Pollen Fertility And Agronomic Performance Of Sorghum Hybrids With Different Male-Sterility-Inducing Cytoplasms, R. E. Secrist, R. E. Atkins Jan 1989

Pollen Fertility And Agronomic Performance Of Sorghum Hybrids With Different Male-Sterility-Inducing Cytoplasms, R. E. Secrist, R. E. Atkins

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Effects of three sources of male-sterility-inducing cytoplasm in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] were compared in crosses with 217 male parents. Hybrids of these parents and A2 Redbine 58', 'A3 Combine Kafir 60', and 'A4 Martin' female parents were evaluated for percentage stained pollen, seed set of bagged panicles, plant height, and days to midbloom. Additionally, hybrids of 12 of the inbreds crossed to each female parent were evaluated for grain yield and other agronomic traits in comparison with hybrids in A1 male-sterility-inducing cytoplasm.

Twenty-one inbreds restored pollen fertility to hybrids with A2 cytoplasm, 11 restored pollen fertility to …

Cytoplasmic Effect On Groat Protein Content In Lnterspecific Matings Of Avena Sativa L. And A. Sterilis L., A. Rezai, K. J. Frey Jan 1989

Cytoplasmic Effect On Groat Protein Content In Lnterspecific Matings Of Avena Sativa L. And A. Sterilis L., A. Rezai, K. J. Frey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Thirty sets of reciprocal isopopulations, each with 20 Fi-derived oat lines from the BC0, BC1, and BC2 of all possible matings among five Awia slerilis L. accessions and two A. saliva cultivars, were evaluated in a replicated field trial to determine whether groat protein content was influenced by cytoplasmic inheritance and to study associations between protein content and agronomic traits. A. slerili cytoplasm had no direct effect on groat protein content, but significant interactions between the cytoplasms and nuclear genes from A. saliva and A. s1erilis were detected. Thus, the potential may exist for improving …

Resources For Inventorying Plants In The Southeast Asian Tropics: Plans For The Future, J.S. Burley, P.F. Stevens, E.A. Wood Jan 1989

Resources For Inventorying Plants In The Southeast Asian Tropics: Plans For The Future, J.S. Burley, P.F. Stevens, E.A. Wood

Biology Department Faculty Works

We aimed to cover two issues in this workshop; the third arose during the course of the discussion: 1. The need for an increased rate of collecting in the Southeast Asian tropical area (‘Malesia’ for short) if taxonomic decisions in the ‘Flora Malesiana’ and other taxonomic projects are to be soundly based and, more generally, if there are to be materials adequate for the future needs of taxonomy. 2. The likelihood that any attempt to increase collecting, or even simply to continue collecting at the present rate, without paying adequate attention to the distribution, mounting, and preservation of the specimens …

Executive Summary

Biological diversity refers to the variety and variability among living organisms and the ecological complexes in which they occur. Diversity can be defined as the number of different items and their relative frequency. For biological diversity, these items are organized at many levels, ranging from complete ecosystems to the chemical structures that are the molecular basis of heredity. Thus, the term encompasses different ecosystems, species, genes, and their relative abundance (OTA, 1987).

There is an ongoing, unprecedented loss of the variety as well as absolute numbers of organisms-from the smallest microorganism to the largest and most spectacular of …

Virginia's Pelagic Recreational Fishery: Biological, Socioeconomic And Fishery Components, Eleanor A. Bochenek Jan 1989

Virginia's Pelagic Recreational Fishery: Biological, Socioeconomic And Fishery Components, Eleanor A. Bochenek

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Catch, effort, fleet size and boat owner expenditure data were collected on Virginia's recreational marlin/tuna fishery for the 1983-1985 seasons. Logbooks, dockside interviews and a telephone survey were evaluated to determine which method was the most efficient and effective for collecting and estimating catch and effort for Virginia's pelagic recreational fishery. In 1984, logbooks were used to collect catch and effort data and fishing effort was estimated using Bochenek's method. Very few fishermen returned their logbooks and as a result this data is probably less reliable than the data collected in other years. Due to the poor return of logbooks, …

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: S-Triazine-Resistant Plastids Chenopodium Album L., Jack Dekker, Ronald Burmester Jan 1989

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: S-Triazine-Resistant Plastids Chenopodium Album L., Jack Dekker, Ronald Burmester

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

S-triazine resistance in common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.) has been reported previously but not in Iowa. A study was conducted using a chlorophyll a fluorescence assay to confirm the presence of resistance in C. album populations in Iowa. Variable chlorophyll a fluorescence assays confirmed that mutations conferring resistance exist in five (5) geographically separated populations of C. album in Iowa: relatively greater fluorescence yields were measured in untreated resistant tissue compared with untreated susceptible plants, relatively greater fluorescence yield in treated compared with untreated susceptible leaf disks; and similar fluorescence yields of treated and untreated resistant tissue. This is the …

Ada Hayden: A Tribute, Duane Isely Jan 1989

Ada Hayden: A Tribute, Duane Isely

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Dr. Ada Hayden was a member of the Iowa State College of Botany faculty, 1920-1950. Her floristic studies of the lake region in northern Iowa are possibly the most authoritative for any part of the state. Hayden was curator of the Iowa State herbarium, 1934-1950, and contributed immeasurably to its development. This research facility has recently been named the Ada Hayden Herbarium. In the sense that L. H. Pammel was father of the Iowa State park system, her bequest is the state preserves. After some 25 years as a conservation activist, she published descriptions of 22 prairie areas in ten …

Ecology Of Iowa Drosophila Ii. Lowland Forest And Sand Prairie, Neil J. Jennings, Robert D. Seager

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The seasonal abundances of Drosophila species collected from a lowland forest community and from a sand prairie community in northeastern Iowa are compared. With some important exceptions, the patterns seen in the lowland forest community were similar to what had been observed in a previous collection (Jennings et al. 1985). Fewer species and many fewer individuals were collected from the sand prairie community, although in general the patterns seen were similar to those of the lowland forest community. Strong evidence of microhabitat differentiation was seen in both communities. In contrast to our previous study, none of the seasonal abundance patterns …

Geologic Evolution Of Trail Ridge Eolian Heavy-Mineral Sand And Underlying Peat, Northern Florida, Eric Force, Fredrick J. Rich Jan 1989

Geologic Evolution Of Trail Ridge Eolian Heavy-Mineral Sand And Underlying Peat, Northern Florida, Eric Force, Fredrick J. Rich

School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability Faculty Publications

The southern portion of Trail Ridge in Clay County, Fla., has been an important domestic source of altered ilmenite, zircon, and other minerals since 1949. The ridge as a physiographic feature extends in a north-south direction over 160 km and is 1 to 2 km wide. The ore is a fine- to medium-grained sand body that extends down from the crest of the ridge about 20 m. Average heavy-mineral content is about 4 percent. Over half of the ilmenite and zircon is contained in thin, dark laminae dipping 26° to 41 ° southwest; these laminae extend deep within the ore …
