Data-Centric Image Super-Resolution In Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Challenges And Opportunities, Mamata Shrestha

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Super-resolution has emerged as a crucial research topic in the field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) where it plays an important role in understanding and analysis of complex, qualitative, and quantitative characteristics of tissues at high resolutions. Deep learning techniques have been successful in achieving state-of-the-art results for super-resolution. These deep learning-based methods heavily rely on a substantial amount of data. Additionally, they require a pair of low-resolution and high-resolution images for supervised training which is often unavailable. Particularly in MRI super-resolution, it is often impossible to have low-resolution and high-resolution training image pairs. To overcome this, existing methods for …

Tree-Ring Reconstruction Of Ouachita River Streamflow, Keaton Cade Jenkins-Joyce Dec 2023

Tree-Ring Reconstruction Of Ouachita River Streamflow, Keaton Cade Jenkins-Joyce

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Ouachita River drains the Ouachita Mountains and Upper Coastal Plain in Arkansas and Louisiana. The Ouachita River is used for navigation, power generation, recreation, water supply, and wastewater treatment. The river has been prone to low flows during drought and extreme flooding, which were principal justifications for the construction of three large multipurpose dams on the stream. It is likely that the use of the Ouachita River will be stressed by future population growth, economic expansion, and climate change. For this study, tree-ring chronologies from various locations in and near the Ouachita River drainage basin were used to reconstruct …

Analyses Of Effect Indices Across Single-Case Research Designs In Counseling, Cian L. Brown Dec 2023

Analyses Of Effect Indices Across Single-Case Research Designs In Counseling, Cian L. Brown

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Single case research design (SCRD) is a common methodology used across clinical disciplines to determine treatments effectiveness by comparing treatment conditions to baseline conditions in individual cases, usually among researchers working with smaller samples. Although popular within behavioral disciplines such as special education and behavioral analysis, studies have begun to emerge in counseling. However, guidance and current understanding of the use of SCRD in counseling is limited. A content analysis of counseling journals from 2003 to 2014 yielded only 7 studies using SCRD. In 2015, the flagship counseling journal, Journal of Counseling and Development, published a special issue on the …

Patterns In Winter Stonefly Distribution Along A River Continuum And Land-Use Gradient In Northwest Arkansas Streams, Zachary Tipton

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Freshwater ecosystems are facing a crisis with extinction rates of aquatic species exceeding those of their terrestrial counterparts by up to fivefold. This decline is predominantly attributed to evolving land use patterns within watersheds, leading to chemical and physical transformations in freshwater habitats. Northwest Arkansas (NWA) represents one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States, undergoing substantial shifts in land use. Consequently, the status of aquatic life in this region remains uncertain. Addressing this concern, the latest Arkansas Wildlife Action Plan emphasizes the necessity of distribution and population data to guide conservation efforts for Species of Greatest Conservation Need …

Comparative Analysis Of Teacher Effects Parameters In Models Used For Assessing School Effectiveness: Value-Added Models & Persistence, Merlin J. Kamgue

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Longitudinal measures for students have become increasingly popular to estimate the effects of individual teachers and schools. Value-added models are one of the approaches using longitudinal data to evaluate teachers and schools. In the value-added model (VAM) literature, many statistical approaches have been developed and used to estimate teacher or school effects on student learning. This study opted to use a Bayesian multivariate model for evaluating teacher effects. The generalized persistence models can handle longitudinal data, not vertically scaled, allowing for a below-par teacher’s effects correlation across test administrations. This study first generated longitudinal students’ test score data and used …

Quantification Of Dye Degradation On Titanium Dioxide-Based Membranes, Elizabeth Carol Wood Dec 2023

Quantification Of Dye Degradation On Titanium Dioxide-Based Membranes, Elizabeth Carol Wood

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the dye degradation on the titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based membranes. While many studies have shown photocatalytic degradation of dye on TiO2 in solution, few studies have been reported on the solid TiO2 substrate. In this work, a new method is developed to quantify the dye degradation on TiO2-based membranes. A hydrothermal method is used to synthesize the photocatalytic TiO2 nanofibers; vacuum filtration is applied to fabricate a self-assembled membrane. Silver is incorporated into the nanofibers through in situ reduction before vacuum filtration to fabricate Ag/TiO2 membrane in an attempt to red shift the …

Investigation Of The Flow Field In The Jack Rabbit Ii Mock Urban Environment Field Tests Using A 1:50 Scale Wind Tunnel Model, Paulo Victor De Freitas Lopes

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Accidental release of toxic chemicals can put workers and nearby populations at significant risk. Consequence assessment of accidents in urban environments is of particular interest. Urban geometries create wind channels between buildings, along with particularly dangerous areas downwind of buildings, where near-stagnant flow is present. Furthermore, recirculation zones can be formed between buildings, trapping high concentrations of toxic gases at ground level, particularly for denser-than-air gases. In 2015, the Department of Homeland Security conducted the Jack Rabbit II Field Test (JR-II) at Dugway Proving Ground, UT. During JR-II, chlorine was released at the center of a Mock Urban Environment (MUE) …

