Nickel-based superalloys have a wide range of applications in different industries due to their exceptional mechanical and corrosion-resistance properties. These alloys are widely employed in the nuclear industry. Inside a nuclear reactor, these alloys are exposed to a continuous flux of gamma-radiation. When exposed to gamma-radiation, water decomposes, resulting in the production of oxidizing and reducing species. These species have a considerable effect on the redox chemistry of the solution, which controls the overall corrosion behaviour of nickel-based superalloys.

Brown dwarfs are sub-stellar objects that form like stars but are not sufficiently massive to sustain hydrogen fusion in their cores. Characterized by cool, molecule-rich atmospheres, brown dwarfs demonstrate great diversity in spectroscopic appearance and share many properties with giant exoplanets. In this thesis I present two investigations: the first is a detailed photometric and spectroscopic study of the three most rapidly rotating brown dwarfs. The second examines a spectrum of a cool brown dwarf at unprecedented spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio to study the accuracy of theoretical model photospheres.

There are still many gaps in improving the fidelity of lunar regolith simulants to simulate more properties. This study compares some fundamental physical and mineralogical properties of three types of lunar highland regolith simulants: LHS-1, a commercial product with high mineralogical fidelity; UWO-1G, an original simulant that is the main component of LHS-1; and UWO-1S, another original product that is attempted to produce shocked grains in lunar simulants from pulverizing and mixing impact rocks sourced from the Mistastin Crater.

This thesis deals with the problem of approximating germs of real or complex analytic spaces by Nash or algebraic germs. In particular, we investigate the problem of approximating analytic germs in various ways while preserving the Hilbert-Samuel function, which is of importance in the resolution of singularities. We first show that analytic germs that are complete intersections can be arbitrarily closely approximated by algebraic germs which are complete intersections with the same Hilbert-Samuel function. We present molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of two protein targets for drug design: Triosephosphate isomerase (TIM) and Methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2). First, we studied three TIM proteins: TcTIM, TbTIM and a chimeric protein (Mut1). The first two are homologous enzymes with high sequence similarity, albeit different biophysical parameters. The chimeric protein has TbTIM’s sequence and 13 single point mutations, which are sufficient to obtain TcTIM-like behaviour in reactivation experiments. 23Na Magic Angle Spinning Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MAS SS NMR) spectroscopy has been used to study natural geological samples of halite, fluorite, and quartz to evaluate the efficacy of NMR spectroscopy for in situ fluid inclusion analysis. NaCl calibration standards yielded a strong linear correlation (R2=0.9919) for salinity, albeit only over a ~1 ppm breadth of chemical shift. Fluid inclusions were successfully identified in all three types of minerals studied using MAS NMR. Complexes of the type [M(Cp/Cp*)(MeCN)(PR2NR′2)]PF6 (M = Fe, Ru) were synthesized and/or tested towards acceptorless dehydrogenation (AD) of amines. The primary amine benzylamine can undergo AD to form a mixture of products, and a selection of catalysts were employed in an attempt to control product selectivity. As a result, trends in product distribution were observed by modifying the primary and secondary coordination spheres on the catalyst. The Canadian plan for permanent disposal of used nuclear fuel involves a used fuel container (UFC), a carbon steel vessel with a copper coating to provide the corrosion protection. The corrosion conditions for the copper layer of the UFC are expected to involve small, stagnant water volumes, pH values between 6 and 9, and a continuous flux of γ-radiation emitted from the radionuclides trapped in the fuel matrix. Self-immolative polymers (SIPs) are a subset of degradable polymers that can be triggered to fully depolymerize with a single stimulus event. This amplifying behaviour makes them ideal for real-world applications including sensors, recyclable plastics, and drug delivery vehicles. Polyglyoxylates (PGs) are a class of SIPs that can be synthesized in a one-pot reaction and designed to respond to different stimuli including light, heat, reduction, and oxidation. Clastic, upper Albian-lower Cenomanian strata were deposited in a low-accommodation backbulge depozone of the Western Canada Foreland Basin in SW Alberta. These strata are lithologically very heterogeneous and encompass a spectrum of depositional environments along an alluvial to offshore transect. These rocks are assigned, in subsurface, to the Lower Colorado Group, and in outcrop to the upper Blairmore Group. Lithological heterogeneity, as a result of rapid lateral facies changes, resulted in diverse nomenclature that obscured genetic relationships between time-equivalent strata. The Vertigo target on the southwestern JP Ross property is a gold-mineralized showing ~70 km south of Dawson City in the White Gold district, west-central Yukon Territory, Canada. Favourable gold-mineralized zones occur with pathfinder elements As-Ag-Te-Pb-Bi. This study uses digital borehole logging, petrography, electron probe microanalysis, and micro-x-ray fluorescence to evaluate the spatial, geochemical, and mineralogical distribution of Au mineralization at the Vertigo target. Petrographic and structural interpretations are contextualized with synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction on 120 drill sample pulps. The clustering of diffraction patterns has revealed characteristic signatures of Au-mineralization with structural geometries coincident with the mineralogical clusters. The …

