Sediment Dynamics In The Adriatic Sea Investigated With Coupled Models, Christopher R. Sherwood, Jeffrey W. Book, (...), Courtney K. Harris, Et Al

VIMS Articles

Several large research programs focused on the Adriatic Sea in winter 2002-2003, making it an exciting place for sediment dynamics modelers (Figure 1). Investigations of atmospheric forcing and oceanic response (including wave generation and propagation, water-mass formation, stratification, and circulation), suspended material, bottom boundary layer dynamics, bottom sediment, and small-scale stratigraphy were performed by European and North American researchers participating in several projects. The goal of EuroSTRATAFORM researchers is to improve our ability to understand and simulate the physical processes that deliver sediment to the marine environment and generate stratigraphic signatures. Scientists involved in the Po and Apennine Sediment Transport …

Decline Of Yangtze River Water And Sediment Discharge: Impact From Natural And Anthropogenic Changes, S. L. Yang, K. H. Xu, J. D. Milliman, H.F. Yang, C.S. Wu Jan 2015

Decline Of Yangtze River Water And Sediment Discharge: Impact From Natural And Anthropogenic Changes, S. L. Yang, K. H. Xu, J. D. Milliman, H.F. Yang, C.S. Wu

VIMS Articles

The increasing impact of both climatic change and human activities on global river systems necessitates an increasing need to identify and quantify the various drivers and their impacts on fluvial water and sediment discharge. Here we show that mean Yangtze River water discharge of the first decade after the closing of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) (2003-2012) was 67 km(3)/yr (7%) lower than that of the previous 50 years (1950-2002), and 126 km(3)/yr less compared to the relatively wet period of pre-TGD decade (1993-2002). Most (60-70%) of the decline can be attributed to decreased precipitation, the remainder resulting from construction …

The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three tiered shoreline assessment approach. This assessment characterizes conditions that can be observed from a small boat navigating along the shoreline or by using observations made remotely at the desktop using high resolution imagery. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions:

1) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2) the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection; and 3) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes.

The Shoreline Inventory Summary Tables quantify observed conditions based on river systems, such as the combined length of linear features (e.g. shoreline miles surveyed, miles of bulkhead and revetment), the total number of point features (e.g. docks, boathouses, boat ramps) & total acres of polygon features (tidal marshes).

Optical Characterization Of Ferromagnetic And Multiferroic Thin-Film Heterostructures, Xin Ma Jan 2015

Optical Characterization Of Ferromagnetic And Multiferroic Thin-Film Heterostructures, Xin Ma

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This thesis presents optical characterization of the static and dynamic magnetic interactions in ferromagnetic and multiferroic heterostructures with time-resolved and interface-specific optical techniques. The focus of the thesis is on elucidating the underlying physics of key physical parameters and novel approaches, crucial to the performance of magnetic recording and spintronic devices.;First, time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE) is applied to investigate the spin dynamics in L10 ordered FePt thin films, where perpendicular magnetic anisotropy Ku and intrinsic Gilbert damping alpha0 are determined. Furthermore, the quadratic dependence of Ku and alpha0 on spin-orbit coupling strength xi is demonstrated, where xi is continuously …

A Model Of Carrying Capacity And Ecosystem Impacts In A Large-Scale, Bivalve-Dominated Agro-Ecosystem: Hard Clam Aquaculture In Cherrystone Inlet, Va, Michael A. Kuschner Jan 2015

A Model Of Carrying Capacity And Ecosystem Impacts In A Large-Scale, Bivalve-Dominated Agro-Ecosystem: Hard Clam Aquaculture In Cherrystone Inlet, Va, Michael A. Kuschner

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

With the recent growth of the hard clam aquaculture industry, sites of intensive aquaculture have emerged as large-scale agro-ecosystems where the success of aquaculture production is dynamically linked to ecosystem function. Large scale clam aquaculture operations are associated with a range of potential positive and negative feedbacks related to nutrient dynamics, water and sediment quality, proliferation of macroalgae, and carrying capacity. Quantitative modeling tools are needed to support system-level planning related to site selection, scale of operations, production capacity and ecosystem function. The purpose of this study was to develop a model for Cherrystone Inlet, VA, where one-third (1.9 km2) …
