Human Adaptive Responses To Catastrophic Landscape Disruptions During The Holocene, Numundo, Png, Jeffrey Parr, William Boyd, Vicki Harriott, Robin Torrence

Jeffrey Parr

Prehistoric land use and social activity in West New Britain, PNG, are well documented, although the landscapes – largely shaped by catastrophic volcanic eruptions – in which these took place, and the relationships people had with these landscapes, are poorly understood. We define the evolving landscape at Numundo, from prior to the Witori-Kimbe 2 eruption (W-K2, ca. 3600 BP) to after the Witori-Kimbe 4 eruption (W-K4, ca. 1400 BP), using fossil phytolith and coral evidence at eight archaeological sites to provide environmental evidence of the human responses to periodic catastrophic events. From ca. 5900 to 3600 BP, all the sites …

Iron(Iii) Accumulations In Inland Saline Waterways, Hunter Valley, Australia: Mineralogy, Micromorphology And Pore-Water Geochemistry, Lloyd Isaacson, Edward Burton, Richard Bush, David Mitchell, Scott Johnston, Bennett Macdonald, Leigh Sullivan, Ian White

Associate Professor Edward D Burton

Discharge of Fe(II)-rich groundwaters into surface-waters results in the accumulation of Fe(III)-minerals in salinized sand-bed waterways of the Hunter Valley, Australia. The objective of this study was to characterise the mineralogy, micromorphology and pore-water geochemistry of these Fe(III) accumulations. Pore-waters had a circumneutral pH (6.2–7.2), were sub-oxic to oxic (Eh 59–453 mV), and had dissolved Fe(II) concentrations up to 81.6 mg L−1. X-ray diffraction (XRD) on natural and acid-ammonium-oxalate (AAO) extracted samples indicated a dominance of 2-line ferrihydrite in most samples, with lesser amounts of goethite, lepidocrocite, quartz, and alumino-silicate clays. The majority of Fe in the samples was bound …

Changes In Water Quality Following Tidal Inundation Of Coastal Lowland Acid Sulfate Soil Landscapes, Scott Johnston, Richard Bush, Leigh Sullivan, Edward Burton, C Smith, Michelle Martens, Angus Mcelnea, Colin Ahern, Bernard Powell, Luisa Stephens, Steven Wilbraham, Simon Van Heel

Associate Professor Edward D Burton

This study examines the remediation of surface water quality in a severely degraded coastal acid sulfate soil landscape. The remediation strategy consisted of partial restoration of marine tidal exchange within estuarine creeks and incremental tidal inundation of acidified soils, plus strategic liming of drainage waters. Time-series water quality and climatic data collected over 5 years were analysed to assess changes in water quality due to this remediation strategy. A time-weighted rainfall function (TWR) was generated from daily rainfall data to integrate the effects of antecedent rainfall on shallow groundwater levels in a way that was relevant to acid export dynamics. …

Iron-Monosulfide Oxidation In Natural Sediments: Resolving Microbially Mediated S Transformations Using Xanes, Electron Microscopy, And Selective Extractions, Edward Burton, Richard Bush, Leigh Sullivan, Rosalie Hocking, David Mitchell, Scott Johnston, R Fitzpatrick, M Raven, S Mcclure, L Yang

Associate Professor Edward D Burton

Iron-monosulfide oxidation and associated S transformations in a natural sediment were examined by combining selective extractions, electron microscopy and S K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The sediment examined in this study was collected from a waterway receiving acid−sulfate soil drainage. It contained a high acid-volatile sulfide content (1031 μmol g−1), reflecting an abundance of iron-monosulfide. The iron-monosulfide speciation in the initial sediment sample was dominated by nanocrystalline mackinawite (tetragonal FeS). At near-neutral pH and an O2 partial pressure of 0.2 atm, the mackinawite was found to oxidize rapidly, with a half-time of 29 ± 2 min. This oxidation …

A Simple And Inexpensive Chromium-Reducible Sulfur Method For Acidsulfate Soils, Edward Burton, Leigh Sullivan, Richard Bush, Scott Johnston, Annabelle Keene Jan 2010

A Simple And Inexpensive Chromium-Reducible Sulfur Method For Acidsulfate Soils, Edward Burton, Leigh Sullivan, Richard Bush, Scott Johnston, Annabelle Keene

Associate Professor Edward D Burton

A new chromium-reducible sulfur (CRS) method suitable for the quantification of reduced inorganic S (RIS) in acid-sulfate soils is presented. The new method utilises the reduction of RIS by an acidic Cr(II) solution within a sealed reaction chamber and diffusion of the produced H2S(g) into an alkaline Zn solution. It offers rapid sample processing times, without the need for large volumes of high-purity N2(g) or for specialized, expensive glassware. Examination of pyrite-talc mixtures containing up to 11.8% pyrite, revealed that the method achieves 95–98% recovery of RIS. A comparison between CRS measured by the new diffusion-based …

Characteristics Of Methyl Cellulose-Nh4no3-Peg Electrolyte And Application In Fuel Cells, Siti Rohana Majid, Shuhaimi N. E. A., Alias N. A., Kufian M. Z., Arof A. K.

Siti Rohana Majid

We report the viability of methyl cellulose (MC) as a membrane in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Methyl cellulose serves as the polymer host, ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) as the doping salt and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as plasticizer. Conductivity measurement was carried out using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The room temperature conductivity of pure MC film is is (3.08 +/- 0.63) x 10(-11)S cm(-1). The conductivity increased to (2.10 +/- 0.37) x 10(-6)S cm(-1) on addition of 25 wt.% NH4NO3. By adding 15 wt.% of PEG 200 to the highest conducting sample in the MC-NH4NO3 system, the conductivity was further …

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis: Synthesis Of Dioxanes, Dioxepines, And Dioxolanes Catalyzed By Bismuth(Iii) Triflate, Ram Mohan, Daniel Podgorski, Scott Krabbe, Long Le, Paul Sierszulski Dec 2009

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis: Synthesis Of Dioxanes, Dioxepines, And Dioxolanes Catalyzed By Bismuth(Iii) Triflate, Ram Mohan, Daniel Podgorski, Scott Krabbe, Long Le, Paul Sierszulski

Ram S. Mohan

A simple method for the synthesis of l,3-dioxolanes from carbonyl compounds has been developed using l,2-bis(trimethylsilyloxy) ethane in the presence of bismuth (III) triflate as a catalyst. The bismuth(III) triflate catalyzed synthesis of a range of dioxanes and dioxepines has also been developed. In these latter cases, the carbonyl compound is treated with a diol, and triethyl orthoformate is used as a water scavenger. All these methods avoid the use of a Dean-Stark trap.

Using Twitter Hash Tags To Demonstrate Basic Concepts From Network Analysis, Matt Bogard

Matt Bogard

Social Network Analysis focuses on finding patterns in interactions between people or entities. These patterns may be described in the form of a network. Network analysis in general has many applications including models of student integration and persistence, business to business supply chains, terrorist cells, or analysis of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. This presentation provides a reference for basic concepts from social network analysis with examples using tweets from Twitter.
