Rates of Nitrogen on Wheat, Oats and Barley - Soil Test. In this, the third year of this programme, 44 sites were selected and soil sampled during February - March. Thirty seven of these trials consisted of four replications on wheat only and the other seven consisted of three replications on wheat, oats and barley. All reps were soil sampled separately. The use of the shrubland pastures of Western Australia began in 1861 when Mr. W. Burges of the Bowes Station near Northampton sent a flock of sheep along the Greenough River to graze the country where Yuin station is today. Following his example, a number of other enterprising men established grazing areas along the river courses of this harsh and often drought stricken and forbidding land. By 1925, virtually all of the pastoral land of value in the mulga zone west of the Gibson Desert and the Great Victoria Desert had been developed, and by 1934, over four million sheep …

Leaf epidermal transmittance of ultraviolet radiation (280-400 nm) was examined in several plant species to determine the capability of the epidermis to attenuate solar ultraviolet radiation. Epidermal samples were mechanically isolated and examined with a spectroradiometer/integrating sphere for transmittance. A survey of 25 species exposed to natural insolation was conducted. Although the species differed in life form, habitat type, and epidermal characteristics, epidermal transmittance was generally less than 10%. Ultraviolet radiation was attenuated 95 to 99% in more than half of the species. In 16 species, flavonoid and related pigments in the epidermis accounted for 20 to 57% of the …

Originally it was used in glasshouses and nurseries but it is now widely adapted to orchards, vegetable and other horticultural small crops and home gardens.

Although research is being actively pursued in the design and use of trickle irrigation it is now beyond the experimental stage as a technique and is an accepted and proven technique of watering many types of crop.

Saffron thistle is a primary noxious weed and is widespread throughout the drier parts of Western Australia. When growing in pasture its prickly growth habit discourages animals from grazing amongst it so that its presence results in the loss of feed. In crops it reduces yield and results in dockage when seed is found in harvested grain.

This research used the data on witness trees found in the surveyors' records of the General Land Office surveys of 1805-1815 as the basis for studying the primeval forests of unglaciated southern Illinois. Via computer, the random pairs and closest individual methods of plotless sampling were used to develop stand attributes tables, with soil association boundaries defining the limits of forest stands. A vegetation map was developed from these stands. Four major forest types were delineated: Upland Oak, nixed Hardwoods, Swamp Forest, and Floodplain Forest. This study examined the feeding responses of mule deer to a system of spring livestock grazing. The specific purposes were 1) to determine botanical composition of diets selected by mule deer on a winter range subjected to previous spring grazing by sheep compared to one with no sheep grazing and 2) to develop a basis for predicting selection of individual plants by deer, based on physical characteristics of the plants and the species and physical proximity of associated plants.

The number and area of Nature Reserves in Western Australia has grown rapidly in recent times. At 80 June 1975 there were 491 reserves with an area of 5 103 037 hectares. By 31 December 1975, with the inclusion of reserves for the Conservation of Flora in the definition of a Nature Reserve, there were 900 reserves totalling 5 317 965 ha. With the implementation of the Environmental Protection Authority's recommendations based on the Conservation Through Reserves Committee's Report on Systems 4, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 the Nature Reserve System will jump to 985 reserves with an area …