Verification Of Astm Centrifugation Equations For Soil Suction Determination, Esteban Maclein Miranda Pinzon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The unit correction constant (B) in the ASTM D6836 standard needs to be evaluated. The B-value was proposed to be 0.00548 instead of 0.00553. This apparent discrepancy led to an investigation comparing the predicted and measured suction values for high air entry (HAE) ceramic disks. A Beckman-Coulter Model J6-MI six-bay centrifuge and a WP4C Dewpoint Potentiameter were used in the testing program. HAE ceramic disks rated with bubbling pressures of 3-bar and 5-bar were used as analogue soil specimens. The HAE ceramic disks were spun in the small-scale centrifuge to apply prescribed suction amounts and then placed in the WP4C …

A Comparative Study Of Techniques For Non-Monotonic Dependence With Emphasis On Sensitivity To Sample Size, Noise Level And Computational Attributes, Fariha Tasnim Aug 2023

A Comparative Study Of Techniques For Non-Monotonic Dependence With Emphasis On Sensitivity To Sample Size, Noise Level And Computational Attributes, Fariha Tasnim

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Evaluating association between variables is often of interest by many researchers. To serve this purpose, different association measures have been developed. However, type of relation between variables affects the degree of relationship. Hence, detection of the rela- tionship between variables is germane to measuring the correlation coefficient. With that mindset, here we explored six non-monotonic measure of association techniques and com- pared them with three classical approaches. Due to inconsistency in definition and range of different techniques, it is not feasible to compare the correlation estimates as their nature of variability differ. Therefore, we used permutation test based on Monte …

Comparing Predictive Performance Of Garch And Stochastic Volatility Models, Swapnaneel Nath Aug 2023

Comparing Predictive Performance Of Garch And Stochastic Volatility Models, Swapnaneel Nath

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper compares the predictive performance of two commonly used financial models, the Generalized Auto-Regressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model, and the Stochastic Volatility model. Both techniques are used in the finance literature to model returns on an asset; the main difference between the two is that the former holds volatility as deterministic, whereas the latter treats it as a stochastic component. Three 10-year periods (2006-15, 2008-17, and 2010-19) of returns of the S&P-500 Index are used to train the two models. The parameter estimation is done using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo. Then, using Sequential Monte Carlo updates, returns for 2016, 2018, …

Towards Multi-Modal Explainable Video Understanding, Kashu Yamazaki Aug 2023

Towards Multi-Modal Explainable Video Understanding, Kashu Yamazaki

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a novel approach to video understanding by emulating human perceptual processes and creating an explainable and coherent storytelling representation of video content. Central to this approach is the development of a Visual-Linguistic (VL) feature for an interpretable video representation and the creation of a Transformer-in-Transformer (TinT) decoder for modeling intra- and inter-event coherence in a video. Drawing inspiration from the way humans comprehend scenes by breaking them down into visual and non-visual components, the proposed VL feature models a scene through three distinct modalities. These include: (i) a global visual environment, providing a broad contextual understanding of …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Wet Mountains of Colorado are underlain by exhumed Proterozoic metamorphic rock that lies north of the recently identified 1.46 to 1.40 Ga Picuris orogen in northern New Mexico. The Picuris orogen is inferred to have formed in response to a Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.49-1.40 Ga) contractional to transpressional event extrapolated to be regional in extent. It has been proposed that the Picuris orogen composes the westernmost tectonic segment of the Pinware-Baraboo-Picuris orogen that formed along an evolving convergent margin that becomes younger from northeast to southwest. This study is focused on the record of high temperature deformation, metamorphism, and plutonism …

Interpolation Problems And The Characterization Of The Hilbert Function, Bryant Xie Jul 2023

Interpolation Problems And The Characterization Of The Hilbert Function, Bryant Xie

Mathematical Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

In mathematics, it is often useful to approximate the values of functions that are either too awkward and difficult to evaluate or not readily differentiable or integrable. To approximate its values, we attempt to replace such functions with more well-behaving examples such as polynomials or trigonometric functions. Over the algebraically closed field C, a polynomial passing through r distinct points with multiplicities m1, ..., mr on the affine complex line in one variable is determined by its zeros and the vanishing conditions up to its mi − 1 derivative for each point. A natural question would then be to consider …

Dpd Guided Insight On The Formation Process Of Polyethersulfone Membranes By Nonsolvent Induced Phase Separation And The Effects Of Additives, Eric Ledieu

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD), a coarse grain simulation method, was applied to the membrane formation process of non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) to gain further insight on the mechanism of certain variables and how they affect the final morphology. NIPS involves two solutions, an organic polymer dissolved in an organic solvent colloquially called the dope and an aqueous coagulation bath, brought into contact with one another. The solvents then mix, causing the polymer to fall out of solution as an asymmetric membrane with a dense surface layer and a more open subsurface layer in response to the decreasing solubility. Polyethersulfone …
