Inner Continental Shelf Benthic Boundary Layer Dynamics And Suspended Sediment Transport, Sung Chan Kim
Inner Continental Shelf Benthic Boundary Layer Dynamics And Suspended Sediment Transport, Sung Chan Kim
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
An experiment conducted over the shoreface at Duck, North Carolina in 1985 embraced both fair-weather low energy and storm-related high energy conditions. to differentiate the diffusion and advection processes of suspended sediments under the high energy conditions from those under the low energy conditions, numerical modeling and the analysis of field data are exercised. A simple two-layer eddy viscosity wave-current combined boundary layer model is developed. The modeled characteristics of the boundary layer are incorporated with a diffusion equation to give suspended sediment concentration profiles. A velocity scale related to factors other than turbulent diffusion is formulated, representing the diffusion …
Summer Stormflow Generation In A Small Precambrian Shield Basin, Larry C. Pezzuto
Summer Stormflow Generation In A Small Precambrian Shield Basin, Larry C. Pezzuto
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The environmental isotope oxygen-18 and natural water chemistry were used to identify both the percent individual source component and mechanisms responsible for generating summer surface storm runoff in a small Precambrian Shield catchment. In addition, variations in radon gas (Rn-222) concentration in both surface and groundwaters were monitored in order to gain additional information not obtainable through use of the above stated tracers. Results indicate that the percent component contribution and the mechanism(s) responsible for stormflow generation within the study basin are largely dependent upon antecedent basin conditions and physical storm characteristics. Generally speaking, shortly after initiation of precipitation under …
Comparative Community Structure Of Surf-Zone Fishes In The Chesapeake Bight And Southern Brazil, Cassiano Monteiro-Neto
Comparative Community Structure Of Surf-Zone Fishes In The Chesapeake Bight And Southern Brazil, Cassiano Monteiro-Neto
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The structure of surf-zone fish communities at Cassino (western South Atlantic, WSA) and the Chesapeake Bight (western North Atlantic, WNA) is described using historical beach seine data, to examine similarities between geographically isolated fish communities. Numerical classification, ANCOVA, Shanon-Wiener diversity and its components, and species rarefaction are used to describe fish community structure: (a) within habitat (Cassino); (b) within region (Chesapeake Bight); (c) within the western Atlantic (comparison between Cassino and the Chesapeake Bight). The surf-zone fish community at Cassino had a low diversity and was dominated by a few species. Seasonal periods identified by cluster analysis correlated well with …

Ensayara Jumane, A New Species From Belize, Caribbean Sea (Amphipoda, Lysianassidae), J. L. Barnard, James Darwin Thomas
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Ensayara jumane is described from Belize. It differs from the west Mexican Ensayara ramonella J. L. Barnard (1964) in the excavate posteroventral margins of article 2 on pereopods 5-7, and the sparse (9 versus 25) setae on articles 5-6 of gnathopod I. A new diagnosis for Ensayara, a key to species, list of species, references to original descriptions and geographic codes for each species are provided. This is the first record of the genus from the Caribbean Sea.

Gitana Dominica, A New Species From The Caribbean Sea (Amphipoda: Amphilochidae), James Darwin Thomas, J. L. Barnard
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The new species Gitana dominica is described from Dominica in the Lesser Antilles; it is the first record of the genus from the western Atlantic Ocean. The new species differs from its closest relative, Gitana calitemplado, from California, in the shorter and posteroventrally excavate coxa 1. Gitana is reviewed.

The first stage of a new midlatitude facility at the Hardware Ranch Observatory near Bear Lake (41.93°N, 111.42°W, 1970 M elevation), for studies of the aeronomy of the middle and upper atmosphere, was completed during early September 1989. An Imaging Fabry‐Perot interferometer (IFPI) (Rees et al., 1982; Rees et al., 1990), was commissioned with a special Imaging Photon Detector (IPD) (McWhirter et al., 1982), equipped with a Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) photocathode. Wind and temperature structure can be deduced from observations of the Doppler shift and Doppler broadening of airglow and auroral emissions from the mesosphere and thermosphere. The near infra‐red …
Middle Eocene Foraminifera From The Piney Point Formation Of The Virginia And Maryland Coastal Plain, Megan S. Jones
Middle Eocene Foraminifera From The Piney Point Formation Of The Virginia And Maryland Coastal Plain, Megan S. Jones
OES Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the foraminiferal fauna, both benthic and planktonic, of the outcropping (45 samples) and subsurface (31 samples) middle Eocene Piney Point Formation in Virginia and Maryland. The primary objective of this study is to further refine the depositional history of the Salisbury Embayment which is represented by the middle Eocene Piney Point Formation. Ninety-six species of benthic and planktonic foraminifera were identified in this study. Of these, several are characteristic of the middle Eocene: Asterigerina texana, Hanzawaia danvillensis, Ceratobulimina exima, Cibicides westi, Chiloguembelitria columbiana, C. stavensis, Testacarinata inconspicua and Pseudohastigerina wilcoxensislmicra. While these were relatively abundant, diagnostic middle …
The Effects Of Variable Parameters On The Behavior Of Initial Wind Waves, Glen Harvey Wheless
The Effects Of Variable Parameters On The Behavior Of Initial Wind Waves, Glen Harvey Wheless
OES Theses and Dissertations
The generation mechanism of short wind waves is generally thought to be a viscous instability at the air-sea interface. The short, regular waves arising from a sudden wind on a still water surface have a dispersion relation which is characteristic of gravity-capillary waves. The effects of variable surface tension, viscosity and shear flow parameters on the behavior of these waves were studied.
A numerical hydrodynamic stability analysis of a coupled laminar shear flow was accomplished by integrating a transformed version of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation, subject to the boundary conditions at a two-fluid interface. Unbounded growth problems usually encountered in a …

Cataract Occurrence In Micropogonia Furnieri (Desmarest, 1822) In The Area Between Capes Frio And Torres (23° S And 29° S), Brazil : Investigation Of Causes And Electrophoretic Studies Of Total Proteins Of The Eye Lenses, Anna Emila A. De M. Vazzoler, Van Ngan Phan
Reports
The frequency and distribution of these specimens were analysed and the electrophoretic patterns of soluble eye-lens proteins were determined. This cataract is not of parasitic origin and was rare in specimens from the coastal area. In the lagunar region it occurs mainly in specimens of the River Baguacu from April to November.
An Economic Model For Evaluating Strategies On The South Coast Of W.A. Which Reduce Wind Erosion : Documentation, A D. Bathgate
An Economic Model For Evaluating Strategies On The South Coast Of W.A. Which Reduce Wind Erosion : Documentation, A D. Bathgate
Resource management technical reports
The sandplain region on the south coast has predominately sandy soils which are subject to erosive winds when ground cover is likely to be scarce. This can often result in production losses of crop and pasture. There is concern that wind erosion will lead to the depletion of the soil resource in the long term. The model is multi-period linear programming with a planning horizon of 10 years. Effects of wind erosion on production can be imposed on the model for the first five years after the erosion event.
