaction ep⃗e′K+Λ(1520) with Λ(1520)→p′K- was studied at electron beam energies of 4.05, 4.25, and 4.46 GeV, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. We describe an evolutionary design paradigm called piecewise evolution. This evolutionary design paradigm allows the gradual evolution of a piece of hardware using discrete functional stages. The paradigm removes designs from a population of designs which effectively lose functionality already discovered. Significant improvement s in the evolution time of simple one-bit adders are reported. However, evolution of more complex devices does not seem to share the improvements in evolutionary speed of simple devices. These results are discussed in the context of epistasis and deceptiveness.

The time evolution of structure factors (SF) in the disordering process of an initially phase-separated lattice depends crucially on the microscopic disordering mechanism, such as Kawasaki dynamics (KD) or vacancy-mediated disordering (VMD). Monte Carlo simulations show unexpected “dips” in the SFs. A phenomenological model is introduced to explain the dips in the odd SFs, and an analytical solution of KD is derived, in excellent agreement with simulations. The presence (absence) of dips in the even SFs for VMD (KD) marks a significant but not yet understood difference of the two dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Most measures of health-related quality of life are undefined for people who die. Longitudinal analyses are often limited to a healthier cohort (survivors) that cannot be identified prospectively, and that may have had little change in health. OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate methods to transform a single self-rated health item (excellent to poor; EVGGFP) and the physical component score of the SF-36 (PCS) to new variables that include a defensible value for death. We describe X-ray production in the atmospheres of hot, early-type stars in the framework of a "stochastic shock model". The extended envelope of a star is assumed to possess numerous X-ray emitting "hot" zones that are produced by shocks and embedded in the ambient "cold" medium in dynamical equilibrium. It is shown that the apparent lack of X-ray variability on short (similar to hours) timescales do not contradict a shock model for X-ray production. The character of the X-ray variability is found to depend on the frequency with which hot zones are generated, the cool wind opacity to X-rays, and …

The flue gas cleaning system is usually one of the most costly elements of the installation to the incineration of hazardous waste. Adapting the system to the actual needs could therefore bring obvious economic benefits.

The paper presents the method of the preselection of the configuration of the cleaning system based on knowledge of the level of concentration of selected components of the raw exhaust gas (sulfur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, total dust, mercury, cadmium and thallium, and other heavy metals). New electron scattering measurements have been made that extend data on the 3He elastic magnetic form factor up to Q2 = 42.6fm-2. These new data test theoretical conjectures regarding non-nucleonic effects in the three-body system. The very small cross sections, as low as 10-40cm2/sr, required the use of a high-pressure cryogenic gas target and a detector system with excellent background rejection capability. No existing theoretical calculation satisfactorily accounts for all the available data.

We report the observation of stimulated emission and mirrorless lasing in pure cholesteric liquid crystals. The lasing action is attributed to the combination of the fluorescence and the distributed feedback that are due to the inherent periodic structure of the liquid crystal. If the reflection band matches the intrinsic emission of the cholesteric liquid crystal, the crystal becomes a natural laser material, which will self-lase, without any optical elements or the addition of dyes, under picosecond excitation at 355 nm. Solid state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is used to examine kerogen composition in weathering profiles of the Monterey, Green River, Woodford, and New Albany formations. Techniques include cross polarization (CP) and Bloch decay (BD) spectral acquisition, dipolar dephasing (DD), spin counting, experiments to provide estimates of relaxation times (T1ρH and T1H), and proton spin relaxation editing (PSRE). It is demonstrated that CP/MAS (cross polarization/magic angle spinning) spectra obtained on isolated kerogens provide reliable characterization of kerogen composition (compared with BD spectra and whole-rock samples). Constituent observations from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) in combination with estimates of the residual circulation are used to examine the transport and chemical budgets of HF, CH4 and O3 in the summer Northern Hemisphere. Budget calculations of HF, CH4 and O3 show that the transport tendency due to the residual circulation increases in magnitude and is largely opposed by eddy motions through the summer months. Ozone budget analyses show that between 100 and 31 hPa, the magnitudes of the mean circulation and eddy transport terms increase through the summer months, producing tendencies that are …

In the beginning of nineties, Hava Siegelmann proposed a new computational model, the Artificial Recurrent Neural Network (ARNN), and proved that it could perform hypercomputation. She also established the equivalence between the ARNN and other analog systems that support hypercomputation, launching the foundations of an alternative computational theory. In this paper we contribute to this alternative theory by exploring the use of formal methods in the verification of temporal properties of ARNNs. Suppression of a large-angle stimulated Raman scattering (LA-SRS) of a short modulated (two-frequency) laser pulse in a transparent plasma in the presence of a linear long-wavelength electron plasma wave (LW EPW) having relativistic phase velocity is considered under the conditions of weak and strong coupling. The laser spectrum includes two components with a frequency shift equal to the frequency of the LW EPW. The mutual influence of different spectral components of a laser on the SRS under a given angle in the presence of the LW EPW is examined.

Global diversity curves reflect more than just the number of taxa that have existed through time: they also mirror variation in the nature of the fossil record and the way the record is reported. These sampling effects are best quantified by assembling and analyzing large numbers of locality-specific biotic inventories. Here, we introduce a new database of this kind for the Phanerozoic fossil record of marine invertebrates. We apply four substantially distinct analytical methods that estimate taxonomic diversity by quantifying and correcting for variation through time in the number and nature of inventories. We studied the exclusive reaction ep⃗e′p′φ using the φ⃗K+K- decay mode. The data were collected using a 4.2 GeV incident electron beam and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Our experiment covers the range in Q2 from 0.7 to 2.2 GeV2, and W from 2.0 to 2.6 GeV. Taken together with all previous data, we find a consistent picture of φ production on the proton. Our measurement shows the expected decrease of the t slope with the vector-meson formation time cΔτ below 2 fm. At 〈cΔτ〉=0.6 fm, we measure bφ=2.27±0.42 GeV-2. The cross …

We discuss the quantization of a system of slowly moving extreme Reissner-Nordström black holes. In the near-horizon limit, this system has been shown to possess an SL(2,R) conformal symmetry. However, the Hamiltonian appears to have no well-defined ground state. This problem can be circumvented by a redefinition of the Hamiltonian due to de Alfaro, Fubini, and Furlan (DFF). We apply the Faddeev-Popov quantization procedure to show that the Hamiltonian with no ground state corresponds to a gauge in which there is an obstruction at the singularities of moduli space requiring a modification of the quantization rules. A bright synchrotron light source operated by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory served as an external source for infrared (IR) microscopy of plant root microcosms. Mid-IR light from synchrotrons is 2-3 orders of magnitude brighter than conventional sources, providing contrast based on the chemical information in the reflected signal at a spatial resolution near the diffraction-limit of 3-10 microns. A multi-species solver for plasma at thermodynamical equilibrium is developed. A numerical scheme, based on Roe's, is implemented with some modification regarding the average quantities. A perfect gas treatment is carried out for validations, and a quasi-real gas treatment is also presented. The latter takes into account the changes in the composition of the gas caused by fluctuations in temperature and density.
