Data Quality Checks: Implementation With Popular Data Collection Crowdsourcing Platforms, James Down, Gregory Balkcom, Kristine Duncan, Ngan (An) Truong, Andrew Lewis
Symposium of Student Scholars
The utilization of online crowdsourcing platforms for data collection has increased over the past two decades in the field of public health due to the ease of use, the cost-saving benefits, the speed of the data collection process, and the accessibility of a potentially true representative population. Although these platforms offer many advantages to researchers, significant drawbacks exist, such as poor data quality, that threaten the reliability and validity of the study. Previous studies have examined data quality concerns, but differences in results arise due to variations in study designs, disciplinary contexts, and the platforms being investigated. Therefore, this study …
Expansionary Fiscal Contraction Hypothesis: An Evidence From Pakistan, Aisha Irum
Expansionary Fiscal Contraction Hypothesis: An Evidence From Pakistan, Aisha Irum
CBER Conference
The fiscal sector in Pakistan has been facing mule-layered challenges over several years. One of the reasons is the stubborn and unproductive nature of its public expenditure, and the other one is the lower tax revenues. This issue of hovering fiscal deficit is mostly dealt with the tools of fiscal contraction/austerity which can have a potential impact on the private sector of the economy. Thus, the question which has been addressed in this study is whether the Expansionary Fiscal Contraction (EFC) hypothesis holds in case of Pakistan. Fiscal contraction episodes have been identified using growth in the growth rates of …

Determining The Ideal Concentrations Of Ethanol And Propylene Glycol In Ethosomes For Transdermal Delivery Of Vitamin D3, Rebecca Conner
Determining The Ideal Concentrations Of Ethanol And Propylene Glycol In Ethosomes For Transdermal Delivery Of Vitamin D3, Rebecca Conner
Harrisburg University Research Symposium: Highlighting Research, Innovation, & Creativity
Vitamin D3 is an important chemical in the human body, however, many Americans have low levels of this vitamin. There are plenty of oral supplementations for Vitamin D3 deficiency, but those of older age and busy schedules may struggle to meet the minimum requirement. A recently developed ethosomal transmembrane delivery system (Touitou, 2000), similar to liposomes but also containing ethanol, allows users to apply a gel dermally and have the desired drug or active ingredient reach the bloodstream faster. However, there is considerable variation in the concentration of ethanol and permeation enhancers used. Using an affordable method to …

Would You Choose The Same Nationality If You Were Born Again?, Keito Kono, Logan Bowerman
Harrisburg University Research Symposium: Highlighting Research, Innovation, & Creativity
Nationality is an important element in the formation of identity, but this brings up a question; that is whether people are proud of their nationality. Thus, we decided to investigate how many people would prefer to have the same nationality if they were born again. This survey is important because it could provide an opportunity to recognize people's interest in other countries and their patriotism

The Relationship Between Pets Owned And Gender Amongst College Students, Eman Asghar, Bryce Camuso, Josh Feirick
Harrisburg University Research Symposium: Highlighting Research, Innovation, & Creativity
There is a gap between the number of men and women that own dogs. The Mintel Press Team states that "71% of men aged 18-44 own a dog compared to 60% of their female counterparts" (Mintel Press Team, 2016, para: 1). While this statistic includes people who are college-aged, it does not mention college students specifically. Thus, research into the relationship between pets owned and gender amongst college students is an important topic that warrants looking into.

The aim of the study is to examine the number of hours that Harrisburg University students spent on social media during their spare time. The purpose of the study is to raise awareness among students about the possible negative impacts of excessive social media usage on their academic performance, social interactions, and sleep duration. Additionally, the study explored the relationship between social media use and academic performance. To collect data, we surveyed one hundred and fifty students from Harrisburg University. The survey consisted of questions related to the number of hours spent on social media during spare time. The respondents …
Deep Q-Learning Framework For Quantitative Climate Change Adaptation Policy For Florida Road Network Due To Extreme Precipitation, Orhun Aydin
I-GUIDE Forum
Climate change-induced extreme weather and increasing population are increasing the pressure on the global aging road networks. Adaptation requires designing interventions and alterations to the road networks that consider future dynamics of flooding and increased traffic due to the growing population. This paper introduces a reinforcement learning approach to designing interventions for Florida's road network under future traffic and climate projections. Three climate models and a tide and surge model are used to create flooding and coastal inundation projections, respectively. The optimal sequence of decisions for adapting Florida's road network to minimize flooding-related disruptions is solved by using a graph-based …

