Synthesis Of Mixed Metal Trinuclear Cluster Of Molybdenum And Tungsten And Their Electrochemistry In Ionic Liquids, Jessica Ann Davis Jan 2012

Synthesis Of Mixed Metal Trinuclear Cluster Of Molybdenum And Tungsten And Their Electrochemistry In Ionic Liquids, Jessica Ann Davis

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Research is being done to find a material to improve the efficiency of the ethanol fuel cell by using a platinum free catalyst. Mo2WO2(O2CCH3)6 cluster was synthesized using Mo2(O2CCH3)4 dimer and Na2WO4. One ionic liquid, EMImBF4, was synthesized using methylimidazolim and chloroethane in the first step, and EMImCl and NaBF4 in the second step. The electrochemical properties of the ionic liquid and the metal cluster were studied. A potential window for the EMImBF4 was found to be 3.2 V. The ionic liquid has a wider potential window, and allowed for the observation of the redox properties of Mo2WO2(O2CCH3)6. The electrochemistry …

Facile Synthesis Of Functionalized Poly (Arylene Ether Sulfone)S, Mehmet Tatli Jan 2012

Facile Synthesis Of Functionalized Poly (Arylene Ether Sulfone)S, Mehmet Tatli

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis of poly(arylene ether sulfone)s, with a pendant aryl iodide, was achieved via nucleophilic aromatic substitution (NAS) polycondensation of 3-iodo-3',5'-difluoro-diphenylsulfone (2) with Bisphenol-A. Monomer 2 was prepared by the reaction of 3, 5-difluorodiphenylsulfone with N-iodosuccinimide (NIS). Model reactions indicated that the iodo group was stable to NAS conditions. Both GC/MS analysis and NMR spectroscopy indicated quantitative displacement of the two fluorine atoms while the iodo group remained untouched. Furthermore, the modification of the iodo polymer was achieved via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction with phenyl, naphthyl, and phenylacetyl boronic acids. The thermal properties of the polymers were evaluated via DSC and …

Quantum Chemical Analysis Of The Pka's Of Alcohols And A Cellular Automata Model For The Distribution Of Gases In The Earth's Atmosphere, Edur Basha Boyinipalli Jan 2011

Quantum Chemical Analysis Of The Pka's Of Alcohols And A Cellular Automata Model For The Distribution Of Gases In The Earth's Atmosphere, Edur Basha Boyinipalli

Alcohols play important roles in many chemical and biological processes, and their acid/base behaviors are often important for these roles. In this study we ask the question, "Can the electronic properties of these compounds offer clues to the compounds' acid/base behaviors?" The study considers whether selected quantum chemical properties can be used to find correlations with the experimental pKa's of the alcohols (aliphatic and aromatic). Calculations were carried out for these alcohols using the semi-empirical RM1 method and the more advanced density functional theory (DFT) B3LYP/6-31+G* method. Significant correlations were found for several quantum chemical descriptors. It was also found …

AB3 monomer (3,4,5-Trifluoro-4'-hydroxybenzophenone) was used for polymerizations in order to mimic the combination of AB and AB2 monomers, and which has potential to facilitate concurrent polymerization and functionalization. 'Pre' and 'post' polymerization functionalization of the PEK system was done using phenol, 4-bromophenol, and 3/4-aminophenol. The solubility of the functionalized polymers was increased; and the crystallinity was decreased significantly compared to the corresponding unfunctionalized homopolymer. The polymers were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). DSC results showed that the crystallinity of the polymer was tuned by the amount …

Routes To Sydno[3,4-A]Quinoxalines, Erik Dihrkop Jan 2010

Routes To Sydno[3,4-A]Quinoxalines, Erik Dihrkop

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In the present work, the reactivity of alkyl and aryl sydnoquinoxalines was studied. Using a previously developed method, triphenylphosphine-2-(3-sydnonyl)phenylimide was prepared in a two-step process via a diazotization / azidation process of 3-(2-aminophenyl)sydnone, followed by treatment with triphenylphosphine. Due to the inability to achieve previously reported yields, a new, one-step method using Mitsunobu conditions was employed to synthesize the iminophosphorane in a good yield. A similar, brominated iminophosphorane was synthesized using the same conditions in a good yield. Treatment of both the brominated and non-brominated iminophosphoranes with alkyl and aryl isocyanates or isothiocyanates in an aza-Wittig process, gave the corresponding …

The combination of laser photolysis with infrared chemiluminescence detection has proven an effective technique for determining the propagation rate coefficients of halogen + RH chain reactions. This thesis will extend the technique to cyclic alkanes by determining the propagation rate coefficients of the Cl2/ cyclohexane chain system as well as the rate coefficient for the primary chain termination mechanism, R + O2 → RO2. The following reaction scheme is supported by the kinetic analysis: Cl2 → 2Cl Laser Photolysis Cl + RH → HCl(v) + R First Propagation Step (k1) R + …

Water Solubility Characteristics Of Hydrophobically Modified Polyethyleneimines, Jennifer N. Williams Aug 2006

Water Solubility Characteristics Of Hydrophobically Modified Polyethyleneimines, Jennifer N. Williams

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Commercially available polyethyleneimines varying in molecular weights and viscosities were synthetically modified in order to increase their hydrophobicity when dissolved in water. Used as additives for inkjet industry inks, these polymers have been designed to promote interaction between formulated inks and paper, while increasing the water-fastness of these water-soluble inks once they are dried on bond paper. Waterfastness, the ability of an ink to maintain print integrity once it becomes wet, as well as optical density, solubility, pH, molecular weight, polydispersity and viscosity are amongst the characteristics analyzed. The modifications of these polyethyleneimines (PEis) with alkyl bromides and alkyl epoxides …
