Yellagonga Wetlands: A Study Of The Water Chemistry And Aquatic Fauna, Adrianne Kinnear, Patrick Garnett, Hugo Bekle, K. Upton
Research outputs pre 2011
Wetlands worldwide are continually threatened by urbanisation and Western Australia is no exception. Since European settlement in 1829, it has been estimated that at least 75% of the wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain have disappeared (Halse, 1988). The remaining 25% continue to be threatened by eutrophication and pollution, changes in hydrology and water level patterns, clearing of riparian vegetation, aesthetic disruption and weed invasion (CALM, 1980; Davis and Rolls, 1987; Wrigley et al., 1991; Balla and Davis, 1995). These degradation components are interrelated and largely the consequence of the extensive removal of surrounding vegetation...

Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata) Restoration In Altered Sage Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) Habitat Of The Yakima Training Center In Central Washington, Margaret Ann Pounds
Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata) Restoration In Altered Sage Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) Habitat Of The Yakima Training Center In Central Washington, Margaret Ann Pounds
All Master's Theses
The restoration of sagebrush at the Yakima Training Center was studied because it was determined that military training was altering the condition of sage grouse habitat, potentially having a negative impact on the sage grouse population of the installation. The management of sage grouse and its habitat on YTC are a priority for the U.S. Army. The objectives of this study were to identify the issues relevant to sage grouse and the restoration of its habitat on the training facility, to investigate sagebrush restoration techniques, and to make management recommendations based upon this study. Results of this study indicate that …

1997 Rapid Ecological Assessment Northern Great Plains Steppe Ecoregion: Western And Central South Dakota, Northwestern Nebraska, Eastern Wyoming, A Final Report, Terri Hildebrand
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
In an effort to gain a more complete understanding of existing vegetative communities of the Northern Great Plains Steppe Ecoregion, rapid ecological assessment was undertaken throughout the ecoregion during the field season of 1997. Field office personnel of The Nature Conservancy and private contractors evaluated previously delineated regions in accordance with methodology determined in May of 1997. The following document presents results of the rapid ecological assessments performed by Hildebrand Contracting. The purpose of this document is to provide The Nature Conservancy with information to help determine the vegetative features of regions sampled. The specific areas and boundaries for evaluation …

Sem Analysis Of Quartz Sand Grain Surface Textures Indicates Alluvial/Colluvial Origin Of The Quaternary "Glacial" Boulder Clays At Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), East-Central China, P. E. Helland, Pei-Hua Huang, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
Sem Analysis Of Quartz Sand Grain Surface Textures Indicates Alluvial/Colluvial Origin Of The Quaternary "Glacial" Boulder Clays At Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), East-Central China, P. E. Helland, Pei-Hua Huang, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Geomorphic features and Pleistocene deposits on Huangshan have been attributed to glaciation. Recent reassessment questions this interpretation. As part of the reassessment, quartz sand grains from deposits identified as glacial boulder clays (till composed of boulders in a clay or silt matrix) were analyzed by scanning electron microscope for evidence of their sedimentary history. Surface textures found on the boulder-clay grains were compared with those on grains with known sedimentary histories including glacial, grus, colluvial, and alluvial grains. The analysis shows that the grains lack typical glacial textures. The surface textures present indicate a complex history. Non-uniformly weathered grain surfaces …

Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program Annual Report 1996, Cm Bain Iii, John A. Lucy
Reports
The Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program (VGFfP), a cooperative project of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), enjoyed its second full year of operation in 1996. Participation in the project, which is funded with revenues generated by Virginia's saltwater recreational fishing license, nearly doubled with 127 anglers volunteering as taggers compared to 64 in 1995.
Scope Of Justice, Delegitimisation, Sentience And Ecosystemic Integrity As Predictors Of Protection, Rob Gulley
Scope Of Justice, Delegitimisation, Sentience And Ecosystemic Integrity As Predictors Of Protection, Rob Gulley
Theses : Honours
It is argued that the continuing environmental destruction results from an instrumental valuation of the non-human world. Fox's (1995) alternative intrinsic value approach to environmental protection is introduced. Two aspects of Fox's descriptive model may represent fundamental motives, or ethical bases, for behaviour. They are sentience -the quality of being capable of experiencing pain, and ecosystemic-integrity -the quality of contributing to the self-regenerating capacity of an ecosystem. The inconsistency between the presumed ethical bases for behaviour, and actual behaviour is noted. It is suggested that delegitimisation- the discounting of some desirable quality in a competitor during conflict, and the scope …
Small Mammals Of Point Pelee National Park: Protecting Biodiversity In Small Reserves (Ontario), Julie Ann Spicer
Small Mammals Of Point Pelee National Park: Protecting Biodiversity In Small Reserves (Ontario), Julie Ann Spicer
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Habitat destruction, fragmentation and degradation have been widespread throughout southern Ontario with devastating effects on wetlands. Small reserves are all that in this highly agricultural/urban landscape to protect the biodiversity of Great Lakes Marsh and Carolinian Forest ecosystems. Small reserves are vulnerable to species loss through a host of problems related to size and as a result, the value of small reserves to conservation strategies has often been questioned. Indicator species can be used as a means of studying the conditions of complex ecosystems. In this research, small mammals were sampled in the wetlands of Point Pelee National Park as …
Effectiveness Of The Protected Area Network In Biodiversity Conservation: A Case-Study Of Meghalaya State, M. Latif Khan, Shaily Menon, Kamaljit Bawa
Effectiveness Of The Protected Area Network In Biodiversity Conservation: A Case-Study Of Meghalaya State, M. Latif Khan, Shaily Menon, Kamaljit Bawa
Shaily Menon
The North-Eastern region of India is significant for biodiversity conservation because of its floristic richness and high levels of endemism. Deforestation levels are high in the region due to anthropogenic pressures. We accessed various literature sources to create a database for Meghalaya state containing information on plant species, habit, altitudinal distribution, endemism, and endangered status. Information on the existing protected area network (type, extent, and altitudinal representation) was added to the database. The database was used to assess the effectiveness of the existing protected area network in conserving the floristic biodiversity of the state. Of a total of 3331 plant …

Biodiversity Monitoring: The Missing Ingredient, Kamaljit Bawa, Shaily Menon

With mounting losses in biological diversity, inventorying and monitoring of biodiversity to assess the magnitude and rate of losses are emerging as dominant themes in conservation biology. Inventorying has been defined as the surveying, sorting, cataloging, quantifying and mapping of entities ranging from genes to landscapes1 and monitoring has been defined as the surveillance of the compliance with or deviation from a predetermined standard2. Renner and Ricklefs3 argued that rushed inventories will compromise scientific rigor and have little influence on decision making. More recently, Stork et al.4 argued that losses in biological diversity are so severe that inventorying and monitoring …
