Symbolic Quantum Circuit Simplification In Sympy, Matthew Curry Jun 2011

Symbolic Quantum Circuit Simplification In Sympy, Matthew Curry

Physics

In the field of quantum information science, one can design a series of quantum logic operations known as a circuit. Circuits are the basis for quantum computations in quantum computing. As circuits will most likely be designed from a logical standpoint, there could exist mathematical redundancies which will lead to a larger circuit than necessary. These redundancies are computationally expensive, and there is a need for them to be found and eliminated to simplify the circuit. We present our research on finding the rules for simplifying circuits and its implementation in SymPy.

A Modular Design For Nuclear Battery Technology, Randy Lao Jun 2011

A Modular Design For Nuclear Battery Technology, Randy Lao

Physics

This paper is an exploration of the physics and technology behind the development and on-going research of nuclear batteries. This includes the topics of isotope radiation suitable for such a device as well as the components necessary to utilize the energy of natural decay, such as solid and liquid semiconductors. Most importantly for public use, the battery requires a safe containment system while allowing convenient modularity. An efficiency and total output comparison will be made with standard button cell and dry cell batteries. Also, a proposal is made for the design of an enclosure to contain radioactive materials. The safe …

Measurement Of Spin Diffusion In Semi-Insulating Gaas, Christopher P. Weber, Craig A. Benko, Stanley C. Hiew May 2011

Measurement Of Spin Diffusion In Semi-Insulating Gaas, Christopher P. Weber, Craig A. Benko, Stanley C. Hiew

Physics

We use optical transient-grating spectroscopy to measure the spin diffusion of optically oriented electrons in bulk, semi-insulating GaAs(100). Trapping and recombination do not quickly deplete the photoexcited population. The spin diffusion coefficient of 88±12 cm2/s is roughly constant at temperatures from 15 K to 150 K, and the spin diffusion length is at least 450 nm. We show that it is possible to use spin diffusion to estimate the electron diffusion coefficient. Due to electron-electron interactions, the electron diffusion is 1.4 times larger than the spin diffusion.

The Seyfert 1 galaxy Zw 229-015 is among the brightest active galaxies being monitored by the Kepler mission. In order to determine the black hole mass in Zw 229-015 from Hβ reverberation mapping, we have carried out nightly observations with the Kast Spectrograph at the Lick 3 m telescope during the dark runs from 2010 June through December, obtaining 54 spectroscopic observations in total. We have also obtained nightly V-band imaging with the Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope at Lick Observatory and with the 0.9 m telescope at the Brigham Young University West Mountain Observatory over the same period. We …

The Implications Of A Robust Curriculum In Introductory Mechanics, Chance Hoellwarth, Matthew J. Moelter May 2011

The Implications Of A Robust Curriculum In Introductory Mechanics, Chance Hoellwarth, Matthew J. Moelter

Physics

We have developed a curriculum for introductory mechanics that emphasizes interactive engagement and conceptual understanding using the studio format. As previously reported, we have shown in three different quarters that the curriculum much improved the students’ conceptual understanding compared to the traditional course without significantly affecting the scores on a traditional final exam. Here we report the results for the entire three-year period during which the course was taught, 34 sections of the course were taught with 11 different instructors to over 1200 students. In each term, these sections had common exams, syllabus, and schedule. Student experiences were very similar …

Perturbed Breakup Of Gas Bubbles In Water: Memory, Gas Flow, And Coalescence, Nathan C. Keim May 2011

Perturbed Breakup Of Gas Bubbles In Water: Memory, Gas Flow, And Coalescence, Nathan C. Keim

Physics

The pinch-off of an air bubble from an underwater nozzle ends in a singularity with a remarkable sensitivity to a variety of perturbations. I report on experiments that break both the axial (i.e., vertical) and azimuthal symmetry of the singularity formation. The density of the inner gas influences the axial asymmetry of the neck near pinch-off. For denser gases, flow through the neck late in collapse changes the pinch-off dynamics. Gas density is also implicated in the formation of satellite bubbles. The azimuthal shape oscillations described by Schmidt et al. can be initiated by anisotropic boundary conditions in the liquid …

