Public water supply (PWS) wells currently contain dissolved uranium concentrations above the federally mandated maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 30 ppb (parts per billion) and dissolved arsenic concentrations above the 10 ppb MCL. Both uranium and arsenic are known to cause various forms of cancer in humans. Variations in total uranium concentrations in PWS wells in Nebraska indicate a relationship to the duration and rate of pumping in specific wells. Although total arsenic concentrations show some variability over time in specific wells, the relationship to pumping is not as clear. Previous studies show that iron and sulfur bacteria present in …

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has selected the Saugatuck, Salmon, Eight Mile, Mount Hope / Natchaug, and Hollenbeck River watersheds for priority protection in Connecticut. A number of threats, including altered hydrology, have been identified in these watersheds. This project has been designed to better understand that threat and provide some context for future protection or restoration of the hydrology within those watersheds. The definition of altered hydrology is problematic, as the time at which the watersheds are considered unaltered is ambiguous and historic data is often unavailable. This discussion paper has been prepared to assist in the assessment of the possible impact of the translocation of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), into and within Western Australia, for the purposes of recreational stock enhancement in public waters, non-commercial aquaculture on private properties and commercial aquaculture. In assessing the translocation of any aquatic species, economic and social benefits must be balanced with biological and environmental risks.

Hydrologic Events And Water Quality In The Pigeon River, Ottawa County, Michigan, Neil W. Macdonald, Richard R. Rediske, Jonathan E. Van Denend

The Pigeon River drains a 16,765-ha agricultural watershed in western Ottawa County, Michigan and discharges into south-central Lake Michigan. Extensive areas of wetlands in the upper watershed were drained in the 1920s, causing significantly altered hydrology characteristics by flashy discharges during storms and periods of snowmelt. We studied stream chemistry and hydrology for a four-year period between September, 1996, and October, 2000, to determine water quality status, to estimate annual nutrient exports, and to evaluate the effects of different seasonal flow types. Our paper discusses the proposed methodology for the implementation of a monitoring tool for surface water run-off in (semi-)arid areas. This tool is being developed as part of a two year multi-disciplinary shared cost project supported by the European Union AVICENNE initiative. The tool aims at supporting decision making and planning in water run-off management for sustainable development of water resources for human settlement and regeneration of desertification-prone areas in the arid climate zone.
