Combinatorial Stochastic Processes , Jim Pitman Dec 2005

Combinatorial Stochastic Processes , Jim Pitman

Jim Pitman

This is a set of lecture notes for a course given at the St. Flour summer school in July 2002. The theme of the course is the study of various combinatorial models of random partitions and random trees, and the asymptotics of these models related to continuous parameter stochastic processes. Following is a list of the main topics treated: models for random combinatorial structures, such as trees, forests, permutations, mappings, and partitions; probabilistic interpretations of various combinatorial notions e.g. Bell polynomials, Stirling numbers, polynomials of binomial type, Lagrange inversion; Kingman's theory of exchangeable random partitions and random discrete distributions; connections …

Controlled Generation Of Hard And Easy Bayesian Networks: Impact On Maximal Clique Size In Tree Clustering, Ole J. Mengshoel, David C. Wilkins, Dan Roth Dec 2005

Controlled Generation Of Hard And Easy Bayesian Networks: Impact On Maximal Clique Size In Tree Clustering, Ole J. Mengshoel, David C. Wilkins, Dan Roth

Ole J Mengshoel

This article presents and analyzes algorithms that systematically generate random Bayesian networks of varying difficulty levels, with respect to inference using tree clustering. The results are relevant to research on efficient Bayesian network inference, such as computing a most probable explanation or belief updating, since they allow controlled experimentation to determine the impact of improvements to inference algorithms. The results are also relevant to research on machine learning of Bayesian networks, since they support controlled generation of a large number of data sets at a given difficulty level. Our generation algorithms, called BPART and MPART, support controlled but random construction …

Exchange Coupling And Contribution Of Induced Orbital Angular Momentum Of Low-Spin Fe^3+ Ions To Magnetic Anisotropy In Cyanide-Bridged Fe2m2 Molecular Magnets: Spin-Polarized Density-Functional Calculations, Stephen Holmes, Kyungwha Park Dec 2005

Exchange Coupling And Contribution Of Induced Orbital Angular Momentum Of Low-Spin Fe^3+ Ions To Magnetic Anisotropy In Cyanide-Bridged Fe2m2 Molecular Magnets: Spin-Polarized Density-Functional Calculations, Stephen Holmes, Kyungwha Park

Stephen Holmes

Electronic structure and intramolecular exchange constants are calculated for three cyanide-bridged molecular magnets, Tp#1;FeIII#1;CN3MII#1;DMF4#4;2#1;OTf2 ·2DMF #1;MII=Mn,Co,Ni #1;abbreviated as Fe2Mn2, Fe2Co2, and Fe2Ni2 that have been recently synthesized, within a generalized-gradient approximation in spin-polarized density-functional theory #1;DFT. Here Tp#1;=C3#1;CH32HN2#4;3BH, OTf =O3SCF3, and DMF=HCON#1;CH32. Due to strong ligand fields present in the Tp#1;FeIII#1;CN3#4; − units, the Fe3+ ions exhibit a low ground-state spin of S=1/2. Our calculations show that the metal ions in the Fe2Mn2 molecule interact antiferromagnetically via cyanide ligands, while those in the Fe2Co2 and Fe2Ni2 molecule interact ferromagnetically. The calculations also suggest that the smallest gaps between the highest …

Environmental Education In Action For The Future, Sandra Wooltorton, Dora Marinova Dec 2005

Environmental Education In Action For The Future, Sandra Wooltorton, Dora Marinova

Sandra Wooltorton

We have known for quite a while that the planet we live on is under ecological stress. The beginning of this century however and 2006 in particular saw renewed concerns about humanity facing environmental challenges, threats and crises related to facts and perspectives on climate change. The economics of it as revealed in the Stern Review (2006) show that there is overwhelming scientific evidence that we must take action right now so that climate change will not increase its effect on the “the basic elements of life for people around the world – access to water, food production, health, and …

The Worsley Energy Challenge To Reduce Energy Consumption: Report On The Project Start-Up, Sandra Wooltorton, Richard Jeffreys Dec 2005

The Worsley Energy Challenge To Reduce Energy Consumption: Report On The Project Start-Up, Sandra Wooltorton, Richard Jeffreys

Sandra Wooltorton

The Worsley Alumina Energy Challenge (WAEC) is an innovative sustainability education project that connects four schools, the South West branch of the Australian Association of Environmental Education (AAEE), two universities and a corporation, Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd (Worsley). As part of its corporate sustainability
responsibility, Worsley is providing renewable energy systems to the schools including photovoltaic, wind and biodiesel equipment. The type and size of the systems are based on each school's physical location, size and local community context. In turn, the schools have committed themselves to attempting to reduce their power consumption by 20% per capita over a five-year …

Regression With Signals And Images As Predictors, Philip T. Reiss Dec 2005

Regression With Signals And Images As Predictors, Philip T. Reiss

Philip T. Reiss

Signal regression and image regression, in which the outcomes are scalars and the predictors are one-dimensional signals or multidimensional images, are of interest in many scientific fields. The principal statistical challenge is how to reduce the dimension of the predictors in what would otherwise be a severely ill-posed problem. A pair of novel methods, functional principal component regression (FPCR) and functional partial least squares (FPLS), combine two existing approaches to the dimension reduction problem: selection of most relevant components, as is done in ordinary principal component regression (PCR) and partial least squares (PLS), and restriction of the coefficient function to …
