Lupin Experiments - Eleven trials were sown during 1973 with the aim of further examining the response of lupins to inoculation on old clover land, new to lupins, and some on new land. Of the four time of planting trials two definitely showed superiority of earlier seeding (73BA5, 73E6). The two trials in the Southwest (73BR14 and 73MT7) gave highest yields with June sowing compared to May. Three trials (73BR14, 73E6 and 73BA5) appear to have a Variety x Time interaction for plant density, but no definite trend for either Uniharvest or Unicrop although later sowing reduced plant density. Seeding rates in excess of 82 kg/ha gave the highest yields in all trials. The rate of seeding experiments (73BA5 and 73MT7) show that the best crop density for yield (graph) lies between 8 …

A total of 53 pasture trials were topdressed. Of these, 37 trials were quantitatively assessed at different times during the growing season. Of the 15 wheat trials sown, only four trials gave useful results because of multiple drilling techniques used on most trials. Until the trial results have undergone comprehensive statistical analysis, no conclusions can be drawn. about the levels of response or "optimum" rates of superphosphate application at individual sites. The Dampier Archipelago is a group of islands off the north west coast of Australia (20 20! - 20 45'S, 116 Cast . 117°E), first discovered by William Dampier in 1699 and subsequently named after him by the Baudin expedition of 1801. This name has since been applied by some authors to include all islands from Roebourne to North West Cape, including both Barrow Island and the Monte Bello Islands, but it is more correctly applied to those islands within a 30 mile radius of the town of Dampier.

Experimental: There are 41 plots with 29 treatments. 12 treatments have 2 replications. Site: Very old land, whitegum and sheoak vegetation with greybrown sandy loam and some quartz grit. History: Superphosphate - 1/2bag for 40 years - 3,600 lbs (1633 kg). 600 lb (272 kg) in the last 4 years to 1967.

While most trial results have to be examined in the knowledge of low rainfall confounded with high weed competition, some useful and practical conclusions can be drawn. Soil and plant analysis (testing) has its supporters and its critics. Some of the differences are resolved if the distinction is made between the concept and the practice. Most people would agree with the concept of soil and plant analysis but the practice, or service offered, in any agricultural situation can be subject to valid criticism.

This article defines some of the principles involved and illustrates some of the problems, to provide a better understanding of the usefulness and the limitations of soil and plant analysis as a diagnostic aid in plant and animal nutrition.

The systematic investigations of the potential of the Ord area for irrigated farming began during the Second World War when the possibilities of damming the river were first examined, initial soil survey was carried out, and agricultural experiments started. The Kimberley Research Station was established on its present site in 1945. A year later the State and Commonwealth Governments agreed to finance and operate the Station jointly, with CSIRO and the Western Australian Department of Agriculture being responsible for research.

Mr. C. V. Malcolm, a research officer with the Soils Division, presented a paper entitled "Establishing Shrubs in Saline Environments" at a symposium on Useful Wildland Shrubs, Their Biology and Utilisation, at Utah State University, Logan, Utah.

The conclusion to Mr. Malcolm's review, set out below, summarises much of what is known about shrub establishment in saline areas.

Late spring frosts commonly reduce yields and affect the quality of grain in wheat crops, especially in the southern, eastern and north-eastern districts. The damage is usually localised on individual farms, but is sometimes widespread.

Barley, and oats to a lesser extent, are also affected. Average losses of wheat in Western Australia have been estimated at 3 to 5 per cent, per year, or about 2 million bushels on current production figures.
