Inner Shelf Sediments Off Chesapeake Bay. Iii, Heavy Minerals, Bruce K. Goodwin, John B. Thomas
Inner Shelf Sediments Off Chesapeake Bay. Iii, Heavy Minerals, Bruce K. Goodwin, John B. Thomas
Reports
The heavy minerals in the sand sized fraction of 112 grab samples collected off the Virginia coast were analyzed for their variations in mineralogy. The main purpose was to characterize the heavy mineral suite and to delineate potentially important economic areas.

Bahamas Bibliography : A List Of Citations For Scientific, Engineering And Historical Articles Pertaining To The Bahama Islands, Carol Fang, W. Harrison
Reports
Specialized bibliographies are sometimes needed in connection with the research studies being pursued at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The Bahamas Bibliography arose out of the needs of marine geologists, biologists and physical oceanographers engaged in studies of beaches, fishes and inlet currents in the Bahama Islands. Although the present bibliography may suffer from completeness, it significantly surpasses in number of citations the only other known bibliography of like kind.
Inner Shelf Sediments Off Chesapeake Bay. I - General Lithology And Composition, Maynard M. Nichols
Inner Shelf Sediments Off Chesapeake Bay. I - General Lithology And Composition, Maynard M. Nichols
Reports
The sedimentary materials and bottom topography of more than 2400 square miles of the inner continental shelf floor north off the Chesapeake Bay entrance have been surveyed for potential mineral resources. Sediments consist of two principal types: (1) fine sand and (2) medium to coarse sand. The fine sand is grey-colored, subrounded, rich in quartz and relatively 11clean 11 and well sorted. The medium-coarse sand is typically iron-stained, rich in shell and poorly sorted. The fine sand covers inner parts of the shelf floor whereas medium to coarse sand covers seaward parts. Additionally, shell-rich medium to coarse sand occurs on …

Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Ii Virginia Waters, Pamela S. Tennyson, Susan O. Barrick, Frank J. Wojcik, William J. Hargis Jr.
Reports
The Chesapeake Bay Bibliography was initiated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in response to growing resource management problems of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. With these problems carne the realization that planning and management of such a great natural resource is an overwhelming task requiring the best available information. This bibliography, therefore, was undertaken to document existing sources of information, to help identify research and data gathering needs, and to develop a comprehensive research and information services programs for individuals interested in research on, and management of the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay region.

Special Purpose Areas In Virginia's Coastal Zone, J. B. Pleasants
Reports
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science is charged with the responsibility of advising state management agencies on matters relating to the environments and resources of the coastal zone of Virginia. Under this broad requirement, we have been specifically assigned the task of recommending an ocean-dumping policy for the Commonwealth. This paper, a survey of specially designated areas in coastal waters of the state, is designed to provide some of the background material required in the development of such a policy.

The Environmental, Resource-Use And Management Needs Of The Coast Zone, A Compendium, William J. Hargis Jr., Beverly L. Laird
Reports
As part of art extensive effort to develop a better understanding and evaluation of the problems imposed upon the Chesapeake Bay System by the activities of man and the management and informational needs related to their solution, we decided to examine a number of documents of ranging authorship and origin. The reports, papers, and manuscripts, comprising the resource materials utilized, range from the massive study entitled National Estuary Study -- recently completed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service of the U. S. Department of the Interior, to internal study manuscripts of the Institute, itself. Included were studies. aimed …

Characteristics Of Sediments In The James River Estuary, Virginia, Richard Moncure, Maynard Nichols
Reports
This report presents data on the physical and chemical characteristics of bottom sediments in the James River estuary, Virginia. The data were generated as part of a comprehensive study of sedimentation in which the initial objective was to broadly define the distribution of sediment properties.

Hydrographic Data From The Atlantic Plankton Cruises Of The R/V Pathfinder, December 1959 - December 1960, Edwin B. Joseph, William H. Massmann, John J. Norcross
Reports
The data included in this report have resulted from a series of monthly offshore cruises conducted by the Ichthyology Research Section. The cruises were made to obtain information on the distribution and abundance of pelagic eggs and larvae of fishes. Since the biological results will be reported in a series of separate papers (Joseph, Massmann and Norcross, 1961), it was felt that the raw hydrographic data shpuld be made available in a single source.
The area covered is approximately 2500 square nautical miles of the neritic zone within the 20-fathom contour. The shore line encompasses the mouth of Chesapeake Bay …
