A new iron fluorophosphate of the composition, [C6N4H21] [Fe2F2(HPO4)3][H2PO4]·2H2O, I. has been prepared by the hydrothermal route. General conditions are formulated that allow us to determine which quantum phase transitions in itinerant electron systems can be described by a local Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson (LGW) theory solely in terms of the order parameter. A crucial question is the degree to which the order parameter fluctuations couple to other soft modes. Three general classes of zero-wave-number order parameters, in the particle-hole spin-singlet and spin-triplet channels and in the particle-particle channel, respectively, are considered. It is shown that the particle-hole spin-singlet class does allow for a local LGW theory, while the other two classes do not. The implications of this result for …

Low-energy electron emission spectra are studied in collisions of 3.6 MeV/amu Au53+ ions with neon and argon atoms for well-defined degrees of target ionization. We calculate doubly differential cross sections as functions of the recoil-ion charge state in the continuum-distorted-wave with eikonal initial-state approximation using a binomial analysis of the total and differential ionization probabilities, and compare them with the present and with previously published experimental data. Very good agreement is found for the single-ionization spectra and for double ionization of neon, while some discrepancies are observed in the spectra for double and triple ionization of argon.

Theoretical results from multistate semirelativistic Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculations and two first-order distorted-wave calculations are presented for electron-impact excitation of krypton from the (4p55s) J = 0,2 metastable states to the (4p55s) and (4p55p) manifolds. Except for a few cases, in which the method to account for relativistic effects becomes surprisingly critical, fair overall agreement between the predictions from the various theoretical models is achieved for intermediate and high energies. However, significant discrepancies remain with the few available experimental data.

The goal of this article is to study the boundary layer of wall bounded flows in a channel at small viscosity when the boundaries are uniformly non-characteristic, i.e., there is injection and/or suction everywhere at the boundary. Following earlier work on the boundary layer for linearized Navier-Stokes equations in the case where the boundaries are characteristic (non-slip at the boundary and non-permeable), we consider here the case where the boundary is permeable and thus non-characteristic. the form of the boundary layer and convergence results are derived in two cases: linearized equation and full nonlinear equations. The Mössbauer spectra of Ho2Fe17 and Ho2Fe17D3.8 have been measured between 4.2 and 295 K and analyzed with a model which takes into account both the disordered nonstoichiometric hexagonal Th2Ni17-like structure and the basal orientation of the iron magnetic moments. The isomer shifts of the five crystallographically inequivalent iron sites in both Ho2Fe17 and Ho2Fe17D3.8 follow the sequence of Wigner-Seitz cell volumes and their temperature dependence follows the typical second-order Doppler shift. The structural and magnetic properties of Tm2Fe17 and Tm2Fe17D3.2 are investigated by means of x-ray-diffraction, thermal, and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, and iron-57 Mössbauer spectroscopy. Both compounds crystallize in a hexagonal P63/mmc space group with a Th2Ni17-like structure. Deuterium insertion into Tm2Fe17 induces large increases in the unit-cell volume, the saturation magnetization, and the ordering temperature. The unit-cell expansion is anisotropic, with a larger increase in the a lattice parameter than the c lattice parameter. A spin reorientation is observed at 90 K …

A kinematically complete experiment for simultaneous ionization of a projectile and target has been performed for 3.6 MeV/u C2+ on He collisions measuring the final vector momenta of the He1+ recoil ion and of two electrons (projectile, target) in coincidence with the emerging C3+ projectile. The feasibility of an event-by-event separation of the various reaction channels, among them the ionization of C2+ by the interaction with a quasifree target electron, is demonstrated in agreement with six-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations, paving the way to kinematically complete electron-ion scattering experiments.

Results of full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital generalized gradient approximation calculations of the band structure and boron electric field gradients (EFG's) for the new medium-Tc superconductor MgB2 and related diborides MB2, M = Be, Al, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mo, and Ta are reported. The boron EFG variations are found to be related to specific features of their band structure and particularly to the M-B hybridization. The strong charge anisotropy at the B site in MgB2 is completely defined by the valence electrons - a property which sets MgB2 apart from other diborides. The boron …

Whether for military, research (space, accelerator physics) and/or civilian use, risk avoidance against radiation-induced damage is not possible with COTS parts. Thus the sensible approach is risk management. We recommend a sensible risk management approach as follows: 1) know the radiation environment of the intended application to the extent possible; 2) know the effects of ionizing radiation on the component(s) of interest; 3) know the requirements of the application; 4) identify the candidate or chosen components; 5) test the components; 6) design-in safety factor margins to the extent possible.

