Evidence For Penguin-Diagram Decays: First Observation Of B→K*(892)Γ, R. Ammar, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We have observed the decays B0→K*(892)0γ and B−→K*(892)−γ, which are evidence for the quark-level process b→sγ. The average branching fraction is (4.5±1.5±0.9)×10−5. This value is consistent with standard model predictions from electromagnetic penguin diagrams.

Study Of D0 Decays Into K̄0 And K̄*0, M. Procario, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Using the CLEO II detector at CESR we have studied D0 decays into final states with a ¯K0 or ¯K*0, and have measured branching ratios for the decay modes D0→(¯K0¯K*0)π0, η, η′. These results are compared with predictions of various charm decay models, and contributions of final-state interactions are discussed.

Repository Evaluation Of Software Reuse: An Empirical Study, R. D. Banker, Robert J. Kauffman, D. Zweig

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The use and benefits of repository evaluation of software reuse are illustrated through an analysis of the evolving repositories of two large firms that recently implemented integrated CASE development tools. The analysis shows that these tools have supported high levels of software reuse, but it also suggests that there remains considerable unexploited reuse potential. The findings indicate that organizational changes will be required before the full potential of the new technology can be realized.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured branching fractions for tau lepton decay into one-prong final states with multiple π0’s B0hnπ, normalized to the branching fraction for tau decay into one charged particle and a single π0. We find B0h2π/B0hπ=0.345±0.006±0.016, B0h3π/B0hπ=0.041 ±0.003±0.005, and B0h4π/B0hπ=0.006±0.002±0.002.

Search For Τ-→Γμ-: A Test Of Lepton Number Conservation, A. Bean, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A search for the lepton mumber violating decay of the τ lepton to the γμ final state has been performed with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell e+e− storage ring CESR. In a data sample that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.55 fb−1, we observe no candidates in the signal region. We thus determine an upper limit of B(τ−→γμ−)

Deterministic Approximations To Co-Production Problems With Service Constraints And Random Yields, Gabriel R. Bitran, Thin Yin Leong May 1992

Deterministic Approximations To Co-Production Problems With Service Constraints And Random Yields, Gabriel R. Bitran, Thin Yin Leong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Production planning problems where multiple item categories are produced simultaneously are examined. The items have random yields and are used to satisfy the demands of many products. These products have specification requirements that overlap. An item originally targeted to satisfy the demand of one product may be used to satisfy the demand of other products when it conforms to their specifications. Customers' demand must be satisfied from inventory. The problem is formulated with service constraints and a near-optimal solution is provided to the problem with a fixed planning horizon. Simple heuristics are proposed for the problem solved with a rolling …

Isospin Mass Splittings From Precision Measurements Of D*-D Mass Differences, D. Bortoletto, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Using the decay modes, D*+→D+π0 and D*0→D0π0, we have measured the D*+−D+ and D*0−D0 mass differences to be 140±0.08±0.06 and 142.12±0.05±0.05 MeV, respectively. Combining these measurements with the Particle Data Group average for the D*+−D0 mass difference, we obtain isospin mass splittings for D*+−Dusp*0 and D+−D0 of 3.32±0.08±0.05 and 4.80±0.10 ±0.06 MeV. We discuss the implications of these measurements for models of isospin mass differences and model-dependent estimates of fD.

Measurement Of The Tau Lepton Electronic Branching Fraction, D. Akerib, M. Thulasidas Jan 1992

Measurement Of The Tau Lepton Electronic Branching Fraction, D. Akerib, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The tau lepton electron branching fraction has been measured with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring as Be=0.1749±0.0014±0.0022, with the first error statistical and the second systematic. The measurement involves counting electron-positron annihilation events in which both taus decay to electrons, and normalizing to the number of tau-pair decays expected from the measured luminosity. Detected photons in these events constitute a definitive observation of tau decay radiation.

Query Optimization In Oodb, Hwee Hwa Pang, Hongjun Lu, Beng Chin Ooi Jan 1992

Query Optimization In Oodb, Hwee Hwa Pang, Hongjun Lu, Beng Chin Ooi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In object-oriented databases, relationships are generally maintained explicitly. The partial result of a retrieved object can be used to efficiently retrieve related objects. Instead of optimizing joins as in relational database systems, pointer chasing is optimized in object-oriented database systems. Further, semantics inherent in the object-oriented database, like superclass-subclass relationships and composite-component relationships between object classes, must be realised. In this paper, we describe our initial result in query optimization in an object-oriented database system. Semantic query transformation is used to preprocess the query. semantically optimized query is then translated into a query evaluation plan which comprises method invocations that …

Electronic Branching Ratio Of The Lepton, R. Ammar, Manoj Thulasidas Jan 1992

Electronic Branching Ratio Of The Lepton, R. Ammar, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Using data accumulated by the CLEO I detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured the ratio R=Γ(τ→eν¯eντ)Γ1 where Γ1 is the τ decay rate to final states with one charged particle. We find R=0.2231±0.0044±0.0073 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Together with the measured topological one-charged-particle branching fraction, this yields the branching fraction of the τ lepton to electrons, Be=0.192±0.004±0.006.