When a laminar inclined circular jet impinges on a horizontal surface, it forms a non-circular hydraulic jump governed by a non-axisymmetric flow. In this thesis, we use the boundary-layer and thin-film approaches in the three dimensions to theoretically analyse such flow and the hydraulic jumps produced in such cases. We particularly explore the interplay among inertia, gravity, and the effective inclination angle on the non-axisymmetric flow.

Given a regular matroid $M$ and a map $\lambda\colon E(M)\to \N$, we construct a regular matroid $M_\lambda$. Then we study the distribution of the $p$-torsion of the Jacobian groups of the family $\{M_\lambda\}_{\lambda\in\N^{E(M)}}$. We approach the problem by parameterizing the Jacobian groups of this family with non-trivial $p$-torsion by the $\F_p$-rational points of the configuration hypersurface associated to $M$. In this way, we reduce the problem to counting points over finite fields. As a result, we obtain a closed formula for the proportion of these groups with non-trivial $p$-torsion as well as some estimates. In addition, we show that the …

The objectives of this thesis are twofold: to determine whether a sample of five mummies from the pilgrimage centre, Pachacamac, on the Central Coast of Peru comprised local or non-local individuals through an analysis of cranial nonmetric traits using comparative samples from the North and Central Coasts of Peru and Chile; and to test the utility of machine-learning-based image segmentation in the image analysis software, Dragonfly, to automatically segment CT scans of the mummies such that the cranial nonmetric traits are visible. The mid-infrared (IR) spectrum of almost all objects in the Universe is dominated by a set of strong emission features characteristic of a class of large organic molecules made of carbon and hydrogen known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These molecules account for ~15% of the cosmic carbon and ~20% of the total IR power of the Milky Way and star-forming galaxies. 1,8-Naphthalimide fluorophores with amino-substituents absorb and emit in the visible region. The photophysical properties of this class of fluorophores can be modulated by altering the degree of Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) in the excited state. Thus, several metal complexes with the 1,8-naphthalimide motif have been developed as cell imaging agents. How will hosts and pathogens coevolve in response to multiple types of hosts? I study this question from three different perspectives. First, I model a scenario in which hosts are categorized as female or male. Hosts invest resources in maintaining their immune system at a cost to their reproductive success, while pathogens face a trade-off between transmission and duration of infection. Importantly, female hosts are also able to vertically transmit an infection to their newborn offspring. The Mw 7.8 2012 Haida Gwaii Earthquake triggered a tsunami that highlighted the importance of tsunami hazard assessment on Canada’s Pacific coast. Stochastic source modelling serves as a valuable method to assess future tsunami hazard and has not been performed for this region. The source models characterize the uncertainty of earthquake ruptures by considering variability in fault geometry and slip heterogeneity, which, in turn, allows the consideration of a wide range of tsunami scenarios in the Haida Gwaii region. The phase-field method is a common approach to qualitative analysis of phase transitions. It allows visualizing the time evolution of a phase transition, providing valuable insight into the underlying microstructure and the dynamical processes that take place. Although the approach is applied in a diverse range of fields, from metal-forming to cardiac modelling, there are a limited number of software tools available that allow simulating any phase-field problem and that are highly accessible.