In this paper, we address the issue of transmission power control in wireless ad-hoc networks. In general, it is assumed that the minimum transmission power required to keep the network connected achieves the optimal throughput performance in an ad-hoc network. In contrast, we show that using the minimal transmission range might not always result in optimal throughput performance. Using both throughput and throughput per unit energy as the optimization criteria, we demonstrate that the optimal transmission power is generically a function of the number of stations, the network size, and the traffic load. The thermal degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been studied extensively. It is well accepted that the degradation process is a radical chain reaction involving initiation, depropagation, transfer, and termination reactions. In the degradation process, the factors having observable effects on the decomposition behavior include molecular mass, polydispersity, tacticity, and sample dimensions. The effects of tacticity on the degradation behavior of PMMA were investigated by Kashiwagi et al., Jellinek et al. And Chiamtore et al. The results indicated that both isotactic and syndiotactic PMMA have similar decomposition pathways and activation energies. Isotactic PMMA will decompose at a slightly lower temperature …

Adaptive information filtering is concerned with filtering information streams in dynamic (changing) environments. The changes may occur both on the transmission side — the nature of the streams can change — and on the reception side — the interests of the user (or group of users) can change. While information filtering and information retrieval have a lot in common, this dissertation’s primary concern is with the differences. The interaction between two polymer layers, especially adhesion between them, plays an important role in polymer processing and other applications. Detailed knowledge of the molecular structure and dynamics of polymer interfaces, and how they relate to macroscopic mechanical properties, should help designers construct more functional systems. Unfortunately, there have been few studies where both molecular and macroscopic studies have been performed on similar systems. Control of spontaneous emission in a microcavity has many important applications, e.g. improvement of the efficiency of light emitting devices. InAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in microdisks are ideal systems for spontaneous emission control. The whispering gallery (WG) modes of microdisks have low volume and high quality factor. The homogeneous linewidth of InAs quantum dots is smaller than the spectral width of WG modes. Thus, a large enhancement of the spontaneous emission rates should be expected for QDs coupled to WG modes. Magnetic interactions in perovskite compounds of the type La1-xSrxMO3-δ (M=3d transition such as Mn and Fe) are presumed to arise through a super exchange between 3d electrons of the magnetic ions via oxygen orbitals. The magnetic structure of La0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ has been studied with neutron diffraction. Oxygen vacancies were created by annealing samples under various gases including N2, air and mixtures of CO/CO2. Since the giant magnetocaloric effect is encountered in a ferromagnetic Gd5Si2Ge2 alloy near room temperature it is considered as a suitable material for magnetic refrigerator applications. Also a commensurate structural transition occurs at the magnetic transition temperature and there is a good correlation between the crystal structure and magnetic properties. Such observations have triggered numerous experimental studies on similar rare earth alloys and compounds. We calculate perturbative quantum gravity corrections to eternal two-dimensional black holes. We estimate the leading corrections to the AdS2 black hole entropy and determine the quantum modification of N-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime.

A multilayer neural network (NN) controller in discrete-time is designed to deliver a desired tracking performance for a class of nonlinear systems with input deadzones. This multilayer NN controller has an adaptive critic NN architecture with two NNs for compensating the deadzone nonlinearity and a third NN for approximating the dynamics of the nonlinear system. A reinforcement learning scheme in discrete-time is proposed for the adaptive critic NN deadzone compensator, where the learning is performed based on a certain performance measure, which is supplied from a critic. Motion is an important cue for video understanding and is widely used in many semantic video analyses. We present a new motion representation scheme in which motion in a video is represented by the responses of frames to a set of motion filters. Each of these filters is designed to be most responsive to a type of dominant motion. Then we employ hidden Markov models (HMMs) to characterize the motion patterns based on these features and thus classify basketball video into 16 events.