Reducing Uncertainty In Sea-Level Rise Prediction: A Spatial-Variability-Aware Approach, Subhankar Ghosh, Shuai An, Arun Sharma, Jayant Gupta, Shashi Shekhar, Aneesh Subramanian
I-GUIDE Forum
Given multi-model ensemble climate projections, the goal is to accurately and reliably predict future sea-level rise while lowering the uncertainty. This problem is important because sea-level rise affects millions of people in coastal communities and beyond due to climate change's impacts on polar ice sheets and the ocean. This problem is challenging due to spatial variability and unknowns such as possible tipping points (e.g., collapse of Greenland or West Antarctic ice-shelf), climate feedback loops (e.g., clouds, permafrost thawing), future policy decisions, and human actions. Most existing climate modeling approaches use the same set of weights globally, during either regression or …

Payments Data In Gambling Research, Kasra Ghaharian, Mana Azizsoltani
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
A considerable body of gambling-related research has leveraged gamblers' behavioral tracking data to address a broad set of research questions. These data have typically comprised of gamblers' betting-related behaviors including, for example, the frequency and volume of betting. The analysis of gamblers' payment-related behavioral data is far less common, but provides a fruitful avenue gambling-related research.
In this presentation we discuss a selection of potential research opportunities that payments transaction data presents. We supplement this discussion with specific analyses that have been performed by our research group. We also discuss knowledge gaps and areas for future research.

Abstract:
A common difficulty when researching gambling topics is the availability of high-quality data sets for development and testing. Due to the high level of secrecy within the gambling industry, if data is obtained for research purposes it is often prohibitively obfuscated, incomplete, or aggregated. Although these data have allowed for advancement in academic work, it leaves both the researchers and readers left wondering about what would be possible if more detailed data sets were available. To mitigate the paucity of data available to researchers, we present a Markov chain-based statistical process for producing artificial event data for a simulated …

The Rocket: Analyzing Rtp (Return To Player), Payoff Distribution And Player Behavior In Crash Games, Mikhail M. Sher, Robert Haywood Scott Iii, Jonathan A. Daigle
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
Abstract
Rocket is a crash game developed by DraftKings, an American publicly traded online casino, sports betting and fantasy sports company. DraftKings Rocket is a game played with a rising rocket. Players must exit the rocket at any point before the rocket crashes. In that case they receive the payoff in accordance to the multiplier of their exit point. If the rocket crashes before the player bails, player’s payoff is 0 (and they lose their bet).
The game boasts an unprecedented 97% RTP (Return to Player). For comparison, Atlantic City casino slots typically have a 91-92% RTP, while Vegas casino …

Tardys Quantifiers: Extracting Temporal And Reversible Dynamical Symmetries, Nhat Vu Minh Nguyen, Arjendu K. Pattanayak, Andres Aragoneses
2023 Symposium
One of the great challenges in complex and chaotic dynamics is to reveal the details of its underlying determinism. This can be manifest in the form of temporal correlations or structured patterns in the dynamics of a measurable variable. These temporal dynamical structures are sometimes a consequence of hidden global symmetries. Here we identify the temporal (approximate) symmetries of a semiconductor laser with external optical feedback, based on which we define the Temporal And Reversible DYnamical Symmetry (TARDYS) quantifiers to evaluate the relevance of specific temporal correlations in a time series. We show that these symmetries are also present in …
Stake Size And Wagering In A Professional Betting Environment – When Data Affects Decision Making, Anthony Bedford, Tristan Barnett
Stake Size And Wagering In A Professional Betting Environment – When Data Affects Decision Making, Anthony Bedford, Tristan Barnett
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
In this work, we discuss the structure of a number of professional wagering organisations, and how they attempt to deal with the “Ender’s Game” effect – when knowledge of the true nature of the ‘war being wagered’ may have affected the process and choice of betting. We analyse the responses from professional wagering and betting organisations, whom operate predominately in Horseracing and sportsbetting, and they identify the importance of separation of decisions around choices to make and the stakes and size of wagers that are linked to the decisions. The proposed model, practically carried out by one company, is an …