Guateca: A Carbon Footprint Viability Analysis, Kyle Reynolds May 2011

Guateca: A Carbon Footprint Viability Analysis, Kyle Reynolds

Physics

This report seeks to analyze the carbon footprint of the Guateca summer school program in 2011 run by Dr. Pete Schwartz. Through use of the listed carbon footprints of various substances in a Materials Engineering database, the CO2 emissions associated with various technologies and practices to be implemented by Guateca in the village of San Pablo, Guatemala are calculated and compared to estimated emissions of alternative standard practices that are currently in use or might be in the near future. The results are varied, and while many are heavily reliant on how well they can be implemented, most of …

Physics

We use time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy to investigate the unoccupied electronic density of states of warm dense copper that is produced isochorically through the absorption of an ultrafast optical pulse. The temperature of the superheated electron-hole plasma, which ranges from 4000 to 10 000 K, was determined by comparing the measured x-ray absorption spectrum with a simulation. The electronic structure of warm dense copper is adequately described with the high temperature electronic density of state calculated by the density functional theory. The dynamics of the electron temperature is consistent with a two-temperature model, while a temperature-dependent electron-phonon coupling parameter is …

Search For Cosmic Strings In The Cosmos Survey, Jodi L. Christiansen, E. Albin, T. Fletcher, J. Goldman, I. P.W. Teng, M. Foley, G. F. Smoot Apr 2011

Search For Cosmic Strings In The Cosmos Survey, Jodi L. Christiansen, E. Albin, T. Fletcher, J. Goldman, I. P.W. Teng, M. Foley, G. F. Smoot

Physics

We search the COSMOS survey for pairs of galaxies consistent with the gravitational lensing signature of a cosmic string. The COSMOS survey imaged 1.64 square degrees using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Our technique includes estimates of the efficiency for finding the lensed galaxy pair. We find no evidence for cosmic strings with a mass per unit length of Gμ/c2 < 3.0 × 10−7 out to redshifts greater than 0.6 and set 95% upper limits. This corresponds to a global 95% upper limit of Ωstrings < 0.0028.

Investigation Of Factors Affecting The Accumulation Of Vinyl Chloride In Polyvinyl Chloride Piping Used In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Ryan Walter, Po-Hsun Lin, Marc Edwards, Ruth E. Richardson Apr 2011

Investigation Of Factors Affecting The Accumulation Of Vinyl Chloride In Polyvinyl Chloride Piping Used In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Ryan Walter, Po-Hsun Lin, Marc Edwards, Ruth E. Richardson

Physics

Plastic piping made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and chlorinated PVC (CPVC), is being increasingly used for drinking water distribution lines. Given the formulation of the material from vinyl chloride (VC), there has been concern that the VC (a confirmed human carcinogen) can leach from the plastic piping into drinking water. PVC/CPVC pipe reactors in the laboratory and tap samples collected from consumers homes (n = 15) revealed vinyl chloride accumulation in the tens of ng/L range after a few days and hundreds of ng/L after two years. While these levels did not exceed the EPA’s maximum contaminant level (MCL) …

Physics

The feedback control of intra-bunch instabilities driven by electron-clouds or strong head-tail coupling (transverse mode coupled instabilities TMCI) requires bandwidth sufficient to sense the vertical position and apply correction fields to multiple sections of a nanosecond-scale bunch. These requirements impose challenges and limits in the design and implementation of the feedback control channel. This paper presents different models for the feedback subsystems: receiver, processing channel, amplifier and kicker, that take into account their frequency response and limits. These models are included in reduced mathematical models of the bunch dynamics and multi-particle simulation codes (WARP / C-MAD / HEADTAIL) to evaluate …

Physics

We present a search for β+/EC double beta decay of 120Te performed with the CUORICINO experiment, an array of TeO2 cryogenic bolometers. After collecting 0.0573 kg · y of 120Te, we see no evidence of a signal and therefore set the following limits on the half-life: T0v 1/2 > 1.9 · 1021 y at 90% C.L. for the 0v mode and T2v1/2 > 7.6 · 1019 y at 90% C.L. for the 2v mode. These results improve the existing limits by almost three orders of magnitude (four in the case of 0v mode).

