Algal Biomass As A Binding Agent For The Densification Of Miscanthus, Sunil Thapa, Daniel B. Johnson, Peter Ping Liu, Thomas Canam
Algal Biomass As A Binding Agent For The Densification Of Miscanthus, Sunil Thapa, Daniel B. Johnson, Peter Ping Liu, Thomas Canam
Thomas Canam
Purpose: Lignocellulosic biomass has been regarded as an important future energy source due to its excessive availability; however, the wide application of this material for many applications is restricted by the high costs associated with densification, transportation, thermo-chemical pretreatment and conversion. In order to increase the density of lignocellulosic biomass, it is typically compressed into pellets or briquettes. This frequently requires the addition of additives, which may negatively impact the economics of the process. Environmentally-friendly binding agents that can be obtained inexpensively are therefore desirable. This study examines the change in physicochemical properties of densified Miscanthus straw where algae were …
Extracellular Gluco-Oligosaccharide Degradation By Caulobacter Crescentus, Gerald N. Presley, Matthew J. Payea, Logan R. Hurst, Annie E. Egan, Brandon S. Martin, Gopal R. Periyannan
Extracellular Gluco-Oligosaccharide Degradation By Caulobacter Crescentus, Gerald N. Presley, Matthew J. Payea, Logan R. Hurst, Annie E. Egan, Brandon S. Martin, Gopal R. Periyannan
Gopal R. Periyannan
The oligotrophic bacterium Caulobacter crescentus has the ability to metabolize various organic molecules, including plant structural carbohydrates, as a carbon source. The nature of β-glucosidase (BGL)-mediated gluco-oligosaccharide degradation and nutrient transport across the outer membrane in C. crescentus was investigated. All gluco-oligosaccharides tested (up to celloheptose) supported growth in M2 minimal media but not cellulose or CM-cellulose. The periplasmic and outer membrane fractions showed highest BGL activity, but no significant BGL activity was observed in the cytosol or extracellular medium. Cells grown in cellobiose showed expression of specific BGLs and TonB-dependent receptors (TBDRs). Carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone lowered the rate of …

Silica cryogels (cryosilicas) in a powder state were synthesized with different concentrations of fumed silica A-300 (CA-300 = 5-20 wt.%), sonicated in aqueous suspension, then frozen at -14 oC at different pressures in a high-pressure stainless steel reactor (a freezing bomb), and dried in air at room temperature. To analyze the effects of low temperature and high pressure, samples were also prepared at -14 oC or room temperature and standard pressure. The structural and adsorption properties of the powder materials were studied using nitrogen adsorption, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, low-temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy and thermally stimulated depolarization …

Symmetric Random Walks On Homeo+(R), B. Deroin, V. Klepstyn, A. Navas, Kamlesh Parwani
Kamlesh Parwani
We study symmetric random walks on finitely generated groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the real line. We establish an oscillation property for the induced Markov chain on the line that implies a weak form of recurrence. Except for a few special cases, which can be treated separately, we prove a property of "global stability at a finite distance": roughly speaking, there exists a compact interval such that any two trajectories get closer and closer whenever one of them returns to the compact interval. The probabilistic techniques employed here lead to interesting results for the study of group actions on the …

The microwave spectrum (6500–18 500 MHz) of 1-fluoro-1-silacyclopentane, c-C4H8SiHF has been recorded and 87 transitions for the 28Si, 29Si, 30Si, and 13C isotopomers have been assigned for a single conformer. Infrared spectra (3050-350 cm−1) of the gas and solid and Raman spectrum (3100-40 cm−1) of the liquid have also been recorded. The vibrational data indicate the presence of a single conformer with no symmetry which is consistent with the twist form. Ab initio calculations with a variety of basis sets up to MP2(full)/aug-cc-pVTZ predict the envelope-axial and envelope-equatorial conformers to be saddle points with nearly the same energies but much …

Historic And Contemporary Trends Of The Conservation Reserve Program And Ring-Necked Pheasants In South Dakota, Chris Laingen
Historic And Contemporary Trends Of The Conservation Reserve Program And Ring-Necked Pheasants In South Dakota, Chris Laingen
Chris Laingen
Over the past century, the interactions between agricultural land use and government cropland retirement programs have affected pheasant population change. Two government land retirement programs that returned croplands to grasslands, Soil Bank in the 1960s and the current Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), help to illustrate these connections. From 2007 to 2010, South Dakota lost 41% of its CRP lands and experienced an 18% decline in pheasants per mile. However, because of where CRP expirations have occurred and where pheasant populations are found , some regional variability is seen. Western South Dakota (Region 1) had an 80% increase in pheasants per …