Reuse And Productivity In Integrated Computer-Aided Software Engineering: An Empirical Study, Rajiv D. Banker, Robert J. Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Growing competition in the investment banking industry has given rise to increasing demand for high functionality software applications that can be developed in a short period of time. Yet delivering such applications creates a bottleneck in software development activities. This dilemma can be addressed when firms shift to development methods that emphasize software reusability. This article examines the productivity implications of object and repository-based integrated computer-aided software engineering (ICASE) software development in the context of a major investment bank's information systems strategy. The strategy emphasizes software reusability. Our empirical results, based on data from 20 projects that delivered software for …

Connectionist Expert System With Adaptive Learning Capability, B. T. Low, Hochung Lui, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hoonheng Teh Jun 1991

Connectionist Expert System With Adaptive Learning Capability, B. T. Low, Hochung Lui, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hoonheng Teh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A neural network expert system called adaptive connectionist expert system (ACES) which will learn adaptively from past experience is described. ACES is based on the neural logic network, which is capable of doing both pattern processing and logical inferencing. The authors discuss two strategies, pattern matching ACES and rule inferencing ACES. The pattern matching ACES makes use of past examples to construct its neural logic network and fine-tunes itself adaptively during its use by further examples supplied. The rule inferencing ACES conceptualizes new rules based on the frequencies of use on the rule-based neural logic network. A new rule could …

An Efficient Semantic Query Optimization Algorithm, Hwee Hwa Pang, Hongjun Lu, Beng Chin Lu Apr 1991

An Efficient Semantic Query Optimization Algorithm, Hwee Hwa Pang, Hongjun Lu, Beng Chin Lu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An efficient semantic query optimization algorithm is proposed, in which all possible transformations are tentatively applied to the query. Instead of physically modifying the query, the transformation process classifies the predicates into imperative, optional or redundant. At the end of the transformation process, all the imperative predicates are retained while the redundant predicates are eliminated. Optional predicates are retrained or discarded based on the estimated cost/benefit of retaining them. The issue of the grouping of semantic constraints to reduce the overhead of retrieving constraints and checking whether each constraint is relevant to the current query is also addressed. Based on …

Measurements are presented of the inclusive cross section times branching fraction for the continuum production of Λc+ as observed in six different decay modes, and of a new, improved value of the Λc+ mass. The inclusive cross section times the branching fraction into pK−π+ is measured to be 10.0±1.5±1.5 pb summed over all xp. The branching fractions of Λc+ into p¯K0, p¯K0π+π−, Λπ+, Λπ+π−π+, and Ξ−K+π+ relative to that into pK−π+ are measured to be 0.44±0.07±0.05, 0.43±0.12±0.04, 0.18±0.03±0.03, 0.65±0.11±0.12, and 0.15±0.04±0.03, respectively. Trellis-Coded Multidimensional Phase Modulation, S. S. Pietrobon, Robert H. Deng Jan 1990

Trellis-Coded Multidimensional Phase Modulation, S. S. Pietrobon, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A 2L-dimensional multiple phase-shift keyed (L×MPSK) signal set is obtained by forming the Cartesian product of L two-dimensional MPSK signal sets. A systematic approach to partitioning L×MPSK signal sets that is based on block coding is used. An encoder system approach is developed. It incorporates the design of a differential precoder, a systematic convolutional encoder, and a signal set mapper. Trellis-coded L×4PSK, L×8PSK, and L×16PSK modulation schemes are found for 1⩽L⩽4 and a variety of code rates and decoder complexities, many of which are fully transparent to discrete phase rotations of the signal set. The new codes achieve asymptotic coding …

High Rate Concatenated Coding Systems Using Multidimensional Bandwidth Efficient Inner Codes, Robert H. Deng, Daniel J. Jr. Costello Oct 1989

High Rate Concatenated Coding Systems Using Multidimensional Bandwidth Efficient Inner Codes, Robert H. Deng, Daniel J. Jr. Costello

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A concatenated coding system using two-dimensional trellis-coded MPSK inner codes and Reed-Solomon outer codes for application in high-speed satellite communication systems was proposed previously by the authors (ibid., vol.37, no.5, p.420-7, May 1989). The authors extend their results to systems using symbol-oriented, multidimensional, trellis-coded MPSK inner codes. The concatenated coding systems are divided into two classes according to their achievable effective information rates. The first class uses multidimensional trellis-coded 8-PSK inner codes and achieves effective information rates around 1 b/dimension (spectral efficiency 2 b/s/Hz). The second class employs multidimensional trellis-coded 16-PSK inner codes and provides effective information rates around 1.5 …

Parity Retransmission Hybrid Arq Using Rate 1/2 Convolutional Codes On A Nonstationary Channel, L. R. Lugand, D. J. Costello, Jr., Robert H. Deng Jul 1989

Parity Retransmission Hybrid Arq Using Rate 1/2 Convolutional Codes On A Nonstationary Channel, L. R. Lugand, D. J. Costello, Jr., Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A parity retransmission hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme is proposed which uses rate 1/2 convolutional codes and Viterbi decoding. A protocol is described which is capable of achieving higher throughputs than previously proposed parity retransmission schemes. The performance analysis is based on a two-state Markov model of a nonstationary channel. This model constitutes a first approximation to a nonstationary channel. The two-state channel model is used to analyze the throughput and undetected error probability of the protocol presented when the receiver has both an infinite and a finite buffer size. It is shown that the throughput improves as the …

High Rate Concatenated Coding Systems Using Bandwidth Efficient Trellis Inner Codes, Robert H. Deng, D. J. Costello, Jr.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

High-rate concatenated coding systems with bandwidth-efficient trellis inner codes and Reed-Solomon (RS) outer codes are investigated for application in high-speed satellite communication systems. Two concatenated coding schemes are proposed. In one the inner code is decoded with soft-decision Viterbi decoding, and the outer RS code performs error-correction-only decoding (decoding without side information). In the other the inner code is decoded with a modified Viterbi algorithm, which produces reliability information along with the decoded output. In this algorithm, path metrics are used to estimate the entire information sequence, whereas branch metrics are used to provide reliability information on the decoded sequence. …