Culture-Independent Characterization Of A Novel, Uncultivated Magnetotactic Member Of The Nitrospirae Phylum, Christopher T. Lefevre, Richard B. Frankel, Fernanda Abreu, Ulysses Lins, Dennis A. Bazylinski Feb 2011

Culture-Independent Characterization Of A Novel, Uncultivated Magnetotactic Member Of The Nitrospirae Phylum, Christopher T. Lefevre, Richard B. Frankel, Fernanda Abreu, Ulysses Lins, Dennis A. Bazylinski

Physics

A magnetotactic bacterium, designated strain LO-1, of the Nitrospirae phylum was detected and concentrated from a number of freshwater and slightly brackish aquatic environments in southern Nevada. The closest phylogenetic relative to LO-1 is Candidatus Magnetobacterium bavaricum based on a 91.2% identity in their 16S rRNA gene sequence. Chemical and cell profiles of a microcosm containing water and sediment show that cells of strain LO-1 are confined to the oxic–anoxic interface and the upper regions of the anaerobic zone which in this case, occurred in the sediment. This microorganism is relatively large, ovoid in morphology and usually biomineralizes three braid-like …

A Local Baseline Of The Black Hole Mass Scaling Relations For Active Galaxies. I. Methodology And Results Of Pilot Study, Vardha Nicola Bennert, Matthew W. Auger, Tommaso Treu, Jong-Hak Woo, Matthew A. Malkan

Physics

We present high-quality Keck/LRIS long-slit spectroscopy of a pilot sample of 25 local active galaxies selected from the SDSS (0.02 ≤z ≤ 0.1; M BH>107 M ) to study the relations between black hole mass (M BH) and host-galaxy properties. We determine stellar kinematics of the host galaxy, deriving stellar-velocity dispersion profiles and rotation curves from three spectral regions (including CaH&K, MgIb triplet, and Ca II triplet). In addition, we perform surface photometry on SDSS images, using a newly developed code for joint multi-band analysis. BH masses are estimated from the width of the …

Polarization-Dependent Atomic Dipole Traps Behind A Circular Aperture For Neutral-Atom Quantum Computing, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Bert D. Copsey Jan 2011

Polarization-Dependent Atomic Dipole Traps Behind A Circular Aperture For Neutral-Atom Quantum Computing, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Bert D. Copsey

Physics

The neutral-atom quantum computing community has successfully implemented almost all necessary steps for constructing a neutral-atom quantum computer. We present computational results of a study aimed at solving the remaining problem of creating a quantum memory with individually addressable sites for quantum computing. The basis of this quantum memory is the diffraction pattern formed by laser light incident on a circular aperture. Very close to the aperture, the diffraction pattern has localized bright and dark spots that can serve as red-detuned or blue-detuned atomic dipole traps. These traps are suitable for quantum computing even for moderate laser powers. In particular, …

The BL Lacertae object 3C 66A was detected in a flaring state by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and VERITAS in 2008 October. In addition to these gamma-ray observations, F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, PAIRITEL, MDM, ATOM, Swift, and Chandra provided radio to X-ray coverage. The available light curves show variability and, in particular, correlated flares are observed in the optical and Fermi-LAT gamma-ray band. The resulting spectral energy distribution can be well fitted using standard leptonic models with and without an external radiation field for inverse Compton scattering. It is found, however, that only the model with an external …

Python Modeling Of Heat Flow In A Thermal Storage Device, Tim Hider Jan 2011

Python Modeling Of Heat Flow In A Thermal Storage Device, Tim Hider

Physics

A parabolic dish that concentrates sunlight into a thermal storage device may comprise an inexpensive, environmentally benign, clean cooking technology appropriate for developing countries. A Scheffler Solar reflector was constructed and a thermal storage device built to eventually be coupled with the Scheffler. We tested the heat flow in the thermal storage device with an electric heater, and wrote Python code that solves the heat diffusion in 1D and 2D in order to model heat flow in the thermal storage device.