A Sketch-Based Language For Representing Uncertainty In The Locations Of Origin Of Herbarium Specimens, Barry J. Kronenfeld, Andrew Weeks
A Sketch-Based Language For Representing Uncertainty In The Locations Of Origin Of Herbarium Specimens, Barry J. Kronenfeld, Andrew Weeks
Barry J. Kronenfeld
Uncertainty fields have been suggested as an appropriate model for retrospective georeferencing of herbarium specimens. Previous work has focused only on automated data capture methods, but techniques for manual data specification may be able to harness human spatial cognition skills to quickly interpret complex spatial propositions. This paper develops a formal modeling language by which location uncertainty fields can be derived from manually sketched features. The language consists of low-level specification of critical probability isolines from which a surface can be uniquely derived, and high-level specification of features and predicates from which low-level isolines can be derived. In a case …
Harmonic Functions On R-Covered Foliations And Group Actions On The Circle, Sergio Fenley, Renato Feres, Kamlesh Parwani
Harmonic Functions On R-Covered Foliations And Group Actions On The Circle, Sergio Fenley, Renato Feres, Kamlesh Parwani
Kamlesh Parwani
Let (M,F) be a compact codimension-one foliated manifold whose leaves are equipped with Riemannian metrics, and consider continuous functions on M that are harmonic along the leaves of F. If every such function is constant on leaves we say that (M,F) has the Liouville property. Our main result is that codimension-one foliated bundles over compact negatively curved manifolds satisfy the Liouville property. Related results for R-covered foliations, as well as for discrete group actions and discrete harmonic functions, are also established.
A Plotless Density Estimator Based On The Asymptotic Limit Of Ordered Distance Estimation Values, Barry J. Kronenfeld
A Plotless Density Estimator Based On The Asymptotic Limit Of Ordered Distance Estimation Values, Barry J. Kronenfeld
Barry J. Kronenfeld
Estimation of tree density from point-tree distances is an attractive option for quick inventory of new sites, but estimators that are unbiased in clustered and dispersed situations have not been found. Noting that bias of an estimator derived from distances to the kth nearest neighbor from a random point tends to decrease with increasing k, a method is proposed for estimating the limit of an asymptotic function through a set of ordered distance estimators. A standard asymptotic model is derived from the limiting case of a clustered distribution. The proposed estimator is evaluated against 13 types of simulated generating processes, …

A Tikz Tutorial: Generating Graphics In The Spirit Of Tex, Andrew Mertz, William Slough
Andrew Mertz
TikZ is a system which can be used to specify graphics of very high quality. For example, accurate place- ment of picture elements, use of TEX fonts, ability to incorporate mathematical typesetting, and the possi- bility of introducing macros can be viewed as positive factors of this system. The syntax uses an amal- gamation of ideas from METAFONT, METAPOST, PSTricks, and SVG, allowing its users to \program" their desired graphics. The latest revision to TikZ introduces many new features to an already feature- packed system, as evidenced by its 560-page user manual. Here, we present a tutorial overview of this …

Calculation Of Phonon Dispersion In Semiconductor Nanostructures: An Undergraduate Computational Project, Jie Zou
Jie Zou
This paper discusses an undergraduate research project that involves the numerical calculation of phonon dispersion in semiconductor nanostructures. Phonon dispersion is calculated in the elastic continuum approximation by applying a finite-difference method to solving the elastic wave equation with boundary conditions. Students did simulations for two nanostructures: a free-standing GaN thin film and a free-standing AlN/GaN/AlN heterostructure. A comparison of these two structures helps students understand the effect of boundary conditions on the nature of the phonon dispersion. The project is related to current research in phonon thermal transport in semiconductor nanostructures and nanodevices.
C^1 Actions Of The Mapping Class Group On The Circle, Kamlesh Parwani
C^1 Actions Of The Mapping Class Group On The Circle, Kamlesh Parwani
Kamlesh Parwani
Let S be a connected orientable surface with finitely many punctures, finitely many boundary components, and genus at least 6. Then any C^1 action of the mapping class group of S on the circle is trivial. The techniques used in the proof of this result permit us to show that products of Kazhdan groups and certain lattices cannot have C^1 faithful actions on the circle. We also prove that for n > 5, any C^1 action of Aut(F_n) or Out(F_n) on the circle factors through an action of Z/2Z.

The Two Variable Substitution Problem For Free Products Of Groups, Leo P. Comerford, Charles C. Edmunds
The Two Variable Substitution Problem For Free Products Of Groups, Leo P. Comerford, Charles C. Edmunds
Leo Comerford
We consider equations of the form W(x,y) = U with U an element of a free product G of groups. We show that with suitable algorithmic conditions on the free factors of G, one can effectively determine whether or not the equations have solutions in G. We also show that under certain hypotheses on the free factors of G and the equation itself, the equation W(x,y) = U has only finitely many solutions, up to the action of the stabilizer of W(x,y) in Aut().

Fixed Points Of Abelian Actions On S2, John Franks, Michael Handel, Kamlesh Parwani
Kamlesh Parwani
We prove that if $F$ is a finitely generated abelian group of orientation preserving $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of $R^2$ which leaves invariant a compact set then there is a common fixed point for all elements of $F.$ We also show that if $F$ is any abelian subgroup of orientation preserving $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of $S^2$ then there is a common fixed point for all elements of a subgroup of $F$ with index at most two.

Graphics With Pgf And Tikz, Andrew Mertz, William Slough

Beautiful and expressive documents often require beautiful and expressive graphics. PGF and its front-end TikZ walk a fine line between power, portability and usability, giving a TEX-like approach to graphics. While PGF and TikZ are extensively documented, first-time users may prefer learning about these packages using a collection of graduated examples. The examples presented here cover a wide spectrum of use and provide a starting point for exploration.

Programming With Perltex, Andrew Mertz, William Slough
Programming With Perltex, Andrew Mertz, William Slough
Andrew Mertz
PerlTEX couples two well-known worlds—the Perl programming language and the LATEX typesetting system. The resulting system provides users with a way to augment LATEX macros with Perl code, thereby adding programming capabilities to LATEX that would otherwise be difficult to express. In this paper, we illus- trate the use of PerlTEX with a variety of examples and explain the associated Perl code. Although Perl may perhaps be best known for its string manipula- tion capabilities, we demonstrate how PerlTEX indirectly provides support for “programming” graphics through the use of additional packages such as TikZ.
