Objectives: A pilot study was undertaken in July 1988 to: 1. Provide an estimate of the location and size of offshore sand resources suitable for beach nourishment. 2. Perform beach surveys and associated sampling for determining beach equilibrium configurations. 3. Provide a preliminary assessment of sites suitable for beach enhancement. 4. Provide a preliminary assessment of areas having extraordinary environmental sensitivity. Emphasis was given.to Oranje Baai and adjoining regions.

Work is underway to clarify the population status of Virginia's biota that have been considered rare, endangered, or of an unknown population status by earlier scientists (Porter, 1979). The purpose of the current study was to investigate the population status and areal distribution of five of these plant species found on the tidal rivers of the Coasta1 Plain in Virginia. Internal anchor tags with external tubes were used to tag 1,986 striped bass in the James River in the Spring of 1987. The total number tagged was adjusted (at this time) to 823 because of observed and suspected tagging mortality. The available stock of striped bass in the Spring contained both young resident fish and mature nonresident fish which left the area of capture after spawning, presumably to migrate north in coastal waters. The exodus of the mature fish after spawning and the absence of a commercial fishery resulted in only 42 tag returns as of Spring 1988. This proportion …

This study was designed as a pilot study with the intent of identifying important considerations for the design and conduct of an investigation of forested buffer strip performance in Virginia's coastal plain. The approach 3 4' I was to conduct a small preliminary study on a single site using the opportunity to investigate a number of potential sampling methods.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the York River, Virginia. The river is formed by the confluence of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey rivers at West Point, Virginia. It is tidal over its entire length and flows to the western shore of Chesapeake Bay.

The Vegetative Erosion Control (VEC) project is a four-year study with coordinated efforts by the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Commmission (VS&WCC) through their Shoreline Erosion Advisory Service (SEAS), the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). Initial funding was appropriated in 1980 following the recommendation of the Coastal Erosion Abatement Commission and contracted out to the SCS and VIMS by the VS&WCC, the lead agency. (...)

·1ow cost erosion control structures were installed at ten shoreline sites located in the lower Chesapeake Bay and on the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers to further test the applicability of the perched beach concept under diverse littoral environments. The perched beach is achieved via installation of a low sill parallel to the shoreline. The objective of the sill is to provide a partial barrier behind which an elevated (perched) beach is accreted. During 1974 the Virginia Institute of Marine Science conducted a series of oceanographic, water quality and modeling studies for the outfall from the proposed Nansemond Wastewater Treatment Plant (VIMS, 1975). One of these studies included dye releases to determine the dispersion and transport of material discharged to Hampton Roads near Pig Point. These dye releases were made from the munitions loading piers known as "Foxtrot".
The proposed outfall, as given in the Facilities Plan is located roughly one kilometer to the east-south-east of Foxtrot. Tidal circulation in Hampton Roads is quite complex and there was concern that the distribution patterns …

Tangier Island, in Accomack County, Virginia, is the southernmost of a series of islands separating Chesapeake Bay from Tangier and Pocomoke Sounds (Figure 1) . With the exception of three sand ridges, which are the populated areas, the island is low lying marsh and tidal flat deposits with elevations generally below 6 feet (MLW datum).

Plume entrainment studies at Vepco Nuclear Power Plant located near Surry, Virginia were initiated in August, 1975 by the Ichthyology department of Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The program was undertaken to define the amount and kinds of fish eggs and larvae that are. present in the Cobham Bay area of the James River and become entrained by the heated effluent.
